the promised update!

Small stuff prepared



next breakwaters added





and those small cranes forward modified. There was a nice etch part for them in the Eduard set.





Fire control to for the armored bridge





and installed along with some railing.







A bunch of tiny cranes or davids to be folded from PE (Eduard):



With some help of a bending tool











There were actually eight of them on the Ed set, I bent them all in shape even though I have not figured out yet where all of them go. Two were indicated for the aft searchlight platform. Does this make sense? But it looks busy...

Much more complicated were the aft .50 cal platforms, they need a ruling instead of that closed tub from the base kit. The PE provided by Eduard is to sturdy, but a combination from the Eduarde base plate, ammo boxes and the softer Lion Roar railing looks quite ok.







All in place:





More railing - this one actually proofed a little bit challenging - you can see the mixture of gold and grey color. Installing those parts, mirrored port and starboard, I found that port side was just fine, while on starboard there was a significant gap, about 1mm. Apparently, the lower bridge is not exactly centered - what, on reflection, is pretty likely, remembering all the fitting I had to do to get those metal parts aligned. With the naked eye, it looks just fine, but the railing proofed - it is slightly off center. Now rectifying that is entirely out of question, nor only because of the immense work and danger to the structure, just because I remember how glad I was that I eventually had a position where the parts would fit. So modifying the railing. I did find railing parts with larger distance between the stanchions, which is imported: having a different number or lineup of stanchions port and starboard would make the mistake all to obvious. Having the same lineup, but one part slightly larger will hopefully conceal it a bit...



Finally one particular nuisance, the top fire control. Consisting of two parts, I seriously was unsure whether I had the right parts - but I had. But what a poor fit. Here some pictures after some serious cutting and sanding.







Here with some surfacer, it will need some more...





Some rounds of filling and sanding, and we shall see....

So much for now - there is progress, but I seriously under estimated the amount of small stuff that is almost everywhere. But those parts bring the ship to life, HMS Hood had REALLY busy upper decks...

Dear all,

I'm not going to elaborate on why it took me well over a month for my next update. Several reasons, the last two weeks pretty enjoyable though - spent some holidays in England and Scotland.

I'll be commenting on all your great builds later, the posted link the the HMS Hood movie was a nice motivation, though. Almost looks like they are pulling her out of Greenock for the very first time. Just how high she is riding!!

But here's something on my HMS Hood.

More small stuff, and starting fire control and top of foremast. And rectified the wrong painted foremast, it was black from about the hight of the funnel caps on upwards.

Just some pictures:

















And started with the forward starfish, I chose the Eduard version. Eduards instructions are basically non existing - they show a drawing of the completed piece and the parts you'll need. However, with some logic it's rather straight forward. Here's a step by step as I did it.

The parts





Some trial and error, mainly looking at the indicated bends, length of the parts and the engravings on the platform. Glueing each individual part to achieve sturdiness in the whole thing.















I'm pretty happy with the result - certainly an improvement over the kit's plastic part!

thank you very much for your kind comments! I managed to get a little bench time today, here the results.

Some parts shipped on board, and more work on sub assemblies. Got the air and the hairy sticks back to work...









Dry fitting the Trumpi parts for the forward lookout / artillery control. Arrrgh...



Eliminating the plastic "windows"



and preparations to install the Eduard PE, painting the background black and of course surfacer...





Starfish platform installed - it is slowly getting the characteristic an unique look

Welcome back from your holidays! Sounds like you had a great time! Hopefully the was cold and the weather warm!

Great to see you back at the bench and the Mighty 'ood progressing! That PE starfish looks good, but as always the Trumpy bug continues to bight, hey?

I Like that starfish platform! Certainly a big improvement over the kit piece which is what make us do it of course. It always seems worth it in the end.
Sloppy instructions seem to be par for the course for etch suppliers, something I am struggling with at the moment from Infini.

I'm feeling bad by now since I still have not commented on all your great builds out there on MSW, but somehow, after struggling for a while, I feel the urge to use my spare time at the work bench. This is the last day of my leave, back to work tomorrow, and that will cut down my bench time significantly. However, I'll make good what I missed out on MSW during the week....

So here is what I managed on my HMS Hood. Mainly working on the spotting top.



Starfish with yardarms and additional railings fitted.





Adding some more depth to the antenna arrays on top of the spotting top: cut and bent pieces of railing to form a half pipe that I added on the back of the antennas.









So here's the spotting top. Some touch ups still to do. I am not so happy with how the 'window row' turned out, from close up it is all to clear that it is a piece of PE glued to the plastic. Concealing that would have meant quite a lot extra effort. I don't know...possibly should have tried harder. But I feel some kind of urge to get on with my project....and from a little distance the impression is ok.





And installed on the starfish and an overview. Need to do some touch ups and probably add a few details, such as ladders and access etc..., nothing in the instructions, but I think there's some on other references.

Don't beat yourself up about any less than perfect details - your Hood's spotting top, starfish, and "face" are HUGE improvements over the kit parts! I continue to enjoy watching your mighty Hood come together.

Already busy and away from home again, I'm just posting a bunch of pictures from the latest progress on my laptop...

In general the pictures should speak for themselves - small stuff like ladders, additional railings, working on Carley Floats and ammo boxes. I decided to omit the offered PE fronts to the boxes, since the molding is actually quite good and the PE parts a slightly too big. Therefor the ejector marks on the back of the boxes requires attention.

Interesting to note in the overall shots of Hood she has what seems to be quite a clean appearance with little clutter, but upon close inspection she was quite a "busy" design by the standards of her day

Seeing how good she looks almost, I say again almost, makes me think about adding her to my "list"... But then again, I Must. Empty. Stash!

Hello everybody!

Well, that's been quite a while, I had to search for my own build log....but I can proudly present an update!!

So here we go!

Rope reels installed, carley floats and preparing the ammo lockers...









Ammunition lockers shipped - this is getting the deck quite busy, and for sure I would not have wanted to be there when the first 8" shell from Prinz Eugen hit and at least part of that ammo was going off...











The last four winches installed, again North Star. They are not really fitting in the wooden deck, but I think it is sufficiently concealed..





The ladders from the Admirals Quarters down - using Eduard etch, rather fragile. Platforms first.



Those platforms rather nicely conceal the issues I had early on with the plastic deck that was awkwardly standing in the opening. I mostly fixed that, but with those platforms I think it's not visible any more.

The ladders - the rails don't fit with the platforms, I had to cut and glue some part of a railing in.











Slowly looking like HMS Hood...
