Is that the only one Todd??

I used the Lionroar one on my Bismark build and it was fantastic with decent instructions, unlike what I have found with Pontos unfortunately.

Simon, it will be interesting to see how you go with the sidewalls of the superstructure. The Lionroar set had everything seperate but I think with the Pontos set you replace the entire walls.

Hi Warren,

It does have sidewalls, but in relatively short sections, and with only basics like doors & porthole details, everything else has to be added. The "confusions" are better this time, 12 pages, still a little disorganised in the order, but better than dreadnought & Duke of York.

might be a while before I get onto the Bismarck as the slipways are full at the moment, but will post the build of course.

Warren I'll look into it, however at the moment I have no ref material so it'll be just the plastic.

Right firstly a order finally arrived that was placed back at the beginning of December

Then these I picked up at a show yesterday, ref for future projects, some hairy sticks and some very fine fly fishing line (stopped at a fishing shop on the way home)

And lastly at the same show picked up a heavy box

It's contents, ten of my standard size bases for Destroyer and smaller, plus four bigger bases for Cruisers and bigger. I get these made to order and then pick them up at one of the shows the trader attends, oiled mahogany.

Postie brought these today

A book on the battles of Guadalcanal (future campaign anyone?) and some detail stuff from North Star including a lot of different search lights and the new RN directors, also got some little crew members to stand on the decks of some U-boats.

Luciano,

very nice haul. I have found that I am quite taken with the North Star products and have a few in my stash.

I would be interested in a Guadalcanal Campaign, might even be one that we can bring in the ground guys along with the airdales!!!

Hope the book is a good read.

Thanks Dave, I think there's a lot of scope for a Guadalcanal campaign but we better get the others out the way first

Anyways had to go and collect a large parcel which arrived from Japan from the post office yesterday inside was:

Plus the Fujimi 1/350 Zuikaku, however I ordered the DX version and received the Spot 36 version so no picture until I get it sorted out.
For those that don't know the DX version comes with the pe sets while the spot 36 comes with extra aircraft, 36 to be exact.

Up date to the above, been in touch with the vendor and they are sending out the Fujimi premium photo etch set via express mail and apologised for the mix up, so all happy.

Signal flags have arrived

Two packs arrived with two sheets of decals in each so that should keep me going for a little while.

Small haul from Southern Expo Today.

Wingy Thingy, but naval related.

Second hand, but wood deck & eduard etch in the box.

Good price and for the prospective Guadelcanal campaign.

Picked this up for a mad idea. (see one of the two books below)

Day 2 of Southern Expo, and a bit of luck in the raffle.

And after seeing Dave (Rolltide31)'s Maya build, this was on a trade stand across the isle calling to me.

It is Haguro, and in the end I could not resist.

My share on purchases from the show at the weekend, some items ordered in advance for collection at the show.

Oh I also picked up a second hand Revell Tirpitz, not quite as good as Simon but mine was £40 with the eduard photo etch sets.

Reference material first

now the rest

And finally a photo of the Zuikaku spot 36 with the pe to make it a DX which I ordered.

Si / Luciano,

Very nice haul from the show. The IJN Hagoru is especially surprising to see as I didn't even know it was produced. A very rare and elusive gem, great find Si.

I too had a little visit from the postman last week.

Unfortunately I dont have a picture but I received the Kagero Super Drawings in 3D for the IJN Kongo and some IJN Fire Control Systems from Veteran Models.

They will both com in handy when I tackle the Kongo here in the next few months.

Great haul gentlemen

Si,

referring to one of your earlier posts - you are not seriously considering to build the Trumpi Graf Spee into Lutzow, are you?!? You could as well go with your book on the left hand side and build her into a Hipper

But well, should you try this (the Lutzow I mean) would be a great endeavor - completely different ships, barely half-sisters, but I would certainly follow with highest interest!! (Maybe something for the cruisers campaign??)

Great idea though

Cheers,
Jan

Hi Jan,

The plan is Lutzow, I know I am taking liberties as the hulls were not identical, the superstructure is a complete scratchbuild, and I will need some aftermarket light AA, but the turrets, boats, and small details will be usable.

Unless of course Trumpy or somebody vbrings out the Lutzow, then it will be a post refit Scheer.

Yes, I know I am "slightly" mad.

Simon and Jan,

Ive been looking on Wiki, but I dont quite follow Simon's plans for building the Lutzow. Why is it special, what is the main difference between the ships? (they are the same class, correct?) Why cant the Lutzow/Deutchland keep its name straight.

Thanks in advance for the history/naval architecture lesson,
Bryan

Hi Bryan,

The Deutschland (as she was when she was launched) was the first ship in the class, and the Graf Spee the third. I intend to build her as Lutzow (renamed early 1940) around the time of the Battle of the Barent sea in 1942.

The Hull differences I haven't checked out fully, but there are some. The Superstructure is completely different, the forebridge is rounded at the front, instead of the tower supporting the main fire control, there is a heavy pole foremast, the funnel I think is narrower and has a raked cap, the funnel platform is a different shape, the mast mainmast is different, the after superstructure looks narrower at first blush, but I haven't checked yet, platforms on the after superstructure are all different.

Main, secondary and heavy AA layout is the same, extra light AA needed, catapult is between the funnel and the bridge, but looks the same piece of kit, boats layout is the same, but should be able to use the kit boats, as they are the same.

The hort answer is a complete rebuild from the maindeck upwards.

Want to build it mostly out of interest in the arctic convoys.

Si
