Hi Nate!

Welcome to this campaign! Grat that you are joining us, it's become a little quiet here lately.

Very nice choice to build the Dragon kit into a Z 23!! I'm really looking forward to see pictures of your build!!

Regrettably, I can't offer much references on the bout in '41, but from what I read the Dragon kit should offer an excellent start!

Cheers,
Jan

Now saying it has become quite is partly my fault, as well - so I apologise and finally have some more to show here on the campaign, as well.

I am still struggling with the forward superstructure and lower bridge / armoured conning tower.

So here are some progress pictures:

Test-fitting an a first .50 quad, only set on top for effect.

Production line for the 4" AA

First color on the lower bridge

More .50 quads - the first painted, the second one with shields

And further build up, painting and fitting of the forward structure. All test fitted only, and of course a lot of filling and sanding to follow, and painting, of course...

More soon - here as well as on my HMS Hood build log!

Cheers,
Jan

All right, to bring back some life into this campaign (and because I am a little bit in a hurry) I'll post my update here, first - it's only the short version, more detail and pictures soon on the HMS Hood build log!

So this weekend was about building the signalmen's shelter

some improvised flag lockers

more filling and sanding (of course), sanding the 4" in particular

and after some work another layer of paint on the lower bridge to control my filling/sanding endeavours. Not too bad, but more work still required...

The 'output'...

Cheers for now,

Jan

Hi Jan,

The Campaign has been a bit quiet.

Did a bit of tinkering with the twin 37mm today, nothing to post. quite a lot of coming out of the workshop, but I will crack the Pontos bits for these mounts.

Looking forward to seeing an update on Hood too Mate.

I'm going to build the Tamiya 1/350 kit (#78013) of the Bismarck for this campaign. I am also going to use the Eduard PE set for this kit.

Thanks

A Happy New Year to you all here an MSW, may 2017 bring you time at your shipyards and fine new models!!

As for me, I am realising and have to accept that I will in no way be able to finish my HMS Hood build here in time. At least not without compromising quality and detail, and I have decided not to do this but rather take all the time that I need to finish my HMS Hood in the best way that I can.

However, I want to finish this campaign, too!!

So, here is a little 'intermezzo' if you wish:

The German IX B sub U 108, nominated as one valid participant of the Bismarck chase, as it was at the place of here loss and trying to rescue survivors. However, no survivors could be found, only dead.

With this few lines on history let me come to my build, which will be almost OOB and (I hope) a rather quick one - I hope you let me get away with it?!? -I will definitely continue posting progress on my HMS Hood here after that, even without any chance to finish in time for this campaign.

So here's the kit, 1/350 Hobby Boss

Hull halves go together very smoothly, only a little bit sanding and surfacer needed and all should be fine:

Ups, almost forgot the 'time stamp':

Nice little brass stand, a nice touch be Hobby Boss:

Hull halves joined and sanded, almost ready for painting. However, details need to be added, first. The will follow next weekend.

I was hoping to make some more progress - time would have been plenty, but I caught me a nasty cold that keeps my efficiency rather limited...

Cheers,
Jan

Thank you, Michael!!

No worries about the HMS Hood - this intermezzo is by no means a 'giving up', it's rather the opposite. I want to proceed the Hood the way I started her, and that simply needs a lot more time than I anticipated when I started.
And this nasty activities during the week, that allow me buying new models and all those goodies that appear on the marked these days, aka work, for me will be rather more intense and demanding this year than last year...

I'll try to do some sub-assemblies for the Hood in between, like PomPoms etc., and post them here as well. And then it will be all full speed ahead on Hood again, but no way before May 2017...that will easily drag into 2018...

Cheers,
Jan

...and here's my micro update for the weekend...

The Hobby Boss IXB-Kit is a really nice kit and offers quite some detail OOB, - well, of course there is much room for improvement, but I am going very basic here.

Rudders added:

Some deck detail, with a little bit of washing it should be all right in the end:

The kit offers a little PE, e.g. for the turret. Test fitted - pretty nice fit!

An area of concern is the armament. Not really much to add to the 10,5cm gun other than the brass barrel. Not really perfect, but will do.

I do have a Veteran singel 37mm, but I have to verify the model, and wether I can use it. Than there is the 20mm - some sources say it's a twin, some pictures and sources show a single. I have good representations of a single I could use, but absolutely nothing for a twin...still considering, but probably I will go for the single 20mm option.

Considering the little time I had over this weekend, that IXB should be a quick one once I get some effective bench time. So I should be back to the mighty Hood rather soon.

Cheers,
Jan

Hi Jan,

Thanks for the pics of the Hobby Boss Type IX; it is one I've been considering doing. I love that there is a photoetch deck in the kit!

Very nice work on the catapult and the boats, Si!!

I have a very small update to show...somehow still fighting a cold and apparently that has some impact on the steadiness of my hands. Nothing big, but hampers working on those really tiny things, like NorthStar PomPoms.
So next to my IX B I did start one of the PomPoms for HMS Hood, but this kits are way more complex and complicated than the NorthStar 4"ers.

Here's what is in the kit:

Nice barrels, two different lengths as should be:

First steps to assemble the 'main body'...some step by step I will do later on the HMS Hood build log, once I have finished the first one and discovered some more tricks...
