Warren,

The bridge structure is looking good - can't wait to see the magic I know you are gonna work on it!

Hi Tim.

Not sure it is magic...

Wish I had magic enough to know next weeks lotto numbers.

Couldn't leave it alone and had to fix it as soon as possible Todd.

Anyway, another saying comes to mind, feast or famine.. yes this is a fairly large update after I managed to sit at the hobby desk for over 6 hours today.

First up, the brass wood bits had to be painted black first to try and pick out the details better, and to act as an undercoat of sorts. So it was out with the trusty Tamiya XF-1 and some X-20A Thinners and on went the black..

Just on that, have you ever had a brand new piece of equipment to use but continue to use the old one? This spray booth has bits broken on the side panels but I still keep using it for some reason when there is a brand newy in the wardrobe..

Then I hit the black bits with Deck Tan XF-55..

See how the details are bought out a bit?

Next up the repaired bridge structure..

I can't remember if I have posted piccies of the painted hose reels either..

Detail work not done yet. Then we have a couple of different types of life raft stowage assemblies. Bottom view..

And view from the side that will be facing the water..

And another type..

Then a painted gun before the camo colours are applied..

Then I applied the planking to the bridge external walkway..

Never can have too many clamps..

I must have gone a little heavy with the Buff there as the detail is not as sharp..

And finally, an ladder..

Which are some of the trickiest things to build.

That's it for now.

Cheers
Warren

Great work Warren.

FWIW, I was in Malaysia Last weekend hanging out at a local hobby shop, I met a guy from Ireland that was working on his Flower there at the shop. Finally saw the hull up close and personal. It's huge!. Looking forward to more build pics.

Great work as always, sad to hear about that silly masking tape, but good to see that you've recovered...

It is rather big isn't it. Now imagine how big the PE pieces for the deck are...

What are the hobby shops in Malaysia like?

They are truly painful Colin as you know. I have developed a technique using two different types of glue and it seems to work. Soldering is out as I have no heatsinks at the moment and other things soldered in place fall off when the heat hits them..

Cheers mate

What are the hobby shops in Malaysia like?

Excellent question. Smart ass answer is "Few and Far Between". I only located this on World Hobby Miniatures from a Poster here on Kitmaker. They are definitely hard to find. All told I think I have a stash (~200 kits) that rivals his inventory. Mostly armor and aircraft, very few ships, no cars. Almost no American (Revell, AMT) kits, no European (Airfix, Italeri) kits, a few Korean kits. A smattering of Tamiya armor. The majority are Chinese makers, Kitty Hawk, GWH, Hobby Boss, Takom(?) and Light (OK, it's Irish, but made in China). Plenty of aftermarket, resin, photo etch and decals. I don't think he sells many kits off the shelf, but instead pulls together very large size orders from local modelers and smaller shops and acts more like an importer / wholesaler. He also has a small part of the shop open for drop in building sessions. There's even a compressor available for airbrushing.

The model work I've seen is fantastic. Vast majority is 1/48 or larger. I expected to see lots more 1/72 work considering the limited housing space available. Check out their work atPLAMO Aces.

Ahoy Warren

Nice to see you back at this again post Bathhurst.

Great work thus far - must confess I haven't looked in for a wee while and I am staggered with your progress.

You got 6 hours at the modeling desk wow! I am seriously jealous!

Cheers

Thanks for the info Mark.

Sean, my boy, it is Bathurst, not Bethhurst... tut tut..

Something amazing happened this afternoon when I realised it was time to attach the bridge to the deck. And while I was there I thought I would put the main gun in place as well.

Hmmm.. don't know what Google have done to their photo hosting but the location is about 17843 characters long!!

Oh well, the bridge will be being attached this evening then I can start putting the upper deck on etc.. after it is painted of course...

Cheers for now

I have no idea either Russell but it would be too big a job to rehost them all so they could be seen again. Sorry.

Anyway...

We are having Christmas in November here today with Weber-baked ham, turkey and roast vegies followed by home made cupcakes... Can anyone say food coma?

But anyway, I thought I would do a quick update.

The bridge is fastened to the deck now. And now it is time to prepare the roof of the wheelhouse (or whatever the lower bridge deck is called).

Here is an overall view of the current work stuff..

Then the roof itself...

Which threw up some interesting bending requirements.

Then we have the front fairing of the bridge itself..

It is sitting waiting for some bending action tomorrow. If I survive dinner...

Cheerio for now!

Hi Warren,

Some real etch engineering going on, the colour for the planking on the bridge looks really good.

Warren,

I quite enjoy stopping by and seeing your progress. It is always a treat to see what gigantic piece of photo etch you have tackled and mastered. Amazing work.

looking forward to seeing some photos of the full ship soon.

Hope the food coma was not too disabling..

Hi Dave.

The food coma didn't occur as I held back a bit. Got to lose a few kilos etc etc.

Glad to be of service with the build.

Good luck with the bends required for the bridge. I had to order another PE bridge as I didn't like the result of my first attempt. I had trouble with the bending of the front corners of the bridge where there is a double thick wall.
Plus I was very nervous when it finally came to fixing the bridge to the deck. I wanted to make sure the tiny lugs on the 3 supports fitted exactly into the holes in the deck. In fact I added thin stiff wire to the 3 uprights that support the front of the bridge. This made it much easier to pass the wire through the holes in the deck and thus correctly locate the supports onto the deck. (I made the 3 holes in the deck bigger as well. The epoxy glue I used would conceal any gaps left.

And yet it came out fine mate. I just made sure the bridge lined up with the holes for the ladders. I am not a rivet counter and I get it as close as possible but try not to go back and second guess myself.

And there is normally something that will cover any goofs with this build.

:)

OK. Another part of the bridge is done. Well except for a few folds..

Oh I forgot, there is also a strip to solder around the base, but that is being done on the weekend. Here is the setup I used to hold the pieces in position.

I also folded up some left over brass strip and used it to make some brackets to give the joins some more strength.

Just like the two in that piccy.. two you say? yes, there is one under the solder at the bottom of the photo. The soldering is a little messy but it won't be seen when it is all finished.. No idea what colour it has to be in there as yet but I will look at my photos on the weekend.

And that is it for now. I am going to solder the structure onto the roof of floor of the upper deck where it will sit just like in the following piccy..

That's it for now.

Cheers
