Back again (call of nature..)

Now for an update on the current state of the Snowberry.

A funny thing I saw when going to remove the roof of the boiler room from its sprue..

Why did you bother Revell. I think most people would know the origins of the kit...

First thing this morning, after applying a few coats of grey to diverse pieces of the model, like these ammo boxes..

I decided to tackle the funnel next. It is a lovely piece of PE and comes pre-rolled. Only hard bit was getting the araldite inside the funnel. After I did that and let the two coats dry for a little while I applied the brass and wrapped it is a couple of elastic bands until it dried..

Next I decided to paint the 20mms and apply the sites I left off previously not wanting to knock them off while painting,,

Then I applied some PE to some air intakes for the boiler room. Strange thing is that I had already put one of the PE pieces on each of these itemsbut I can't remember when I did it.. or what PE set the pieces came from..

Then I prepared the brackets the 20mm gun-tubs sit on on the deck. After I painted them..

.. I cut them out and bent them as required. Then I went back to the funnel where I applied extra-thin CA cement to the top and bottom of the funnel to fill in any gaps the araldite missed..

And apply the funnel cap..

Remind me ot paint the interior black. See the nice detail on the funnel..

That's it for now. I will paint the boiler room and funnel tomorrow with any luck.

Regards
Warren

Warren,

Amazing work. All the kits appear to be quite the beasts to tackle and you my friend seem to have tackled them with ease.

Can't wait to see an overview shot of the whole project.

Hello Dave.

Not much has changed with the hull since my last overview shots but it will change a bit today as I want to get hte boiler room in place after I paint it today.

Cheers mate

Well its time for the last update for this weekend, which was fairly productive really.

First up for David, here are a couple of photos showing how she sits at the moment..

:)

Sorry mate but I am not risking getting it down off the shelf with the run of luck I have been having with some things lately! Don't worry, I will take some better ones next Tuesday.. Why Tuesday? Cause it is a public holiday here, Australia Day!

Next up I constructed and attached this small room to the front of the boiler room. No idea what it is as I haven't got my reference work next to me.

After I let it dry I painted it..

Will paint the roof later.

While waiting for the room addition to dry I started on the main mast, all 20+ cm of it..

As with most diecast parts it was bent. If and when I ever build my other Snowberry I will be using brass pipe for the mast as it is much stronger, lighter, and you can solder it! Winner! Here is the crows nest after cleanup..

Then the little wire cage that goes around the crows nest.. This was fun to solder.. not! Just had to set it all up and touch the iron to it for a about a second.

While I was packing up I heard a tiny 'tink' and sure enough it had come apart. I attacked it again and it is still holding.

For such a large scale ship there are some tiny PE parts, like these brackets at the top of the mast..

Which looks like it needs some more cleanup. Thanks macro lens..

Here is the crows nest attached to the mast.

And finally I cleaned up the splinter padding and gave them a coat of paint.

And that's it for now. Slowly but surely running out of WEM Western Approaches White. The bad news is that we haven't got a distributor in Australia with any stock at the moment, and Sovereign Hobbies won't send them to me for some unknown reason. If it is the old idiot idea that they are somehow going to explode and destroy the aircraft they are being transported in all I can say it that the oil and grease used in the engines, and all the cardboard in the boxes on board are far more dangerous than a tiny tin of paint.

Sigh..

Cheers

Happy Australia Day, mate

Coming along very nicely indeed!!!

I see you've struck the inverse rule of model making: the larger the scale, the more fiddly the detail

Indeed it is a stupid rule that postal services will no longer carry enamel paints by air mail!!! now you need all the stupid permits to freight enamel paint o/s & I believe the ban was one of the major contributing factors in WEM going bust about a year ago, since I suspect a good portion of their revenue came from colour coats.

Anyhow, if you haven't already, give Creative Models Australia a try-they're my main source of colour coats now & saved a few of my projects from the abyss!!!

Warren,

absolutely fantastic work!! Yep, as Russ said, the 'inverse rule' - an amazing amount of tiny parts - but they bring the ship to live!!

The funnel and your Oerlikon in your previous post really look outstanding, too!!

Stupid thing indeed Russell, The thousands of gallons of jet fuel on the aircraft is just a little more dangerous than a properly sealed little tin of paint as well.

But I have only been working on or around aircraft since about 1981 so what would I know!

The inverse-detail-rule is pretty correct mate. But only if you are building the boat with the GLS kits. Otherwise it would be a pretty easy kit to build. I may be able to tell you soon as I have a Premium Edition Snowberry waiting in the wings I can build as the Bluebell or HMCS Sackville which I have tons of photos of.

Cheers mate and thanks

Hi Jan.

The Oerlikons are great little kits by themselves. When you build the Snowberry using all the GLS stuff you are really building about 10 different kits that all go together to make the one ship.

Thanks again,

Happy Australia Day (for yesterday)..

I have got the lurgi so stayed at home all day yesterday and spent it mainly either sleeping or in the hobby room so I got lots of little fiddly bits done.

First up, I attached the supports for the 20mms to the deck..

Then I attached the roof to the radar lantern..

After those two I attached the cage to the crows nest..

Then one of the vents on the stack..

And a little mast off that..

My new hedgehog set arrived during the week so I formed up the part I destroyed earlier and put it in position in the base..

Its the bit with all the slats...

Then it was the turn of the 20mms to get their magazines fitted..

Here is a piccy showing the mast in position (but not glued yet)..

Then I attached all the little pieces to the yard arm and installed it on the mast..

Then I tackled something I was dreading. one of the long ladders. This one goes up the stack, or will when I attach it..

And that was it except for a few other things I didn't photograph as they were very minor.

Cheers

Looking really good. The mast is indeed very delicate. When it came to rigging I added ez line to the mast/yards prior to fitting the mast to the deck. But thats some way off yet I imagine.

Thanks Colin, and yes, that is at least a day off!

I got sent home from work so I wouldn't spread my disease

So its off to the hobby room again..

I am sorry it wasn't a better shot of the hull, bit I have a vision of me going to bring it down and it drops off the stand..

I will do it after the wheel room stuff arrives and I put them in place. It looks very bare in there with nothing.

Thanks for the well wishes. I got sent home from work so I have another day to waste, sorry, spend in the hobby room.

Great work, Warren - inverse rule of model making at its best!! Amazing amount of detail! Funnel and mast look excellent! But the Oerlikons are just great!!! They should look fantastic once in place on the bridge wings!!

Enjoy your extra day in your hobby room, if your lurgi allows to!

I spent a little while in there until I had lunch, watched a movie and put together some Ikea stuff while watching it.

Photos later.

Hello everyone.

Welcome to today's thrilling installment of 'The Corvette Takes Shape'.

First up the ladder is attached to the funnel as is a couple of vents..

Then I painted the base and cover for the hedgehog ASW system..

Then I finally touched some parts I painted about 4 months ago. I painted the tops of all the lockers..

Next to a kit part not covered in any of the sets I have (I think..) I believe this is an exhaust vent from the roof of the map room which must come from the bowels of the ship. The two vertical pipes where moulded closed. A simple job to drill them out if you remember to first drill a pilot hole and then slowly increase the size of the drills you use to stop ripping the plastic.

Much of the rest of the day was taken up with painting the funnel etc..

Then I put the hedgehog mortars in their place. No I just have to line them all up and try not to break any off. The metal used is very soft..

And that's all for today. Hopefully I will get some more time in the room tomorrow to continue with the lockers that attach to the top of the map and boiler rooms. All very badly moulded. Seems 'M' Sprue is the bogey with this particular model and the lockers are requiring lots of putty to get into decent shape. I wish GLS supplied brass ones.

Oh well..

Cheers

Warren,

Amazing work. The Hedgehogs look pretty menacing all installed and ready for launch.

Your paint job is crisp and clean, are you using an airbrush or hand painting.

Amazing work with everything, Really enjoy following your build.

Thanks Dave.

I don't know if I will add any other colour to the mortars. I see HMCS Sackville has yellow bands arround each one, but Revell suggest a red top for each one. The yellow ban would be impossible (for me) using the GLS set as I would have to remove each mortar from its mount and then try and install them all after painting.. Not going to happen I am afraid. The other option I had, and the one no one seems to use, would be to just close the lid of the launcher.. Problem solved.

It depends on the part etc as to whether I spray it or hand paint it. The white parts of the funnel and boiler room etc where all sprayed with WEM RN10 White. But unfortunately it seems I can't get it here at the moment and am running out quickly. My other option is Life color Western Approaches (WA) white BUT I can't spray it easily as it keeps clogging up whatever airbrush I use except for my ancient Paasche single action one which I am waiting for a quick disconnect for so I can use it with my not-so-ancient, very much smaller and very much quieter compressor.

All the blue and black are hand painted Lifecolor WA paints which cover pretty well only needing two coats, and dry to a very nice matt finish. The grey is a WEM colour as well but I am right for that colour at the moment.

Can anyone out there help me obtain the WEM RN10 White?

Well, it is that sad time of the week when freedom is almost at an end and it is back to work tomorrow.

But I got a few things done today. First up I added the big vent pipe to the funnel..

Then I started with the various lockers etc that sit on top of the chart room and boiler room..

All except that one are various sized lockers which I won't bother with here. Then I finished off the hedgehog..

That back area could have lots of wires etc and I may add a few before I attach it to the deck. All depends on how much of the lid is visible.

The rest of the day was spent painting lockers etc. Some things seen to need painting over and over. I have real trouble with sharp edges (eg roof and wall join). I normally have to do them lots of times until I ge them right. Anyone know a fool proof way without resorting to masking tape?

Cheers all until next time

Warren,

another great update looks like you've had a pretty productive weekend!!

That hedgehog really looks amazing!! I do have a week spot for those really detailed and almost operative looking things! Like your Oerlikon as well...

For painting sharp edges - well, I assume you are talking hairy stick business, are you? I tend to mess that up pretty frequently, as well... different story entirely with the airbrush, but I don't think that was your question?

Thanks Jan.

Yes, the hairy stick process. Airbrush is fine either using masking tape or the right angle for spraying.
