Oh yes ... sure I can“t wait and finish other projects first - i have to begin building this monster .... weak is the man...

First observations, the fit between hull and deck is superb on my sample, so i am considering painting hull and deck apart so i get that sharp demarkation line where hull and deck meet.

I thought my building table was big ... but ...

I have added the stern and the axel entry points, in both cases the fit i ok, but putty and sanding is needed.

How bad it is will be disclosed with a coat of primer, I plan on using a red automotive primer from a rattle can to save on the expensive model paints - when i let my fingers run gently along the succulent hull ... arrhhnmm .. I can feel some unevenness - probably from the multipart mold and some sinkmarks/lines along the hulls inner bracing - again, the primer will reveal if its a real issue - I doubt that the real hull was smooth as well.

The capsized hull of the Tirpitz wasn“t that smooth either.

Cheers/Jan

Feel free to join in, better to have our combined observations in one tread instead of 2 separate treads.

But your lack of discipline is disturbing .. you really ought to finish that Borodino ... - look whos talking ...

I agree with you Jan..

Julian, if you don't finish the Borodino now you probably never will... Go on mate, you can do it... resist..

Will be watching with interest Jan. Mine is on its way but it is a bit earlier to do another Bismarck so soon after my last saga.

Cheers and good luck Jan,

Having primed the hull, I found some sink marks along the lines of the inner structure that needed a bit of attention, nothing real bad, its a fabulous casting, and i spent a lot more time, getting the hull of my Graf Spee to look good.

I have given a few passes on the areas of the hull without details - the paint layer is much easier to sand down, and as such acts as a filler covering large areas. Sanding down is done with fine paper on a wooden square so the sanding is strait and not conformed with the unevenness of the hull.

Getting ready for the real paint job - just have to work out what to do with the portholes and the steps on the hull side.... think they ought to be replaced with wire - not impossible in this scale..

It's tempting. I have to resist. "Finish the Borodino", try and resist, resist, resist.............. No, not working.
Sorry Warren
Thanks for the invitation Jan, will start up my Bismarck build this weekend.

Julian, I respect and understand your weakness fully - I am not a hoot better myself - I have a huge pile of semifinished kits and projects laying around - but I keep telling myself, that its just a hobby so I am not accountable to anybody, that helps ... somewhat

Much better methinks?

That looks much better Jan, the molded rungs are almost non existent. Are you considering adding weldlines to the hull? It is as smooth as a baby's bottom as delivered by Trumpeter.
Really no detailing at all.
Cheers,
Julian

Oh, by the way, did you get the add-on set yet? Mine still hasn't arrived.

No update set yet, but lots to do before needing it.

I don“t think I will ad welds, my references are not sufficient to do it right - but I might replace the raingutters on the forward portholes as the molded ones are rather weak.

I have been trying to find weld references and they are hard to find. There is a photo of the Bismarck in dock with what would appear to be a very prominent degaussing cable just under the waterline. I might add that. Also the sea-chests need some more detailing. I will first have to make some room on my work bench The Bismarck doesn't fit at the moment......

Just like Christmas today The mail just delivered "Celebration Day", the soundtrack and film of Led Zeppelin's O2 concert.
The stereo is now on "Atomic fusion" level while I troll through the Bismarck's box. Feel like a 56 year old "Yobbo"

Thanks Daniel, my guess would be keeping the cost on the mold down.

Congratulations Wojtek,
How on earth can you seal the box and wait until December though? Is this some sort of Polish Zen therapy? I tried to wait but I am a bad, weak and undisciplined person. I am having fun though despite all those bad characteristics.

Julian

I“m sure theres laws against cruelty like that

Better sense aside, I just had to put some colors on that hull - now I can try working on the sea chests and other hull openings without damaging the paintjob - how smart is that ....

Ahoy Jan
A mighty fine build so far my friend,I know you like a big kit your T-34 was superb.
I'm going to hold off on mine until the wood decks come out.
Did you get the update set with the metal barrels?,if not there are barrel sets on Ebay cheap.
I'll keep a weather eye on this build matey(I'm getting good at all this nautical lingo )
Is it me ,or there no instruction on the hand rail placement?
Keep them pics coming

Beautiful paint job Jan, I'd forget the sea chests. Did you drill out the horseshoe inlets and vents for the forward trim tanks on the bow sides? You might run a risk of damaging your paint job there. Looking great though, really beautiful.

Saturday 17th update: Starting up at more sedate pace I first had to make some space on my bench to fit the Bismarck.

First off I fit in the hull frames:

The bow insert is added, puttied and then filed. The fit isn't too bad:

I drilled out the vents for the forward trim tanks. There also is circular hatch or cover on the bow insert. I used my punch and die to make a new cover for this piece, after sanding t=it isn't as crisp as it should be:

Tomorrow work starts on the rungs on both sides of the stern. Jan mentioned this in his build: detail of the ladders on the model is almost non existent.

Cheers,
Julian
