Hi Rodger,
Glad you have got the pictures sorted out.
Nice work on the pre shading / weathering, whichever you want to call it, looks effective.
Cheers.

Thanks for the kind words Simon.
Now I've a question for the group. I've decided to paint Emden in her pre-war rig. The instructions recommend Revell 36371 Light Grey RAL 7035. My color conversion app only give Humbrol 196 as a good match. Neither brand is available locally. Can anybody suggest a good replacement. I use Acrylics, mainly Vallejo and Tamiya though I'll use Model Master.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Rodger,
I don't have a chart that gives a match, but for Tamiya, you might try XF80, Royal Navy light grey. It certainly looks pretty close.
A short update meantime on the Scharnhorst.
The capstans painted.

On thing missing from both the kit and the WEM set is the anchor points for the securing chains for the anchor cables. These were made from offcuts of plastic strip painted grey and secured to the deck. Also the 3 larger pairs of mooring bits have been fitted.

And the capstans in position.

Family stuff taking up tomorrow, but we have a 3 day weekend next weekend so hope to make some progress then.
Cheers.

Hi all,
some great work here, sorry for being away for quite a while. Real life issues and nice weather outside...weak excuse, I know.

Yesterday I experienced some trouble with loading the site and posting, but after cleaning my computer it seemed to be a problem on my side. So just a quick update here before the office calls...a little more later.
Some propulsion added - the shining spots are not dry yet from touch ups, they disappeared meanwhile.

Rodger,
I have a little dated but extensive conversion chart, it gives no model air equivalent, but for the normal Vallejo No 989 (does that make any sense - I am not familiar with their nomenclature ?) and XF 14 for Tamiya with XF 66 as alternative. XF 66 seems way off to me, to dark, but XF 14 could work...
Cheers,
Jan

My entry for this campaign.

This is Artwox's first complete kit offering. Basically a replacement for the Zvezda Varyag using only their hull.

As I examined Artwox's instructions, I saw that they have a solid resin part for the bridge. I'm sure it can work out but I prefer a hollow bridge. I bought a photoetch set from Eduard. To furnish a hollow one. Also included in this picture is a Kagero reference for Varyag plus a base and lamp parts that I will use to display the assembled kit.

I have to confess that I got the "Varyag" bug after following Si/RedDuster's build thread on the subject. I hope I can do justice!

Joseph that looks like a real challenge which should build into a really interesting ship. The pre WW1 ships all have a very odd look while designers were trying to figure out what would work for the future.

Si,
your Scharnhorst looks great! And I know to well what you mean by little progress and loads of small parts...
Russ,
great to see your Prinz in here, and to see her progressing!! You are not the only one who is concerned about the campaign's deadline...first month is already passed...

Nice projects all, good to see this place coming alive!!
Some small progress on the Belfast - more work went into that than I thought - however, the twin Oerlikon issue resolved

More about these on my Belfast-Log.
Cheers,
Jan

Hi Jan,
You called me on that on Jan, there are quite a number of small pieces on that deck. Made some progress on some of the bigger pieces today, will post that later when I have downloaded the pictures.
Great job on the 20mm MkVs, I will be borrowing that next time I need to use some, If you don't mind of course.
Cheers.

Quiet Sunday allowed me a decent amount of progress.
The after bulkhead of the bridge structure has what I presume are boiler intakes going through it. The portholes are represented by raised circles.
One has been drilled out, which is an improvement.

In place with the internal trunking.

detailed bulkheads fitted to the midships section of the superstructure.

The after superstructure underway.

The deck of the bridge in place.

The three sections test fitted, all good.

Air recognition markings going down.

Paint going on the midships section.

detail going on the bridge.

Where the project is at now.

He looks a long way in, but there is a lot of detail work to do on a big ship, and I have barely started on that.
Cheers.

Heheheee, this is the truth of the salty side, Si

They suck you in with their easy build up of the hull, then sucker punch us with all that fiddly detail in the super structure

Hi Russ,
At least the big bits have gone together quite painlessly, I can think of a kit or two where even that causes

  .
Dragon's German light AA goes together well, but the trick I have learnt for that is leave the base / pedestal on the sprue and build the gun up on that.
Cheers.

Saw you had one or two issues with her mate, want some real fun, try the Type 45 destroyer from a certain UK company that has been around many a year, "innovative" parts breakdown, that just doesn't quite work.
Cheers.

Would that happen to be a "fixing of Air" company that would also happen to be my favourite for all things styrene??

If so, I have that one in the stash and am quite looking forward to it-I like the look of those ships, and the simplicity of the design!
With the low part count compared to the older battle wagons, it sounds like a fun challenge and one I'm up for! To the man-cave! Danananana!
Oh wait! hang on, gotta clear the bench first!

PS. If you've built one the type 45's would love to see the pics please! Or a build log?

Si,
Watching your Scharnhorst build with interest.
One thing - BEWARE of the misleading instructions - they are a minefield for the unwary.

Hi Russ, that is the one.
Get a couple of fresh tubes of filler ready when you start, and trim off most of the locating lugs on the structural bits of the hanger, masts etc.
Hi Dave,
Appreciate the warning, I have recently completed the Indy, CVL22, and those instructions were a real eye opener.
Cheers guys,
Si
