Continuing to build on their fine range of photoetch sets Gold Medal Models has announced the impending release of their WW2 USS Buchanan/Gleaves Class photoetch set .This set is expected to be available in November and the retail price is expected to be US$32.00.
This photoetch set has been primarily designed to fit Dragon's USS Buchanan/Gleaves-class destroyer (both early and late war variants) in 1/350 scale. It is expected that this kit will include amongst other things a pre-shaped set of relief-etched netted main deck rails custom-sized to precisely fit the Dragon kit together a full set of standard rails for the upper decks in several styles, including simulated canvas-covered types.   • Vertical and inclined ladders;
  • Depth charges roller racks;
  • K-gun loading racks & handling davits;
  • 40mm and 20mm anti-aircraft gun details;
  • See-through life raft bottoms and life raft paddles;
  • Propeller guards;
  • Precisely fitted funnel footrails and handrails for both funnels;
  • Boat details and rigging;
  • Mast and yardarm details;
  • A pair of pilot house lookout platforms;
  • Mk. 12, Mk. 22, SA, SC, SC-2, and SG radars;
  • ECM antennas for post-WW2 variants;
  • Stokes litters;
  • Watertight doors;
  • Floater net baskets;
  • Life preservers;
  • Antenna brackets;
  • Simulated anchor chains;

Great little set... at 32 USD it is about three times the price of the PE set bundled with the original kit, but has a LOT more goodies... seems to me (Im a newbie!) that this set is worth the extra $$, unless you have a bunch of leftover 1:350 AMs for stuff like the airtight doors?? pays to be behind the buy curve I guess....

a 350 scale Humphrey Bogart ??!!! My all time favorite actor. I might just go out and buy the ship kit and PE set just for that alone. Is the figure PE or resin?

Ahoy Mates, Having gotten the kit and both sets of PE, now looking at Lorens' offering, I think I will have to cough up the bucks. I do like what he does as far as the level of details that can be upgraded and it would appear that he has a lot more in his one set than both of the Dragon sets combined. Besides, any left over bits can be used on other builds later on down the line. The railings with the Dragon sets and the other bits from GMM's set looks like a workable idea. Is there any such thing as too much PE?
