Hi Dave,

For annealing, If I am brave, o it is a big bit I use the small burner on the cooker, but you have to keep it moving, small stuff I use a tealight, one of those little candles that go inside nightlights and the such, I prefer them to regular candles, they seem to burn a bit hotter and are more stable.

Hi Joseph,

I find Pontos etch very good, it is certainly as good as WEM or Gold medal, the brass is slightly softer, but the folds are very precise and fold quite easily. They do like a lot of small stuff, so you do need a lot of patience, and for what you get they are good value.

Nice work. Do you use commercial bending too? If so, which one, just out of curiosity.

I had just purchased what I guess would be considered a 'beginners' tool from Paragafix.

Michael, I use four pe tools, an expensive Etch mate 3C which I rarely use (go figure), an RB Flip R5 (useful), an old Atlantic No.1 (use most of the time and the cheapest!) and a Mission models multi tool small, perfect for those floater net baskets on US ships and other things that need to be rounded.

I keep forgetting I'm in this campaign however I have followed along and been watching these great builds. I now need to get a detail set or two then I can dive in, I do however need to clear the bench of minnows (subs, DD's and DE's) first.

What I have waiting is as follows with detail sets indicated:
HMS Dreadnought 1907 - no detail set
HMS KG V, to be built as Anson or Howe, ref needed and no detail sets
RM Roma - DX detail set including deck and barrels
KM Scharnhorst - Brass barrels
IJN Kongo - no detail set
Admiral Ushakov ex-Kirov (Battlecrusier - does this count?) - PE set

I feel that a HMS Warspite and USS North Carolina will both be sailing into my stash sometime soon.

Can I have your votes please on what you want me to tackle from the above list.

While I clear the bench it will give me time to get any detail/wood deck sets I need.

How about the Roma, she was a beautiful ship and you have most of what you need already. I try to get into campaigns that have me use stuff in my stash. I want to use up what I have. I don't have any trouble buying new kits

Thanks Tom, that's 1 vote for Kongo and 1 for Roma. The Kongo has been in the stash for some years so deserves to be built but I like them all and have a passion for the Kirov (if it's allowed). I have no trouble getting the sets needed for any of the others except the KG V as I want to build it as either Anson or Howe in 1945 so need some ref material first.

Sascha is the Kirov (Battlecruiser) allowed?

so her she is with the wooden deck added. Definitely learned that prior planning is critical to adding a wooden deck. Had to remove som PE parts to get the deck to lay down..

I darkened the deck with a wash of flat black and a little brown. This was to replicate the deck darkened by ash from the boilers. Apparently this was directed to prevent night attacks.

My wife is out of town this weekend so I will definitely have plenty of updates come sunday.

Any and all comments are welcome.

welcome Aboard Greg.

Littorio I will have to say No to the Kirov I cannot find anywhere that I have looked where it was ever classified as a Battleship sorry. however the Roma sounds like an interesting Build.

I have 3 choices and figured I would see what you guys thought.
1. Tamiya 1/350 USS Missouri
2. Fujimi 1/350 IJN Fuso
3. Trumpy 1/350 HMS Hood
all w/ Flyhawk PE sets

I always have a hard time deciding what to build next.
Preferences?

I'll finally be updating Roma this weekend. All the scuttles have been drilled out and covers have been added for the port side. More importantly, despite a nice blister on my hand from the hand drill, sanity prevailed! I will be adding the starboard scuttle covers tomorrow.

I was originally planning on a major overhaul of the stern portholes, but have decided against it. As much as I'd like to, it's going to require far too much effort and lead to other problems. The location and number of all the kits portholes and scuttles are problematic in comparison to the ship profiles. Fixing just those on the stern and not the entire hull seems rather pointless. I do not want to go down a path of no return. So, I will simply drill out the remaining portholes as is and start preparing to join the hull halves.

I'll also show preliminary pictures of the base and how the ship will be mounted. I've finally got my Roma mojo in full gear. I'll provide more detail in my separate build log I've got started for those interested in following.

Dave,

I think your Musashi deck came out great. Definitely adds a different look compared to an unwashed/unweathered original. Fantastic progress.

Thanks all for the comments. It was my first wooden deck and was a little difficult to put down.

Sascha it is a Hunter deck, reasonable price, all the important cut out were there, self adhesive and it was a single piece. It had some bubbling but I think that was more my fault for not planning ahead.

Greg, I have a Missouri that is half built so watching your progress would be beneficial but then again the FUSO does sound interesting.

Joseph cant wait to see your Roma

Going to put a filter, pin wash, and dry brush the Musashi today. Once that is done I will begin permanently adding the major sub assemblies. Ill have more updates tomorrow.

Cant wait to see everyone progress.

Thanks again for all ya'lls advice and comments. Cant tell you how much I have learned during this campaign.

thanks

hey all,

well with my wife out of town today has been pretty productive. I applied an oil wash, pin wash, and dry brushed the big monster. Here are the results:

I glued all of the major sub assemblies except the front main guns. All the secondary armament and AA guns are now down permanently.

This is the first time I had down a filter and I must say I am happy with the result. I plan on doing a couple more layers of burnt umber to highlight a little more rust.

I still have a long way to go before completion but wanted to share my progress.

I plan on finalizing it into an ocean scene, working on the base for that.

Hope all is going well.

Looking good Dave,

A bit more on the rust and highlights will just lift the darker washes.

Hi Everyone!

All the builds look fantastic!

Si, you're a true rocket man-very quick indeed!

Dave, the deck has come out brilliantly! The weather looks great too-ps don't forget there'll be a distinct change at the water line, where the ship sits in the water. There won't be any streaking below that point, more of gungy build up instead...

Luciano, my vote goes to the Roma, and Greg, it would be great to see the Fuso added to the campaign.

Joseph, looking forward to seeing those pics

I'm slowly chipping away at the KGV, Real life and work have been getting in the way of late, but progress is being made...

Si, I also am impressed with your speed. It's looking great, too. I can't wait to see what your work in the Battle of The Atlantic build. I'm getting my workspace set and I'll be doing my New Jersey for this Campaign alongside my Blyskawica.

Dave, the deck came out nice. Looking good.

Luciano, I also vote Roma. You don't see her often enough in a build. And thanks for the info on you PE tools.

And Greg, I also vote for the Fuso (admittedly, I favor IJN battlwagons because they have a more exotic look to me).

Luciano, sounds like another Roma build is on the horizon . I hope I can handle the pressure to not pooch mine in comparison . Can you confirm for me that the Mk.1 detail set has the eyebrows for the portholes? I think I saw what looked like some. The Flyhawk set does not.

Great progress by all.

My spouse and I took pictures tonight. I'm the modeller, she's the photographer. She gave me one of her older digital cameras, but I have yet to really learn how to use it. I just need to wait for her to upload the pictures to her computer so I can then post them.

I'm hoping to get the Mk.1 Design photo-etch soon so I can get going on the fun stuff. Between the two sets I should have everything covered. The hull still needs a lot of work, but I wanted to take a before and after picture to show what I removed from the stern before I continued.

Well the Fuso it is!! This will be my first IJN ship build. I got the Fuso because of the tall pagoda superstructure. I thought is was so unique. Well I had better get moving seeing that 3 months have already gone by. You guys have a huge head start.

Joseph as far as I can tell the Mk1 detail set does not include eyebrows, none are show in the instructions.

Ok with all the votes for the Roma it looks like that is what I'll be building, I've been holding off on the Roma as I feel my skills are not quite ready to do her justice. So once I start please all jump in if you see me doing anything wrong or can suggest a better method. It'll be a month before I start so bare with me.

Ok, finally some pictures. Trying to figure out the pixel size caused me some grief, but I think I have it down now.

Here are the scuttles drilled out with small styrene circles added to represent the covers. I used the smallest diameter circle from my punch set. Both sides are complete.

Next up is a closer view of the mounting brass pedestals.

Here's a better picture of how the ship profile will look on the base. You can see my new spray booth as well, which has enough room to accommodate the entire hull.

This deck piece had a molding error which left a gap. I glued some thin styrene underneath and filled the gap with more styrene shaped to fit. I used Tamiya putty to fill, but have to say I'm not really liking the result. I'm going to sand more away and use green putty or Mr Surfacer to clean this up.

Here's the port side of the stern with the portholes drilled out and some kit detail removed. The fasces and ship name have been sanded off, as well as an over scale strip that I haven't figured out what it is supposed to represent. I will add styrene later to match the ship plans.

Here's the original kit detail on the starboard side for comparison. My understanding if the fasces was removed from the Roma at some point. You can see the oversized strip that I'd like to replace.

It's a start and I'll try and improve the pictures and presentation as I go.

Joseph
