good to see you trucking on during the festive season and not giving in the the heat![]()
Merry Christmas and happy new Year everyone!![]()
Heat gets a bit high I just walk over to the button on the wall and press it, A few minutes later the house is cool..
Cheers Russell
Warren
hehe-that would be the same 'button' i refer to mate, but sometimes it just gets so hot, that not even that works![]()
The man cave (garage) doesn't have one of those 'buttons' either-so no painting![]()
You have to walk all the way out to the garage to do modelling? That was a bit short sited my friend.. My hobby room (no man-caves for me. Only nut jobs live in caves.. oh and people in Coober Pedy) is right next to the kitchen where the fridge resides.. and the freezer and the pantry and near a toilet.. I think you get the idea..
Finished the bridge supports today. Painting and more photos tomorrow.
Just painting and soldering in the garage my friend
and car related stuff too
All other modelling takes place at my desk right in the lounge in the full view of the big screen surround system
Btw there's a fridge in the garage also that's well stocked with life's essentials. IE beer and wine

Thank you Simon and Russell.
Happy New Year to one and all and welcome to my first update for 2016. If you had told me back in June I would still be building this thing I would have laughed at you. I believe I am past half-way with the building bit, but have lots of other stuff to do after that is finished.
Be that as it may lets get on with the update, which will be in two parts as it is a bit big.
First up was the bridge wing supports. These consisted of quite a few parts, one support I super glued the pieces on whereas the other one I soldered , just to see which turned out to be easier.
A couple of pics of the glued one..
Then the soldered one..
Glued one may look a bit cleaner but the soldered on is much stronger, and you can clean it up with a rotary wire brush.
Then the other sides of the supports with the centre brackets in place..
Both have since been painted and put aside.
Next up was the shed under the radar antenna. This started as a flat piece of brass which required a few rivets to be pressed into..
After that I bent it up and attached the top plate for mounting the antenna to..
Then the bracing brackets were attached..
Then one of the few kit parts used as the mount for the antenna..
Then I started on the antenna itself. First up the brass was heated to make bensing easier..
Then curved it..
Then soldered it up to form the outside of the antenna..
Then the centre part was glued in place..
And that is all for the moment. Next update should be up in an hour or so.
Cheers
Warren

Welcome to Part 2!
Had to eat my dinner and rather than risk losing it all I saved it. Next up I glued the antenna to the base..
Then I laminated together two parts of the stanchions to form one thicker one and glued them in place..
To date, three have been knocked off.. Remember what I said about sticky uppy things?
Then a coat of paint..
And that was put aside to be attached to the deck later. Next up was the lantern part of the radar. Two flat pieces of etch trimmed and soldered together to form the inner and outer parts..
As it turned out the outer would not even go close to goinfg over the inner so I de-soldered the outer nd cut it into a number of smaller pieces I then soldered to the inner to form this assembly..
Sorry it is a bit blurry. After cleaning it up with my little wire brush I test fitted it to the platform..
After that I took it off and sprayed it WA White...
Does anyone know what colour it is supposed to be inside?
Then we have a couple of smaller than 1 mm brackets for the platform..
Then to glaze the lantern I found some clear plastic my toothbrush came in and cut it to the correct width.

Using Window Glue I put two pieces in place and clamped them with tweezers. We will see if they stuff tomorrow..
Then I went and grabbed all the voice-tubes I had been fiddling with and glued them in place on the deck..
And that is it for now. Next up is glueing the deck in place and the wing supports.
Cheers

Know what you mean about "sticky uppy things". Spent many a happy hour scouring the workshop floor for bits like that I have knocked off. Glad to see everything is back in place.
The bridge wing supports are a real piece of engineering, and the radar lantern is looking great, good luck with glazing it.

Warren,
a happy New Year to you!!
Great start into 2016 with an update and progress like that!!
What everybody said so far, no doubt, that is some great work, with the radar, the lantern and constructing those bridge wing supports!! This is fantastic detail, first time I have an idea how those lanterns looked inside
you clearly prove that even in a bigger scale, work can be very delicate!!
Cheers,
Jan

Hello everyone.
Time for another update.
First up the glazed lantern housing..
The plastic and Testors Clear Plastic glue did the job with the help of T1 and T2.. Tweezer 1 and Tweezer 2 of curse.
After that I started on the hedgehog that sits on the foredeck. and things were about to go pear-shaped. But first here is the bass all folded and soldered and glued..
That is when the fun began... I started by bending pieces that didn't need bending. I straightened them out fine. It was wheb I went o try and solder them it went wrong. The silder didn't seem to want to stick to one of the pieces of brass foldered over another. I tried and tried and in the end the tweezers slipped and there was enough heat to melt the side I had soldered up successfully. When they slipped and both sides sprung out leaving blobs of solder in the tracks I needed to be clean I just lost it.. I whacked the piece a few times with some pliers then to make sure of the jo I got my PE scissors and cut the damn thing in half. I calmly put all my tools down, took off my glasses and magnifying head piece and left the room.. and went straight to DJ Parkins and ordered another hedgehog kit.
Then we have a couple of piccies of the base with the accessories glued on..
The I did the lid for the system when there are ni bombs installed (I presume)

That's it for now. Oh I almost forgot.. this came yesterday..

It joins my PT-596, St Nazaire Raide MTB and normal MTB in the stash.. all 1/35 and I am looking forward to them.. one day.. If I ever finish Beryll.. That is what I shall call the Corvette.. Beryll (Dunno why it just poped into my head. Might be the wine I had with our excellent dinner)

Its funny, NOT. I too ended up getting another hedgehog from Parkins! He must be doing a good trade in these PE parts.

Yes, you may be right. Was it the same part you had problems with? The one that supports the bombs?cloggerdemps

I cant remember what went wrong sorry. Its a lovely detailed piece of kit. Its funny but once its painted and positioned on deck I feel people won't notice or appreciate the quality of the work.

Coming along nicely, Warren, despite your setback.
Colin, I've seen modelers highlight certain build aspects to a model by doing something to draw attention to it like placing figures near or around the component. Maybe putting crew figures doing maintenance or checks on the Hedgehog system.

Thanks Michael.
And it is time for yet another update on the weekend's achievements. We won't mention the small loss of temper..
Anyway, first up is a picture showing all the bits waiting to be attached to the bridge, oh and some old Matchbox cars I just happen to have..
After that was put in the wardrobe for safety, and I covered the hull to keep the dust off, it was time to start another small set..
Consisting of..
A sheet of PE, relief etched, a bag of cast parts and that's it.
The first thing to do was cut up the details for the two gun mounts. You started with this..

and this..

Cut up the details bit to get these..

Then glued them in place to get this..

That was all for the stand for the moment, then it was onto the gun itself. First was the mount..

Then you laminated three pieces together to get one side of the cradle..

Then it was added to one side of the barrel..

Then laminated three more pieces together for the other side..

And glued that assembly to the other side of the barrel./

Then I started on the shields, not forgetting to make the rivets..

.. which are difficult to see in these photos..
Be that as it may that is the end of this weekend's last update.
Hope you are still enjoying the build.
Cheers
Warren

Warren,
I can feel your pain about the hedgehog!! One of those things that can kill your motivation entirely, so glad to see you were able to overcome and carry on!
Great work!
The oerlikon - wow. And I thought my little PomPom kit was a kit inside the kit...that's something right there! Looking forward to see it finished!!

Jan

Oh it did kill it dead for an hour or two.. but I am the sort of person who won't let a stuff up, even a major one, set me back (remember my Akagi?)

Anyway, it would appear that I overlooked the fact that I need to cut a large area away from part of the gun tub before ore I put the rings in place. Fundly enough I read this bit then overlooked it somehow, maybe because it is not high-lighted in the instructions.. But a good tradesman never blames his tools (but who said I am a good traesman?)
. But it is nothing a ruler, a marker and a linisher belt with a fine belt can't fix!... But thanks again Jan. If you really like stopping doing something because it feels good when you do don't worry about hitting your head against a brick wall, just start a huge ship project!!
:)
Cheers mate

Truly amazing work Warren.
I guess we all have those moments when you just want to sink the ship, launch the plane etc and you need to leave the room before returning to the coalface. Glad you made it back for this one.
