Hi Michael, I think I built the IOWA version of that kit in my teens-I'll see if I can get a picture up for you

That'd be cool to see. I've done dozens of searches for built versions of the kit to see what people have done.

I got 1/500 PE sets from Toms Modelworks for the catapults and cranes so I hope they'll scale well enough to the kit.

Hi Russell,

Good thought Mate, too many waterline builds didn't think of that.

You are a sucker for punishment at the moment mate! If and when I ever get to living in a house rather than the caravan hopefully I will have enough time to build something for this campaign.

Get better soon ole fella!

Cheers

Hi Michael

well maybe not cool but interesting. I built Revell's New jersey version of your kit when i was about 14-15 so it's a good example of what not to do I think this was my first experiment with spraying a ship!

HI

As a recent heart surgery patient myself (aortic valve and subsequent pacemaker implant) I wish you (Bruce) the best.

I will join this campaign by starting and attempting to finish: HMS WARSPITE. Kit will be by Academy with barrels by Master and deck by someone ....

I did pick up the high end version but that etch scared me off. Not that etch scares me but my less than steady hands and already short attention span made building that kit somewhat daunting .. LOL

Howdy Y'all
I will be giving this old kit a try. I bought it a number of years ago at a club swap meet and I think all the parts are there. Any suggestions, tips, or critiques are always welcome.
Take care,
Don "Lakota"

Well...
At the risk of being embarrassed here is what I will build for the campaign, soft on detail but will try and make it look good.

Cheers Rob.

P.S. The campaign title is missing an i.

We started somwhere. Mine was an Aurora 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea' Seview kit the my mother mostly built for me.

I'm anxious for the Eduards PE set and to try assembling the catapults.

----- They arrived today!

Wow, they are intimidatingly small!

The deck is prepared for fitting by removing all the "holes"

And fitted to the hull.

Not a bad fit, a few small pieces came away during the fitting, but I got most of them back in the end.

because of the complexity of the Pontos set, I have decided to stat at the from with th deck detail & work aft. Starting with the cableways, the resin sections were fitted to the etch whilst still on the fret, this does make handling easier,

sprayed dark gey and fitted.

Six moulded on mooring bits that have been removed from the fo'c's'le have replacements provided in the upgrade set, turned brass bits with etched baseplates. The six bits attached to their baseplates, again still on the fret.

sprayed, along with the control valve spindles for the capstans.

Anchor cables next, First one under way.

All three cables completed. Bits have been fitted as well, as well as the valve spindles.

More soon.

Well I might have run into my first problem you know in Tamiya kits you usually get two sets of instructions one in Japanese and one in English well I do not normally take any notice of this and just build by numbers but on this occasion I,am trying to read through first and then have suddenly realized that I only have the Japanese instructions so Simon or Russell can you let me know what Tamiya paints I need to be using for the main grey colour when I have read through the thread again Simon you said you used TS 66 is that the can version number hope you can help please

Hi Keith.

A couple of questions: you are building KGV as of 1945 fit? Also, will you be using Tamiya paints?

The POW instructions may not list the Tamiya colours required for the 1945 fit but I will check. Usually I use WEM Colourcoats as they come in exact RN colours. I will check my references tonight and let you know the RN colours if you like.

Any thoughts on this Si?

Yes Russell I,am building the 1945 fit KGV and was going to use Tamiya acrylics I have read what I can from the instruction sheet and it lists the colours but was wondering if there are any alternatives that might be better may have to send away for some of the WEM paints are they better for painting the PE would you say
Thanks for the help with this better to ask than make a right pigs ear of it

You know you got a year to finish, right Simon? You'r going to be done before summer this year even begins at this rate!

But seriously, it's lookinfg nice.

And do you use a PE bending tool? I've been considering getting one with the PE I have for my build. The catapults and and cranes have me concerned about getting a sharp fold for them.

Hi Keith

Tamiya paints are acrylic based and WEM are enamel, so I guess it comes down to your preferred medium. Personally I've always used enamels, but a lot of people prefer acrylics-there's no right or wrong.

I Like WEM colourcoats because a) they're enamel and, b) they provide the exact colours of the RN, USN and DKM.

For 1945 you will need to paint KGV as follows...

Admiralty Standard Camouflage Scheme A:
Vertical Surfaces—G.45 Warm Light Grey (WEM RN 14)
Blue panel on hull—B.20 Medium Blue-Grey (WEM RN 16)
Steel decks & walkways—G.10 Dark Grey (WEM RN 23)
Wood decks—Teak
Boot-topping & Funnel Caps—Black
Underwater hull—RN Antifouling Red (WEM RN 19)

I've listed the WEM colours for you, but I'm not sure what the Tamiya equivalents are, but I'm sure someone out there can help on this?

Just butting in here

yes, slow down Si, you're making us look like slow coaches

Michael, yep, I always use a "hold n fold", to bend PE

Hi Michael,

reckon I you guys will be overtaking me soon, haven't got to the really small and tricky stuff yet.

Hi Russell,

Just looks like I have done a lot, because I have used some big bits.

Looking forward to your builds.

Hello gents, I'm primarily an armor modeler but have quite a few BBs in the stash. I wanted to branch out into ships and figured this would be a good way to break the ice. I'll post which ship shortly. I have several in 1/700 and 1/350. I will not build the KGV since everyone else is. Leaning toward Trump Dreadnought or Academy Warspite.

Bruce get well soon.
