Jan,

That's a lot of ammo lockers. Your Hood is shaping up very nicely. Looking forward to the next post.

Tim, Michael, Mark, Si and Russ,

thank you so much for your kind comments and encouragement, that is very much appreciated! And again, thank you all for your patience and still sticking around with me on my HMS Hood build!

I hope to have another update in a little more than a week from now - sorry, no bench time this weekend, busy and away...real life stealing modeling time again...

Thank you again and cheers,

Jan

Dear all,

another two weeks gone, but finally I've to show a few more things...

Four ladders added down from the Quraterdeck

A little tricky to get them into correct position on the deck below, but - even if concealed most of the time, I like to know that they are there.

And added some equipment and the last HACS director to the after platform.

So here's some motivation picture for me - that's where I'm at, all prior steps completed. -only that there are a myriad of steps that are not in the kit's instructions, but even on the aftermarket instructions, I could cross out quite a few things. So there should be light at the end of the tunnel...

Cheers,
Jan

Excellent progress Jan,

The after superstructure has nice busy look about it.

It is always nice when you get the feeling that the end is in site, even if you need binoculars too see it.

Keep up the good work mate.

cheers

great update Jan!

those little details like ladders between decks add interest. Always great to look over models with pen lights and discover these hidden gems!

Keep up the good work mate!

Gentlemen,

thank you so much!!!

Well, I've another small break ahead of me, I hope next update should be in two weeks. However, yes - commissioning is not near yet, but I can see it coming up on the horizon!!

Mark - thank you very much!!

So here's the next short update. A part of the ship that I've been postponing for a while, and it proves challenging....

The after starfish/mast arrangement with rig.

The starfish from Eduard, doable.

The railing however is not the right size, in the instructions it is longer with two more stanchions. But I could build it as a square vs. the more complex shape, that should do the job.

Then Eduard provides a very complex approach to the jig attachment...

...six micro-parts transforming into this:

Looks quite nice, but almost undoable. And the biggest problem for me is to bent the attachment plate into a circle part of 2,5mm diameter, to snuggle around the mast. There are tool to do that, however I don't have them in my inventory...

Looking at the Lion Roar kit, they have a much simpler solution, which is, hands down, not as nice and detailed as the Eduard one, but should do the job. And is doable.

So here's what I have, should look all right after some touch ups and with paint on.

Dry fitting on the ship:

That's it for today, thanks as always for looking in and cheers,

Jan

Hi Jan!

Well you know you're getting close to catching the glacier when masts start going up!

Looks great, mate! I'm becoming more and more a fan of Eduard's efforts for ship PE. Although as you noted, sometimes its a little over done

Very Nice job on the mast Jan,

The Derrick rigging looks complex enough to easily pass muster.

You are getting there mate.

Cheers

Looking good, Jan. You must be getting excited - that derrick arrangement is looking awesome! Eduard seems to have got it just right.

Tim, Si and Russ,

once more thank you for staying tuned and for your kind comments!!

Well, I'm still fighting the glacier race, and I have to admit that I've lost for 2018 - even so 12 months earlier I was more than convinced I would be well underway in my next project by now. Well, things developed rather differently this year, and more than once I was about to loose my spirit. But oddly, this was never about the kit or the build, but about real life issues...

I was hoping to finish before Christmas only some weeks ago, but once more real life turned out to have some surprises...anyway. Here we are, and the main mast is standing!

Here's some pictures.

Comparing Eduard and Lion Roar sets, and what references I have, I decided for the upper part of the main mast the Lion Roar would be better.

The parts actually went together better than I had feared at first.

I then tried aa a little unconventional approach, painting the black and grey with the airy stick without any masking, only trying to get advantage of different angles of spraying it (and of course touch ups have to follow). Here's how it looks prior to any touch ups.

And here with touch ups from the hairy stick, entirely without masking. That did the job better than breaking those fragile parts by trying to apply any kind of masking.

And finally, that's how HMS Hood looks when the shipyard workers start their Christmas leave...

With that I wish you and your families a merry Christmas, happy holidays and a happy New Year!! May there be something modeling related under your trees...

All the best, thanks for looking and commenting and mots of all, your patience with my glacier speed!!!

Cheers,
Jan

Hi Jan!

Well your Hood's certainly looking very fine!

Your technique with the airbrush has certainly paid off as the RN are known for their fine masts that are definitely difficult to paint

Good on you for sticking with too mate! Model ship building can be a tricky hobby to stick with for sure, but we're all in the same, ahem, boat

Merry Christmas to you and your family and all the best wishes for the new year!

Dear all,

again it's about a month since my last update....

First of all, let me wish you all a happy 2019 and all the best for you, your families and your shipyards!
And thank you for still watching and commenting!

I do have another update, actually the pictures are over a week old, I simply didn't find the time for posting. And I'll catch up with all your fine builds soon, as well!

So here's the latest on my HMS Hood:

Built those little secondary cranes next to the funnel, with all the Eduard stuff.

And shipped:

And the unfortunate UP Launchers, this time I used the Lion Roar PE, that looked better than the Eduard choice.

Sprayed mid-grey

And shipped:

Slowly but constantly getting there...

Thanks for looking as always, and (hopefully) more soon!

Cheers,
Jan

Jan,

Nice to see you back. Nice work on those canes and UP launchers. Churchill really like the idea of those UP launchers but were such a failure that they were removed from all British ship not long after the Hood was sunk.

Great work Jan,

The cranes and the UP mounts look very good indeed. The shelter deck is starting to look very busy.

Dear all,

here is my update from last weekend.

By now I think I can really see some light...first boats going on, I decided to install the two open boats that hang in their davids.

Davids:

and shipped:

And the first boats, these ones (as all boats for my HMS Hood) from Shapeways. Some oars added as well.

And finally - the probably most imported part of the ship...

Those are the Lion Roar resin turrets, some work required to clean them, but fairly easy to do.

The rangefinders were more complicated, in fact, I think the resin cast is actually lacking detail and crispness as compared to the kit's plastic...

So I decided to use the kit's rangefinders with the resin turrets.

Dry fitting of the barrels:

And dry fitting on the ship, nothing glued together or in place yet. And of course, there's more PE to come - ladders, details to the rangefinders etc...

Looks pretty cool already!!

So much for now, I'm not sure wether I will find bench time the next weekend, we will see...

As always, thanks for looking in and cheers,

Jan
