Latest update on the French Armoured Cruiser Dupleix

Hi Quintin!

A classic example of French naval architecture at the turn of the century. What a marvelous addition to any scale fleet!

Top down view of Duleix. Still like the rigging and to install the hull life boats and davits.

Sorry to hear about that Jim. It seems like Christmas time is always the preferred time for companies to trim payrolls. Keep your head up, things will get better.

Update: adding black basecoat to the hull and main structure in preperation for highlighting with dark grey

The decks have only recieved their basecoats and will be stained and pinwashed.
I am also constucting the deckhouses, and have hollowed out those big horn things on the decks(ventilation pipes?)

think a Part II for this campaign in the near future is warranted.

I plan to paint the decks by first touching up the Acrylic Deck Tan I put on as a basecoat. Then a solid coat of Future floor wax to act as a protective barrier against the oilpaint washes of Burnt umber.

Here are my decks done.

My wife is my colour editor...she felt that the decks seemed a little "too golden"in colour...does anyone have any input for me regarding this?

HI Jim!

Looking good all round.

As for the deck color (colour ), wood decks that get holystoned tend to come out white-ish, and I use an enamel ivory with dark washes. I'm sure there will be other opinions, though.

hello Jim,
i agree with Karl, the wooden decks always seems to be a whitish yellow.instead of repainting, try using a white wash to see if the deck will not lighten up.
cheers,
Bruce

Luckily I used oilpaints to darken the decks,so upon reading your posts I simply wiped off the paint with a paper towel...it worked perfectly as the colour(yes---we spell it with a "u" ) remained in the seams between boards...Ill post a pic when the light is better..

Great work Jim and Richard,.. Jim, I'd leave the deck as is, it might be a shade off, but it looks great!

Thanks Frank...
Here are some pics after removing the oil paint...I think I may do another wash to get some more contrast on those decks....

Im still working on the deckhouses and fiddlybits.....basecoats are applied and its time for refinement..

Please remember guys I have never completed a ship before .. (do U boats count???)

Work continues on the New York. This ship seems to have more sponsons on the side of the hull than any warship ever built! I'm almost done - six small ones to go. all the large sponsons are completed and the two small bow assemblies are built and attached. The artwork takes a lot longer to produce than the actual building process.

I plan to finish the rest of the sponsons this weekend - the artwork is finished - then tackle the anchor bay supports and the rear Admiral's walk.

hello Richard,
your New York is looking good.i still think that you should do a feature on how you do this type of ship builds.why don't do send an PM to mark about doing a feature.i know that a lot of people would be interested in how you do this type of a build.
thanks for the update.
cheers,
Bruce
