Hello everyone!
I'm in this campaign with the first model ship of my modeller life.
I'll try to build a Tamiya German Z class destroyer, obviously out of the box because i don't have any kind of experience with ships. I'll use only metal barrels for 15cm guns.

I chose vessel Z32, it operated in the Channel and was attacked by canadian and polish destroyers during a mission against bridgeheads in Normandy on June 9th,1944. It was beached near Brest and destroyed by Allied aircrafts

Thanks in advance for this adventure
Regards
Dario

Good luck with your project Dario,

You have picked a nice straight forward little kit, I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks Simon!
i modelled only 1/35 vehicles till now, so i decided to discover new aspects of this hobby.....48 and 72 scale vehicles, some aeroplanes and now a small scale ship.
They are new and interesting challenges for me

Welcome Dario,

!/72nd Aircraft are a long way from my usual subjects, and it is always good to do something different.

On with something different.

The props are sprayed yellow, the tips will be masked prior to shooting a coat of black.

Gun turrets & undercart sprayed with Citadel Chaos Black.

Turrets built, the shape of the turrets means a nasty join down the middle.

Completed turrets test fitted.

next masking all those transparencies.

more soon

19 Oct 1939 - HMS Achilles passes through the Straits of Magellan heading for the Falklands.

Thanks all for the earlier comments and apologies for my tardy response.

Progress is steady so far. I washed the hull and gave her a spray with Tamiya primer from a can and then went over it with some dockyard filler.

In the meantime I ordered some Master barrels. I was going to do this OOB but these are just much better than the resin parts. The best way to get the necessary 6" and 4" guns was to buy the HMS Warspite set. Using the 15" barrels may overgun this light cruiser so anybody after a set of main barrels let me know.

Sanded her back to smooth her off before another coat.

For the first time I have used the Model Master acrylics and they went on very well. Their 507 C is a nice version of the light gray.

Next bit of work is on the superstructure before we catch up Force G in a week's time or so. I hope Exeter and Cumberland aren't late!

cheers

Thanks Dario,

I have started the masking using the Eduard masks, this will hopefully make it a lot less painful

A couple of questions?

Is it possible to straighten warped resin? I have a bent gun deck.

Does anybody provide AM provider do a quad 0.50cal gun resin/etched kit. I thought WEM did one but I can't find such an item on their website.

cheers

Yes. Boil a pan of water and then immerse the resin piece in it for a few seconds (trial & error depending on the size of the piece & its thickness). The resin will soften and you can bend it back into shape. Then make sure it stays where you want to until cool or plunge into cold water.

Hi Michael,

The WEM quad 0.5" were the only ones I was aware of, seamaster make some barrels only. I had a scour through the site, but I could not see them either, pity I was going order some for my Repulse s I used the last two I had up on the Marne.

Thanks Bill. I had hoped it would be that easy. I will give it a try and see how we go.

Hi Simon,
Thanks for looking for me. I also went through the site but I wondered if I had just looked in the wrong place.
I will send a query this evening and see if they still stock this.

cheers

Hi, on the WEM page you can still find the quad .50"cals:

https://www.whiteensignmodels.com/p/WEM+1350+Royal+Navy+Vickers+Mk3+05+Quad+Machine+Gun+x4+PRO+3532/19227/#.VEkzs4dLlCZ

Same with the barrels, here is e.g. a German source:

http://www.dersockelshop.de/master-model/vickers-0.50in/62-12.7-mm-mark-iii-mg-rohre-20-/-1-350.html

I have no relations whatsoever with them, it's just one of my various sources and the first I could find those barrels...

Hope that helps, the WEM kit together with the Master barrels make nice guns

Great! Thanks very much Jan. I have already obtained the Master barrels for the resin piece in the kit. The WEM just looked better from the efforts I have seen in yours and other builds.

23 Oct 1939 - Arrived in Port Stanley and refuelled. Departed for the rendezvous with Exeter.

This kit is one that requires some commitment from the builder. The resin casting of most of the pieces is pretty average. There are very few pieces that don't require either filling/fixing or replacing. It's a challenge but one that I am hoping to deal with.

Off topic thought - It's a shame that while there are a few versions of Graf Spee around but almost nothing of the victors. An old 1/600 scale Airfix kit is all I have seen.

Anyway, I have built some v-struts and shafts to replace the originals

In the upside the photoetch is pretty good and extensive.
Here a Type 284 radar plus some Carley floats sourced from WEM

cheers

OK more work on the base some basic color added and some more of the main parts added to the ship

Sorry for the photo quality as having to use the flash or just the kitchen lighting as winter hours here now so not much daylight left by the time I get off work
