Not really a ship, but I have no doubt, that he will have a strong influence on my modelling - just as he is allready running the show on a lot other areas ...

Atico - a "used" cat of 4 years - agressively social and very curious...

Looks very active!

Jan, a cat is a very nice addition to the household and congrats! Mine have definitely influenced my modeling (see the cat hair under the Hinomaru incident in my HIryu build log ).

My additions to the collection give an idea of a bit of a shift in my naval focus...

First is the Amati 1/64 Lady Nelson, wood plank on bulkhead...

And then there's this monster. Amati 1/72 HMS Vanguard (plank on bulkhead), which I will be building as the HMS Bellerophon (was at the Battle of The Nile, Trafalgar, and carried Napoleon for a bit after he surrendred to Bellerophon's captain).

The thing with this kit is that it's so gigantic (46" long) that I have nowhere to put it in my current living state. It will have to wait until we either move, or we convert the back porch into another room...

No worries, I'm not ditching the IJN or anything. That's still my first love. Just shaking things up some.

:

HI Dade!

You should love modeling fighting sail. For my part, I am working on ways to scratchbuild plastic hulls to depict certain ships from that era more accurately than trying to force-fit the few ship kits into those other vessels. The key will be in replicating the molded on wood grain effect.

My Repulse came in today and I was pleased with what I saw.

Hi Steve!

Did you get yours thru Free Time Hobbies?

--Karl

Won it on ebay just like I did the Takao. If you have patience and not an overwhelming desire to be the first on the block sometimes you can save a signiicant amount. Probably saved 20 to 30 dollars each

Hi Steve,
Actually, having seen some of those ebay pre-builds in person, I can tell you they're usually nowhere near as detailed as one of these kits built to a high standard (or even the standard I build my kits to ). Lots of things are generally simplified, such as the copper on the hull. On this kit, every one of those plates is an individual plate, mounted as on the real thing-- often times, the pre-builts will have the plates overscale or simplistic, or not on there at all (like a certain build of the Victory I've seen). Sometimes the planking is only single layer, while these are double. The pre-builds can look nice in photos on ebay, but get up close in real life and often times, things don't look so hot. With these kits, if they turn out lousy, I can only blame myself. Besides, nobody does the Bellerophon pre-built.

Hey Jorge,
I will be sure to make a build log. There are a couple of plank-on builds floating around the internet, and even one here at MSW that gets updated once in a while. But as with the Kongo, I want to share my experiences with my friends here.

Hi Karl,
With this kit, I was in luck, as it comes with the parts (castings; figureheads; armament; etc.) to make one of three: Vanguard, Elephant, or Bellerophon. This makes sense as the three were sisters of Slade's Arrogant Class and were launched within a year of each other. So thankfully, no tedious conversion work for this...

I do believe that within a couple years we may just see a revival of the plastic sailing ship model like the good old days of Heller (I have their 1/100 Victory). Just a hunch though...

I've taken a break from naval subjects for a while now, however I couldn't resist this. I've been after one of these kits for quite some time:

Dade:

I quite understand your perception. Considering the standard you build under, those mass produced wooden renderings as nice as they are would pale. I bought a couple of the small pieces and they are nice looking and suit me and the two I got are to scale with each other (whatever the scale was) But I for one would not want to tackle one of those kits. Mainly due to rigging. I built a Constituion once and was very proud of what I had accomplished until I realized I was moving and what was going to happen to it. I left it behind and I haven't done another since.

The postman has been very busy this week and delivered several orders I placed over the last months:

1/350 Zvesda Varyag cruiser from the Russian-Japanese war in the early 20th century
1/350 Eduard PE for the Musashi
1/350 Pit Road Ukuru type escorts Type A
1/350 Pit Road Ukuru type escorts Type B
1/350 MonoChrome Suzutsuki destroyer 1945

The Pit Road models are quite small, but appear to be nicely done at a first glance. The were quite expensive considering the size, but good things don't come for free.

The latest two floating items to wash up, courtesy of Squadron's monthly specials, are a couple of little gems. From Mirage Hobby a 1/400 scale Polish gunboat, the Mazur and from Airfix a 1/400 scale HNOMS St Albans four stacker. The Mazur should take about 10 minutes to build, I think it has about 40 parts.

Just got a new compresser, the old one was a industrial thing, noisy like a jet during warmup ... scared the sh.t out of everybody in the house when it started ... The new one is a silent thingie - just right for painting subs

Allso ordered 2 ICM Seehunds in 1:72 - be interesting to see how good they are.

The desire to try a wooden ship is what brought me back into the hobby (and to this board.) So I bought one. Yeah, the rigging is seems like a major undertaking and all that, but the thing that got me was... well, I guess I was expecting it to be like my plastic modelling days. "Part 54 goes here, attach part 32 here...." No way. It's "heres a scale drawing of the ship, and here's some wood, now go figure it out." It's like scratchbuilding execept they give you the materials you'll need. Or most of them.

On the other hand it's gotta be a major learning experience. You'll know exactly how the real thing was done. So major respect for the people who do that stuff, and if one of you does it PLEASE share, because I may well just buy the same kit and follow along doing exactly what you do, because that's the only way I'LL ever figure it out and have one of those sitting on MY shelf

In the meantime I'm just waiting for my 1/700 Zuiho to arrive. That's intimidating enough for my taste at this point. Gonna be my first foray into photoetch.

Waiting for me at my office door onboard the Midway this morning was my Aoshima 1:350 Nagara!

The molding is of the same quality as their earlier entries in the Ironclad line, and although the hull halves are full-hull, there is a channel on the inside that runs along the waterline, so scoring and removing the underwater hull should be a snap. The deck fittings (vents and cable reels, etc) are separate parts, and no molded anchor chains--they provided miniature chain!

The instruction booklet is comprehensive and well laid out and we get the now-customary 1:350 color poster. A curious bit for me is the inclusion of clear inserts for bridge windows.

An excellent subject for 1:350 treatment, the Nagara makes me yearn for contemporary ships like an Omaha or Java. Now, i just need to get a Yukikaze and its off to get the Akagi started!

Hooray for Pit Road in producing an IJN destroyer in 1:350 that isn't an Akizuki or Kagero! My Yugumo arrived today and it looks sweet. Now it's on to the Battle of Samar scene.

Oooooh that launch looks nice--I've found a way to do something with that Lindberg I-53 but it requires something like that launch to complete the scene.

Yesterday at Gator/Con in Lafayette, LA, I picked up the 1/700 Iron Shipwright kit of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. I was stoked!

I also got Trumpeter's 1/700 Jeremiah O'Brien and Tamiya's 1/700 Chokai.

A couple of purchases at the last 2 shows I attended. At IPMS Lincoln/Newark last month I, being a sucker for nice box art and colourful Japanese subjects bought the Hasegawa 1/350 Soya ice-breaker. This is the boxing with the 1/35 explorer and dogs in white metal

Then this weekend at the UK Nationals I got a Trumpeter 1/350 DDG-173 Kongo plus a White Ensign etched set (generic Arleigh Burke)

After two and a half months my first Monochrome kit arrived: the 1:350 destroyer Akizuki.

The moldings are crisp and the the parts are plentiful. The hull is a single piece which makes it very sturdy. I would rate it on a par with today's Hasegawa ships.
