Okay, I know it's a dumb question, but forgive a newbie here. Are scratchbuilds allowed? Pre-dreds are my all time favorite ships and I'm just starting a build of the armored cruiser New York and would love to join in on the fun.
RT

Hi Richard!

I'm glad scratchers are welcome, otherwise making an Iowa to accompany the Glencoe Oregon would be a challenge!

A little Borodino update...deck-work, and fiddly bits time!

Most of these deckhouses will be unseen due to the next deck level...

Probably won't get much done at the bench til after the holidays, but we'll see!!
I continue...

Hey Mark!

Do y'all really like the solid rail look PE gives for main deck edge railings? When working on the Nevada last month I experimented with modifying the frets to give them the slender look of cable railings the real ships had.

I'll send some pics of the technique if you'd like?

Hi Bruce!

Sure we will take the helm if necessary, but I wish that this option is here only as back-up!
I am sure your therapy will work fine - and that's the most important thing!

hello Mark and Rui,
thanks for your help.if the therapy does not work i will have to have both knees and hips replaced again along with my spine fused completely.which means a stay at hospital for 2 weeks and a body cast for 6 months.i have been under the knife over 40 times in the last 10 years and i am hoping that the therapy will work .
on a bright note i have got the paint for the USS Winslow and should start it this weekend,i hope.it will be my first resin kit and the first time i am going to use PE and White Metal parts.wish me luck.
thanks again.
cheers,
Bruce

Im' into my scratch build of my 1/120th old cruiser New York. I'm constructing this to look like a turn of the centruy modeler or maybe a boat model company like Bliss built it. It's mostly wood with printed paper. Bear with me on the water effect at the waterline - it'll make sense once you see the base.

Here is the deck (38 inches) printed out on one sheet of Bristol Board.

Fitting the printed hull sides to the wooden hull form

Hull sides fitted and glued in place.

Bow detail. All the printed Bristol Board was drawn in Photoshop.

Still have to ad all the gun sponsons on the hull sides.

Hull detail and armor belt in place.

Thanks for the compliments, Bruce. I don't know how unique my methods are - they built toy ships much like this in 1885! Here is a preview of what the New York will hopefully look like when I'm done. This is just an artistic redition of a warship, not based on anything real. The New York will be to scale and as accurate as I can make her.

Finished the most complicated of the hull side turrets - the projecting armored sections were a pain. The rest are just simple cylinders with no projections, should be a breeze after these guys.

My goodness, what a grand display of vessels thus far, great job, mates!!!

This campaign is spawning some wonderful builds, as well as future Feature articles for MSW, for sure (subtle hint to all, yes, I will be expecting submissions, my friends... )!

Carry on, mates, keep modeling!

Great assortment of Pre-Dreds. The ships are as diverse as the model scales and the building materials!

Well done folks,

Frank
