Yes, A/B and Cube of the Sea are the same thing. So, apart from a drydock or a building slipway scene, the only way to depict a sub in a diorama without tossing most of the kit away is such a method.

I'm registered and log in on behalf of my father. His name is Jorge and he is the avid modeler, but the English language doesn't work for him well so he is asking me frequently to answer and post topics in fora like this one. He is very interested on a link or any reference about the "cube-of-the sea" display format. I made a search on the web and the only thing that I've found is an old article from Fine Scale Modeller dating back to 1987!
I know that my father has not been building a/b waterline models for such a long time (he said he started about 2003 but he never heard or saw anything like that). So far he has built more than 20 ships using this type of representation plus about a dozen more that he is working on now......

Now my Fujimi 1:350 Ise has dropped anchor! Some pleasant surprises in the fine moldings: the pivoting catapults are molded so well, PE may not be necessary. TONS of light AA mounts. Excellent flag sheet. Clear aircraft of Paul floatplanes and even wheeled radial-engined Judys.

You gotta love those towering pagoda masts!

Now for the all-gun Hyuga and the Fuso/Yamashiro...

I just landed Pavla's 1/72 British X Craft. It's a review sample for IPMS/USA so I'll let y'all know how it goes.

I ordered Toms Japanese BB PE set from Great MOdels for $22. I think it will be all we need for the ISE kit Oh and I also have wooden deck for both the Ise and the Akagi coming. Hobby World Japan has them both back in stock at a reasonable price and if you do SAL shipping, it is cheaper then the fixed rates the US stores use. I think both sets shipped to me were around $150. I plan to take a break from ordering anything for a whiole. We have Scalefest coming at the end of the month. Sqadron has a 2 day Open House and they have all sorts of special sales gong on, so I'll see what shows up there. Good time to pick up old books and such.

Just got the 4 first editions of "Uboat in focus" - great ressource, very recomendable.

At Modelpalooza, I picked up the Yankee Modelworks resin 1/350 USS Baltimore. For those who have wondered what I would do outside of the IJN, here ya go.

I'm waiting for that one in plastic. Man it just dawned on me. The Littorio, Repulse, Graf Spee
....all that is left of my top 5 list is the Baltimore and a cage mast od course all the earlier lists that had the Akagi, Nagato, and Ise on it ar long gone.

The most recent arrivals have been Fujimi's 1/350 Shokaku and Loose Cannon's 1/700 Long Island.

Lordy, here it is the end of June and no one has posted for a month. Did ya'll just quit buying or just forgot to come on down and brag about it. Just won the 350 Repulse on ebay. After shipping to the house and all that, it still will be a dollar less than Great Models' kit so I guess i saved in the neighborhood of $10. You know me, NEVER PAY RETAIL! (I loved Fran the Nanny) Still waiting for my pre-rder Myoko which is due out end of July and whenever the Graf SPee hits.

I've gotten myself a Tamiya Musashi plus some PE, the Hasegawa Mutsu, Hasegawa Kagero and the Zvesda Borodino and Kniaz Suverov. It appeared the Zvesda kits are running out and the remakes are like 3 times as expensive. All in 1/350 scale.

Actually I bought 2 Musashis, I want to make it a 1941 model and I'll need some of the parts twice. And I don't trust my skills. I'm probably going to ruin the bridge the first time so it's good to have two of them.

I found that to be a lot simplier then expected. I just cut the centr island out and threw away everything else. Then got my plasticstruct or Evergreen sheet of "N" guage boxcar siding and cut it to deck size. That stuff was kind of flexible so you will need a bit of bracing under it. Piece one of the deck gives you a way to line the bridge section back up.Then there was some AA gun realignment. But you have the parts for that with the kit. I got my side turrets cast from the originals and used plasticstruct rod to re do the tubes, you may find metal replacements awvailable from Lionroar now. I had a ton of holes to fill in on the remaining 2 pieces of the deck as there were no banks on sngle barrel 20mm that were added later.

Well, I scored two books lately. "Dreadnought" by Robert K. Massie. It's a hardback edition that I got for $5.00. And I got "First Team" used for under $10.00. Both from Amazon.

I've read your feature, Steve. I'll take it as a guideline but have to consider my capabilities and equipment.

hasegawa IJN Destroyer Type KOH "KAGERO" Super detail kit (includes PE and other goodies).

Revell 1/72 S-100 with Flak38. Haven't decided whether to build the flak or standard version - I only have 4 brass 20mm barrels so the standard version may win!

Just got CMKs upgrade for the 1:72 type VIIc - nice resin parts for the bridge and the guns and some turned aluminium periscopes and a small crew in wetgear to boot. Nice.

Not really a ship, but I have no doubt, that he will have a strong influence on my modelling - just as he is allready running the show on a lot other areas ...

Jan, a cat is a very nice addition to the household and congrats! Mine have definitely influenced my modeling (see the cat hair under the Hinomaru incident in my HIryu build log ).


My additions to the collection give an idea of a bit of a shift in my naval focus...


First is the Amati 1/64 Lady Nelson, wood plank on bulkhead...




And then there's this monster. Amati 1/72 HMS Vanguard (plank on bulkhead), which I will be building as the HMS Bellerophon (was at the Battle of The Nile, Trafalgar, and carried Napoleon for a bit after he surrendred to Bellerophon's captain).



The thing with this kit is that it's so gigantic (46" long) that I have nowhere to put it in my current living state. It will have to wait until we either move, or we convert the back porch into another room...


No worries, I'm not ditching the IJN or anything. That's still my first love. Just shaking things up some.

Well Dade, I admire your ambitions. Me, I stay away from that sort of thing. I found you can buy some decent already built ones on ebay for about what it costs for a kit

My Repulse came in today and I was pleased with what I saw. Fritz loved the packing box as usual. Also expected in this week are the Vals and wooden deck for the Shokaku and the Toms photo etch for Japanese cruisers and 203 mm main gun tubes. Next week the Takao comes in and probably right behind it the Myoko. Have a pre-order in for the Graf Spee and the Trumpeter T-62 (yes I still build armor) So this is a big month. May have to get another Tom's set foir crusiers, just want to see what i get. Still need one for the Mogami I got a few months back.

Dade, when you build those, please take many pics and do a feature article of each... I have wanted to do a wood plank on bulkhead man of war for years, but have been affraid to. So please learn a lot, and then pass the knowledge on... I have learned a lot from your builds.
