Great finish Si!

Another fine addition to Fleet RedDuster!

Definitely deserves a few to be cracked open in her honour!

Gents I was pondering wooden decks in WW2. From what limited sources I have seen most US ships painted the decks for camouflage. The RN didn't? After all Stukas sank alot of RN ships. Or is it an artistic choice for a better looking ship model. Just one of those things you think about when bored at work and not thinking about women or beer, or the next model to build. Usually in that order.

Tom

Interesting observation Tom.

I'm not really sure. When I look at pics of KGV class early 40's it's debatable as to whether or not the decks were AP507A (dark grey) or not. Many of the smaller classes of RN vessels had limited teak decks so it's not as noticeable.

Personally I like the look of the teak, just to break up the monotone grey, but it would be debatable as to whether or not it's 100% accurate.

At the end of the day it's your fleet mate, and your choice.

Tom, it appears that most if not all RN ships with teak decks left the teak it's natural colour even when re-painted in a camo / dazzle / disruption scheme.

An example being HMS QE which got re-painted several times but maintained a teak deck through out. Even those ships with steel decks do not appear to have had the decks re-painted when the rest of the camo was redone every time, although there are exceptions especially with a change of theater.

So when it comes to RN ships with wood decks the best thing to do unless you know for sure is to leave it natural teak.

Thanks for the replys gents. I was more curious as to why they would leave it that way with the threat from the air. I would think that they would do everything possible to make the ships harder to hit. Especially in the Med. I'll build them as I like for sure. May be its one of those war time mysteries like why RAF bombers had no belly guns.

One thing you cannot hide from the air, Tom, is a ship's wake. So paint the deck with a camo scheme or not, and chances are you'll still be seen

Russ very true but if you can disguise length or width you might be able to throw off the pilots aim it only takes a few degrees for a hit to become a miss. Isn't that the whole idea behind naval cammo any way. You can't hide the ship but you can make it harder to hit by confusing range or direction. Just a mind exercise. The US Navy did paint the decks, maybe they got tired of holy stoning them

Thanks Russ,

Good to get her done, I think 10 months is the longest build, uninterrupted that I have succeeded in completing, and the most complex.

That said I am pleased with the end result.

Si, I was going back and looking again at your Duke of York... absolutely stunning job! I have the old Tamiya Prince of Wales lurking in my closet stash - your build makes me want to give it a go!

Greetings!

So many great builds either ongoing or completed! This has been a fun Campaign to follow.

BUT...maybe it's time to stop following and join the fray?

Would the USS Maine or USS Texas ("Old Hoodoo") fit in with this campaign? They were both considered 2nd Class Battleships.

What say you?

Thank you,

Daniel

Hi Si,

joining in here a little late, was away the last couple of days and almost missed your commissioning of the DoY

I can only second all the superlatives already mentioned, this turns out a real great DoY!! Congratulations on your commissioning , it was really great following you over the last eleven months building this fantastic ship, I learned a lot!

Cheers

Tough act to follow Si!! But it will be fun just getting into the game!! Not too much in the way of updates...I added a bunch of stuff to my personal thread on this but its good to pop up a couple of progress reports from time to time

Soldered up some of the cabins on the bridge...

Flag deck work still continues but there is a light at the end of that tunnel...

I explained a bit more of what the styrene shims are for at the front in my blog...basically I needed some support for the windshield/splinter shield around the conning tower.

A quick dry fit

No worries...nothing is actually aligned correctly here but as thing progress they should line up just fine I think!!

Cheers fellas!!

Howdy Y'all
I finally have a chance to post a photo of my build. Battleship Ise in 1/700 scale, SOB, nothing fancy. I'm a kitchen table builder so I'm not going to do any PE. I might use some brass barrels but it depends if I have time before the deadline. The subassemblies are almost completed and I have to figure out how to proceed with painting; probably will take the subassemblies with a spot of glue.

Take care,

Looks good Don,

Another trip down modelmaking memory line. Do like seeing a good clean out of the box build.

Greetings!

A few weeks have gone by since I posted asking if the USS Maine or USS Texas (Old Hoodoo), both 2nd-Class Battleships, would qualify for this Campaign.

Anyone have an idea?

Thanks!

Sorry that your question was missed Daniel

Hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes by answering this.

I reckon go with the Texas as that was a BB. Maine on the other hand was considered an armoured cruiser and may qualify for Si's cruiser campaign coming up later this year. Hope this helps. Look forward to seeing you kick off your build!

Don, your Ise's looking good

Hi Russell!

Thanks for the reply. No problem if my request was over-looked. It happens.

I was leaning towards the Texas for the exact reason you posted.

In "The American Steel Navy," John Alden writes, "Originally designated Armored Cruiser No. 1, she [Maine] was reclassified a second-class battleship during construction, but in fact did not really fit into either category." (pg. 32)

Both ships were rather odd! Alden wrote that USS Texas was considered an "isolated type" second-class battleship.

I love the weird, quirky look of the fledgling American Steel Navy! I have a few other ISW/Commander's 1/350 models from this era.

Best wishes,

Daniel

No worries Daniel

It will be really interesting see Texas built from this often overlooked error. Indeed it was a time of such rapid change in battleship technology that vessels were often obsolete before even being launched, often resulting in single ship classes, and relegation to 2nd class status as the next 'leap' was made and new ships laid down.

There was as you mentioned a lot of ships that never really 'fit' any classification as navies struggled to keep up with the changing times.

I like the Texas though and am glad you have chosen her to build!

Hi Daniel,

The Maine would certainly qualify for the cruiser campaign, would be great to have you on board,

Hi Russell and Simon!

I've been struggling for a few days trying to figure out this kit! It looks like I'll have to scratch build replacements for most of the pieces. I'm also having to come up with my own "instructions", as there are only 3 exploded diagrams, all of them mislabeled, and numerous parts unaccounted for.

I'll try to get a pic posted later today of the kit, instructions, and, of course, current date.

Simon, I hope you don't mind, but since I have a Hobby Boss Pola that's been torturing me for quite some time, I'm going to join your Cruisers Campaign with her instead of USS Maine. She's started, but I still have about 90% of the headache and heartache that is this infamous dog of a kit left to complete!

WHY do I take on such poor kits???

Hi Daniel,

Be my guest, there is no commitment to build what you plans are now for the campaign, Please feel free to change your mind as much as you wish.

You all have re-inspired me to take on a battleship!

I had posted the start of my campaign entry on the old battleship campaign page at http://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/211162&ord=&page=2 back on November 7, 2013:

Ok, I'm in! I have a 1976-issue Yamato from MPC that has been in the stash for far too long...

I've never done one of these campaigns before... What are the rules? Can I start now?

_______________________________________________________

I intended to start work soon after that, but never got going. I’m back in!

I still have the old MPC kit, but I’ll actually be building the Revell Germany reissue (yet another repop of that same old 1970s Casadio molding):

Ok, this time for real!
