Thanks Dave, you are very kind.
On with the Duke, The 5.25" directors from the Pontos set, the kit provided parts are not correct. The parts straight out of the bag,

Cleaned up & assembled.

Work on the mounts for the Yhaggi aerials underway, one jusr assembled, and one fitted, each consists of 5 pieces of etch.

All four done.

First Yhaggi under assembly, the back plate has half etched fold lines to give it some shape,,

First one finished.

All four done.

Next the Ponmpoms, firstly the kit provided item.

The Pontos base under assembly, a total of 12 etched and one resin part in each. the kit part alongside for comparison.

The base completed.

Work on the mounting itself started.

Hit a bit of a wall, my pin vice is knocking on a bit, and will no longer grip a small enough drill bit to drill out the gun mounts, so off to the LHS on Saturday to get a new one.
More soon, Si

Here are some Fuso update pics

Here are the main guns and the casement guns replaced with brass barrels.

These are the #1 and #6 turrets w/PE added.

#3 turret with AA platforms

Painted hull w/ prop shafts and rudders.

Hull w deck and turret placed for test fitting

Casement guns installed. Now to finish the rest of the turrets!
David the Musashi looks great w/ the sea and the case. Great job!!! I wish my first ship turned out that well!

Thanks Dave,
Appreciate your comments.
Hi Greg,
Nice progress on the Fuso, I am getting tempted by the Japanese Battleships, especially the older ones in WW2 fit.

Si. There is an Aoshima Kongo available on EBay. 103 buy now option and 17 for shipping. I'm tempted but I just purchased the IJN Chokia Heavy Cruiser so I'm pushing my luck. I also just purchased the USS Alabama and USS North Carolina. My stash of ships is building quickly.
Greg thanks. The Fuso is looking great. I will be following your build closely

Thanks Si, this is my first Japanese build but I have several others in my stash. They are addictive once you start getting them.

Cheers Greg, seriously looking for something wearing the rising sun.
Having picked up a new pin vice, I can get on with the pompom. the mount drilled and the barrels fitted.

The ammunition boxes folded.

the frames for the boxes folded.

The mount assembled, a few bits need tidying up.

the mount test fitted on the base, a great improvement over the kit item.

only 5 more to do.

Si,
Your AA guns are looking phenomenal. I wish the Musashi Eduard PE kit had been as detailed as the Pontos kit you have but it wasn't to be, hopefully the Fly Hawk kit I purchased the IJN Maya will be. I keep learning more from you each post, please do continue.

i started my musashi a while back, and with the lack of options for PE, i went with a yamato PE (new tooling) set from flyhawk, in conjunction to the eduard set. For the most part, the fit of the pieces are good. some pieces, i may have had to do some minor alterations, but made it work. to the point that you think it would have been made for the kit.

Thanks Dave,
The Pontos instructions are very helpful, the etching that fits roubd the breech section is a great guide to drilling out for the barrels, and the half etched fold lines are very positive.

Great work all around. Simon those 2pdrs would drive me crazy, they look great.
I have been out of the work shop for a few weeks, I had shoulder surgey but "I'm getting better" MP Holy Grail.
I was painting my wood deck. I don't know whats worse prepping for real wood or painting. Anyway lots of touch ups will be needed.

Hi Tom,
Glad to hear you are on the mend.
The pom poms aren't as bad as they look, the etch is quite user friendly, and the rap arounf piece on the chasis of the mount makes drilling the barrels far less painful than it could be.
Good luck with your wood deck, I think they really are worth the effort. (better than I can plastic anyway)

Picked up the Top Drawings book on the Duke Yesterday,

Could have done with this at the start.
A couple of things wrong / missing. according to this,

3 motor boats & 1 cutter, instead of 2 & 2 and tubs for the 20mm on the boat deck.

and the colour of the deck.
Need to some more research now, and find out what is correct, and what if anything to do about it before I do any more.

Hi Si,
my advice is not to take these books too seriously. I doubt they're 100% accurate because few, if any, would be willing to pay the incredible fees the NMM charge for copies of the actual ship plans for RN vessels for the authors to re-produce and make money off them. (Hence why i suspect that so few RN vessels actually make it to market place in kit form).
As for the colour of the deck-I'd check what timeframe it applies to.
Russ.

Hi Russell
I am taking it with a pinch of salt. However, having looked a bit more closely at the photographs of the Duke undergoing refit in early 1943, in Raven & Roberts, the deck does look a bit dark, and I have yet to find a photograph showing her boat fit.
Am tempted to go with what I have, but am just doing a bit of extra digging to see what I can find.
To be honest will probably proceed as I am going, more interested to find out what is correct.

Hi Si
hope i'm not butting in here: checked my references and if you're aiming for the Duke as of March 1943 then according to Roger Chesneau's book "In March 1943 she emerged from refit with a new scheme of dark grey hull and horizontal surfaces and light grey superstructure. The colours are uncertain, but were probably AP507A and 507C, and it appears the dark grey paint was also applied to weatherdecks, although the wooden planking forward of the foremost breakwater seems to have been left in natural wood."
So far King George V is at this stage

No Mate of course you are not butting in.
I am looking at photos in Raven & Roberts of the ship coming out of refit, The entire foredeck looks unpainted, yet the quarterdeck looks a lot darker.
As I have got this far I am really tempted to leave the deck unpainted. Cheating I know, but there is a too big a risk in mucking up the project if I try painting the deck now.
Thanks for your comments though Russell,
Interesting stuff.

I know what you mean Si, sometimes we get to a point in the build that if we were to change things we'd risk the hard work we have already put in.
My motto mate, is, if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck then it must be a duck, and that's good enough for me

So many beautiful queens of the high seas.
I've decided to shift gears a bit, since I've hadn't gotten terrible deep in my New Jersey and instead go with a recent Ebay acquisition of a Glencoe Models USS Oregon.
I've had 'turn-of-the-century fever' in naval matters for a few months now and when this came up for a price I couldn't pass up, I jumped on it. Something about bathtubs with a plethora of canons I just love - maybe 'cuz it's a bit steampunk-ish looking and it appeals to the sci-fi geek in me.
She should be arriving today and I'll post at least the parts pic soon.
There's a great build blog here of this kit in the forum archives from 2008 that serves as a great reference for me.

Thanks Russell, My Thoughts Exactly.
I am going to live with what I have got. Non of the photographic evidence I can find is conclusive on the deck or the boats.
Planning to get back to this at the weekend.
Your build sounds interesting Michael.
