Ahoy Warren

Nice work this far.

Those stanchions look nice.

Where did you get them from if you don't mind me asking?

They look great are they easy to work with.

I thought a set maybe good for a future S100 project as they are in 1/72nd scale.

Enjoy Bathhurst I will look for you in the crowd while I am watching it on the television here in New Zealand.

Cheers

Sean

Hi Sean.

Bathurst was enjoyed each day except at the very end when a Holden won..

Great stuff, pity the detail on the gun becomes hidden within the outer casing.

Warren,
That gun shield looks dead on, very tidy solder job. The view inside underscores just how cramped it must have been for the crew working the weapon - especially lurching around in an unquiet Atlantic with an unhappy U-Boat at the other end!

Thanks Colin. Yes all the detail gets hidden especially when it is very 'busy' around the back of the gun and that hides the detail even more!

Thanks Colin. I have very little sympathy for the U-Boat drivers hiding below the waves.

Thanks Simon.

Hello Everyone.

Well after a week at work to recover from my holiday I actually sat down at the bench for a while today... Yes yes I know that is amazing but here is an update for your viewing, and reading, pleasure.

Most of the stuff I did today involved painting bits for the 4 inch gun mount.

Lots of little fiddly things, a few ready ammo boxes, stanchions and some ladders. I am mixing up what white I paint what parts between these two,

for a little variety.

While I was waiting for those to dry I started reading the hedgehog and bridge instructions. I found a small mistake in your instructions Mr Parkins.

See where it says to assemble parts F13 etc etc as per kit instructions? Well the kit instructions say differently..

It should read F13, F16, F17 and F18.. which I have glued together and will leave a week or so to set..

Then, because I didn't really want to bend and assemble each of the shell holders, for a number of reasons, I bought some 3D printed ones. Underneath..

Top..

As you can see from the following photo you do lose a lot of detail..

But I still have the brass parts and when I have a break later I may just do them if I can find a good photo of one.. There are only 38 to go after all... well 39 if that one is incorrect, 0.0%, rubbihs etc etc.

Cheers for now

Nice to see some progress Warren.

I agree, those 3D printed shell racks do look a bit bland, any way to combine some of the brass with the printed parts as a base?

or is that over complicating the issue.

Cheers..

I finally worked out good system bending the PE for the shell holders. It involved bending parts before detaching the PE from the sprues. I'll have to go back to my photos to see exactly how I did it. But I think the results looked respectable. However I did have to order a 2nd PE set😅

Warren,

Your Corvette is coming along nicely. It does appear to be one hell of a project what with all the fiddly parts and the deep detailed sub assemblies. My hat is off to you on your perseverance and skill.

Hi Simon.

The only reference photo I have fopr the holders was taken on HMCS Sackville and they appear to b much closer to the 3D printed ones than the brass ones.. the plot thickens...

Cheers mate

No worries. Im in Sydney on a course at the moment. When I get back next week I'll post some photos. I can remember that it was really useful making the small triangular wings bend and the base bend first with the shell holders still attached the sprue. I used 2 razor blades.

No worries Colin.

I had a look in my AOTS book and there are drawings of the shell holder. Now I have some idea of what it is supposed to look like I will have another try. I think annealing the pieces may make a big difference as well.

Warren,

that's quite some progress since last time I could watch your build log!! Great work!! The 4" turned out really nice!

The PE parts for the round definitely look better than the printed one...however, that sanity thing... Great work in any case!!

Hi Jan.

I have tried a few more of the brass ones and I don't think it is possible to do them time after time without a special jig. I will make one later and do them. For now I may temporarily use the 3D printed ones and replace them later.

Thanks Jan

Hello everyone.

Contrary to what you all may be thinking I have not totally stopped my Snowberry build, but I have slowed down for a few weeks now..

I have been on the part where I build up the bridge structure for quiet a while, and here are some photos of it..

And then I masked it up ready for painting the green and blue bits..

And that is how it sat for a little while while I was painting the blue and green bits. Then I removed the masking tape this morning and a slight problem arose.. One of the masking tapes I used had left all its adhesive behind when I removed it.. ^&%^&%^&%&%&^%&^&%!!

Too say I was a little peeved would be a slight understatement, but instead of flinging the bridge into a corner and crying I went to the cupboard and got the only thing I know that removes adhesive, eucalyptus oil. It may remove adhesive but unfortunately it also removes WEM Colourcoats paint... so all that lovely warm white I had masked up with that USELESS tape got removed.

I then removed all the residue with alcohol then sanded the bits for good measure before brushing on the paint. Didn't feel like setting up the spray booth etc for such a small job.

After that disaster was fixed I masked up the brass frets where the planking is for the wooden floors of the bridge and painted them black to try and accentuate the nail s and grooved between the planks. I will paint it deck buff tomorrow morning. No wood grain will be applied as this is 1/72 and when you look as wood from scale distances you don't see no wood grain. Same as this idea that you can see panel gaps on aircraft.. or that all aircraft are always filthy dirty.. madness I tells you, madness!!

Anyway. enough for now. Might have another update for tomorrow.

Cheers
