I read somewhere that the rate of fire would be 15-18 shots per minute - with 2 barrels that would make about 30 shots in some sort of transit from the magazines in the hull, trough the chutes, in the fuse setter and finally in the breach - and deposing the empty shell - must have been very busy and demanding a quite large crew....

Hi

I was watching video about the wreck of Bismarck and I found an emblem on the left side of bridge (or conning tower ? my english is not very good). Do you have any ideas what is this ?

Hi Wojtek,
is this looking at the starboard side of the forward artillery post? According to drawings there was nothing welded to the side there. Could it be shell damage suffered during the final engagement? The deck behind the artillery post looks badly beaten up.
Cheers,
Julian

I am not sure if this is an emblem. First thought for me was that something had been welded to the bulkhead there or that it was battle damage. The red paint looks like rust to me but I could be wrong Wojtek. Lets see what onthers make of it,

Julian

There is very definitely a white or light grey square of paint there. Something seems vaguely familiar if it is an emblem.
Hope someone here can come up with an explaination, would be to good to pass up on if it is an emblem or heraldic device.
Nice one Wojtec,

These photos are about the best I have been able to pull of the film footage. There is obviously something painted on the starboard side of the forward artillery post. Just what it was may remain a mystery forever:

I haven't found any reference photo's of the wreck that show this part of the artillery post. Tantalisingly close but still just out of reach.................

Christmas eve update:
Progress made on superstructure. I have added the forward air recognition marking, watch out for the Trumpeter decals. They shattered on contact with water forcing me to cobble my own markings up. Stern air recognition marking a work in progress. I also added the smoke generator hatches on the stern of the Bismarck using my trusty punch and die set:

Having finished my review of the LionRoar PE set for Tamiya's new Yamato and having put in some work on the Bismarck and having started preparations on my Boxing day turkey I think I deserve a glass or two of wine
A very merry Christmas to all fellow builders here at Model Shipwrights. Don't over eat and if you do get inebriated don't do a crash and burn on or in the Christmas tree but on the carpet strip next to it

Hi Daniel,
The "red dots" are very prominent on a lot of photos of the Bismarck, ( although I am not sure if they were really red, looks good on the "Polish paper Bismarck" though). I think they mark the dead lights and ventilation shutters that had to be closed in case of fires, (not 100% sure of this though so anyone with a better idea please chip in).
The DVD by AK-interactive should be interesting, MiG does have a habit of making things look like they just completed a demolition derby, so care must be taken when using his weathering techniques.Don't know what has happened to Jan,last I heard from him was a photo of 4 rather excellent bottles of rum so maybe he is still recovering from Christmas ,
Cheers,
Julian
