I started her sister ship the Hipper last month. I am working opposite of you doing the superstructure and other stuff on top of deck first prior to working hull. Using the MK wood deck and brass sets from Eduard. Dragon ship kits seem to have so-so fit don't they

It was worth the wait Russell, looks beautiful on the wooden base. Amazing what you can do with a hairy stick

Thankyou Julian Well, the hairy stick came out last night and paint was applied to the aft deck area where I'd missed it with the airbrush. So back on track now...

Wow how did I miss this build, I'm following along now Russell.

Hoping for a Prinz Eugen to join my stash soon.

:) Welcome aboard Luciano The Prinz is an interesting ship, no doubt about it and will keep you busy for a while

Hi Steve good choice of topic!

I agree, the Trumpeter kits, whilst covering many topics that have been overlooked for many a year by the old guard of kit makers, they are a bit hit and miss.

I think you might be starting with the easiest part of the kit, by working on the superstructure first-wait till you have to join the upper and lower hull halves as good as the tooling might be, plastic does as plastic does and I found it a lot of work to work out all the mismatch between the two.

The MK deck is okay, but in a few areas I had to 'tweak' it quite a bit to get it to sit down flush...

But hey, that's why it's called 'model making' not 'paint by numbers' I guess

Many thanks, everyone!

hopefully the varnish will go on without any problems, lately I've struck a bit of a rough patch with varnishes, so fingers crossed.

Russell,

I'll be watching!

I'd buy this model just for the box art!

oh wow! I can't believe nearly a year's gone by since I last made an update here!

Well, time to remedy that!

Since the pressure's off finishing the King in time for the battleship campaign, I can now move some dockyard workers back to the Prinz!

so here we are on 31st July for an update on the boat deck, or whatever the correct name is for it

so the kit part has solid walls for the railings as you can see here

but in Kagero's 3d book, you can see they are not solid

so walls removed with the intention of scratching something later on

seams are being filled too. I've had to pack out the end of the part with some spare sprue to make sure the sides sit flush

and looking much better

well, hopefully this build can get under way again, and move parallel to the King with the intention of completion at the same time. I need to clear this and the King off the bench so as to attack the stash which has gotten out of control of late

I'm still not sure whether to enter the cruiser campaign or not with the Prinz. Can I get a show of hands please?

Thanks for looking

Russell,

Glad to see your back on the Prinz a. I have him in the stash myself. If you don't enter the Prinz a what would you enter? I vote for the Prinz!!

hehehe... Based on my glacial building pace, I wouldn't enter the cruiser campaign, unless it was with the Prinz

Hi Russ,

Nice to see the Prinz coming on. Not sure in Kreigsmarine terminology, but in RN it would be the "Shelter Deck".

Will open a thread for the Cruiser campaign when I get home this evening.

Cheers.

Hi Russ!!

Great to see an update on your Prinz, I am really exited to see her back on your shipyard!!

Please do enlist and make this one part of the cruiser campaign, she will be a great contribution - and don't worry about your speed...I am not really any faster than you...

Cheers

26th August update...

When I removed the molded on doors and started cleaning up the seams from the shelter deck, I must have done a lot more damage than I thought. This will teach me to pay more attention in the future when I start building up the upper superstructure.

Pics...

Next step is to finish sanding with P600 grit paper, then start filling in the stair well recesses and adding nice shiny brass doors etc.

Hopefully I can finish this build by the due date for the cruiser campaign. Currently suffering from serious burn out caused by the horror movie that is "NIGHT OF THE POM POM" over at the yard building the KGV!

Thanks for looking

Russ,

I just love the Prinz Eugen, and I know you will transform this one into a jewel - take your time!! At times our hobby can be somewhat frustrating, I just struggled with those twin Oerlikons for two weeks before I got them the way I wanted.
Great to see progress here and don't let your horror movie 'The night of the PomPoms' get you down...

Cheers

Thanks guys

getting there slowly... The pom poms are just such intensive build ups with so many small details that they really do take a long time-that 1/24 78 trans am that's been sitting on the bench for over a year now is looking like a nice little break from the salty side of things as these two beasties draw nearer the finish line
