I am sending in Dutch Ninja's to delay Jan's build I am a notoriously slow builder. Jan is enjoying his build and I am enjoying mine. I am not stepping into this sort of comparison I did stop off on the way home to get some more Evergreen rods and L-profiles.I squared off the coolwater inlets with Evergreen strips to make them nice and crisp.
Photo's to come, maybe you can advise me here Daniel: which putty do you use for your builds. At the moment I have Tamiya putty, Vallejo putty, a very handy but extremely dusty German putty and some two component putty. I rather seriously dislike them all
Cheers,
Julian

Jajaj I like " the Dutch Ninja's " jajaja
Really the friend Juan is very fast or he sent of trip your family without return!!! Master!!!!
Julian remembers to look for railings of plastic. They can solve one all the grids!!
Dont stop looking at the site that I sent great thing in 1/200!!
I use the putty Humbrol or Tamiya Light curing, but for the big things or rustic apply Squadron White
I wait my humble tips help you

I have never had a problem with the Tamiya White Putty... But if you want a little secret, the stuff they use to finish off walls, it is called skim coat here, is very useful for big areas as well. Sands very smooth and sands easily.

"Dutch Ninjas" - are these the guys armed with tulips ?? - I guess I´ll take my chance ...

Thanks guys - I have been looking at the deck for some time, and can´t really decided whether to give it another wash to bring out the planks a bit more, or stop now.

I´am also considering how to mount this beast - its so big it probably needs 4 stands or some sort of cradle.

Thanks Mark!

With the hull waiting to be prepared for the base and a treat of weathering, the deck washed and waiting for me to decide if it needs another turn - I have turned my attention to one of many subassemblies - the funnel.

Its pretty straightforward, but care is needed with the photoetch, as its very delicate and easily damaged during handling.

I am going to make the two containers for the searchlight be closed - there are other searchlights around the ship - and the closed covers looks kinda nice in a weird kind of way.

I have tried attaching the ladders either directly to the wall and a bit lifted by very small styrene strips - personally I like the lifted version better, as the scale more or less allows the detailing.

Be aware that cabinet J20 doesn't have a backing - which will be visible on the finished build. I fixed it with a piece of thin styrene.

Directly on the wall:

Hi Gentlemen,
Warren, thanks for the tip.
Jan, beter watch out, we have heat-seeking tulips in Holland
The beast is certainly going to need a very strong support
The searchlight platforms need entrance doors and a ladder to get to the door, I'll try and find a reference photo on Friday, ( just one more day at work ).
The ladders definitely meed a spacer to give a realistic effect.
Frank has dispatched my paints and the Trumpie add-on set so I should be back in the loop tomorrow.
cheers,
Julian

I have given the funnel piece a coat - still some touch ups to do, and I have to search for suitable doors for the closed searchlight platforms.

I have tried adding the cover on the forward railing which is seen on a number of photoes - not sure I´m going to do it elsewhere but it ads some variation.

Heres the pics - the searchlights are little gems, I masked the lens and painted the rest a silver from the outside before painting it gray. There´s direction on the foot, so be careful with assembly.

The friendly postman just came with the update set from trumpeter - overall it looks nice, I like the replacement styrene parts for the guns so you don't have to cut and drill and misalign the barrels ....

The propellers seems to be cast in white metal - and don't really look better than the styrene parts.

Cheers/Jan

Hi Jan that is one impressive Bissy you have there!

It looks already much more like a ship than my 1/200 Hachette Part works version which after nearly 5 years is still gathering dust!

Mines all wood and photo etch though which equates to a nightmare considering i started without any experience of either!

Il finish it one day!

Love the paintwork and progress Il be watching this one closely!

Beautiful work on the stack Jan, I like the canvas dodger you added. As you say the searchlights are beautifully rendered by Trumpeter.

My paint order and add-on set arrived from Germany yesterday.
I will be painting the Bismarck as she appeared in during phase 1 of operation Rheinübung in May 1941. That leaves the dark grey bow and stern, the false bow wave and the black and white camo stripes on the hull. The stripes on the superstructure have been painted out by then. The swastikas are still visible on the fore and aft positions albeit without the red banner background. Turret "Bruno"has the range finder housings painted medium grey and turret "Caesar"has the turret crown painted medium grey. The entire barrels of "Anton" and "Dora" are painted medium grey, "Bruno" and "Ceasar" have only the aft part of the barrels painted medium grey. I ordered Lifecolour Kriegsmarine colours for this build.
The barrels and anchors are great to have and as Jan mentioned they added new plastic breech parts so that you don't have to butcher the original parts and drill holes to get the metal barrels to fit.
The metal screws are just about identical to the plastic parts so their purpose beats me
All in all a very nice add-on set to have.
Cheers,
Julian

Thanks Julian, I can see where that last picture leads me - I will be looking for a more suitable material for the canvas, something thats looks a bit more smooth than the tissue paper I have used.

Observations on the funnel section - in basic its sound, but the aftermarket guys don't have to relax, theres plenty to correct/supply:

Lack of doors to the enclosed searchlight nests - both from the ladders aft, but also from the 2 platforms in front of the funnel - altogether 6 missing doors.

There is missing a platform on both sides leading from the ladder to the lower platform with the 2 cranes and a small ladder leading up to the platform.

Handholds/walkrails - 2 are supplied in the kit in etch for the topmost part of the funnel - but the lines molded on the funnel sides should also be etchparts for a better representation.

I am going to scratch the inner tubes for the funnel, there appears to be 5 major outlets that will be quite visible trough the rather big opening in the funnel.

Theres probably more ... so feel free to join in.

Cheers/Jan

I bought very thin sheets of lead foil for the dodgers on my Italeri 1/35 S-boat. Worked a treat. If I remember correctly from der Sockelshop.
Will you be adding the two control wheels to the searchlights? I think I have a PE set somewhere I can use.
This model is going to drive the after market boys bananas
They will be laughing hysterically all the way to the bank.
In the end it will all be a question of how much cash do you want to throw at the model and how far are you willing to go.
Trumpie's offering is a great base but is far from perfect.
Cheers,
Julian

I think i will buy some assorted etched wheels as the 20 mm is missing them also - another thin missing is a ladder running from the hangar roof to the platform under the searchlight "nest".

Oh the agony - maybe I should just throw out all my reference material and build it out of the box ...
