Having completed HMS Aldenham, and finally found the WEM etch for the Trumpy tribal, here we go with HMS Eskimo missing her bow after the battle of Narvik.

The base kit.



The etch.



The contents of the box.



The kit has a number of issues, and 8 barrelled pompom instead of a 4, the wrong boats, odd shaped screws, and the bow.



There is a pronounced lack of sheer.

That is not a problem, North star can sort the pompom issue, I have boats in the spare's box, and as the below shows the look I am going for in this build, the bow & the screws aren't an issue.




Keel should be laid over the weekend.

Welcome aboard Mark,

It is a quite a challenge, but I have a plan, cut the bow off level with the bulkhead in the photo, and scratch build the damaged bits of hull and deck.


The base is going to fun too, with the bit of jetty, mooring wires, jetty detritus etc.

That's one word for it Tim!

As long as I remember, measure twice, cut once we should be good, the photographs give me a good idea where to cut.

You are not wrong, the Tribals were handsome ships Chuck,

There will be a late war version joining the fleet at some point, but that will be built from the WEM resin kit.

There is going to be a lot to this build, not only the damaged areas of the bow, also the scenery, getting the clutter on the jetty right, and quite a few figures too.

Here we go,

The Hull, prior to shortening test fitted on the base.



maindeck & bulkhead fitted.




A quick comparison of the size of a tribal & a mod 1936a



Fo'c's'le deck down and some etched doors fitted to the bulkhead.



Right, now it get's serious, the photos studied, the cut marked measured, the photos studied again, masking tape applied to mark the line of the cut.



The bow separated.



The forward end of B gundeck also removed and test fitted.





Plasticard bulkheads fitted.



and cleaned up,



The plan is, the door on the starboard side of B superstructure is open in the photograph, that will be opened up and some interior added, then the battered deck section fabricated, this should provide some support for the hull structure.

Hi Mark,

Having re-worked the lack of sheer on the bow once on this kit, it was actually quite cathartic solving the problem a different way.

The tricky bit is going to be getting the detail right around the shattered bow.

Thanks Russ, that is very kind, but there are plenty of more skilled modellers than me inhabiting this site.

To be fair, the production rate has gone up more due to working from home, allowing a couple of hours most evenings at the bench.

So will I, the plan is to have a good stock of thin plasticard, evergreen strip, spare etch from wherever I can find it and basically make it up as I go along, whilst staring at the photograph for inspiration.

The start of scratchbuilding the interior areas.

Etched watertight door frame fitted to cut out the open door.



Done.



Test fitted in place.



Some interior structure so there is no see through, also deck beams being fitted to the open ended section.



Tested fitted, something needs a trim. a few more details to go in, then that can be fixed in place.



In the plasticard stock I found this battered scrap end of a sheet of 10 thou, this will be just right for the open end of the hull.

The deck section marked.



Cut out, a bit of bending along the starboard edge to replicate the damage shown in the photograph.

The hull plating is going to be real fun. The doorways are bit fiddly, I did make it slightly harder by missing the open interior door in the superstructure until after the bulkhead was in place.

Even in 1/350, without them things can look a bit see through. Bit more detail to go on in the open end. Masking those open doors is going to be real fun!
