I just joined in this forum/web site, I am totally floored about the quality of the builds... I came back to the hobby after many MANY years, happen to be building the "old" Revell PT boat with my daughter but I do not belong in this league.. I may be a LCDR in medical corps US navy (landlubber though) but here Im just an E1.. Have to earn a stripe before I attempt to join a Group build... simple amazing work!

Hi James
Welcome to MSW and welcome back to modeling
I must correct you with the league/quality of your works - none of the enlisted members was born a perfect modeler
Each of us passed through, and still are, a learning process. Once we stop learning from others, or even with our own mistakes, we stop having fun with this hobby and start being a #&%#% of a guy, just anoying others on how good his models are
And you are in the right place: building a ship amongst other ship (PT-Boat in this particular case) builders!
I would like to suggest you joinning this Campaign, for starters!
If you have doubts, just post here and you'll see that you'll have at least a couple of answers to suit you... This campaign still has a lot of time to it's end, so there's no need to rush your project

Give it a thought - you're most welcome to!
Even if you don't, you're still Welcome

Glad you joinned,
Skipper

Ahoy, mate, I too give you a healthy welcome to Model Shipwrights!

As the Skipper just said, there really aren't any leagues here...just a bunch of salts who like to build shipmodels, so when you feel comfortable, jump in!

Cheers,
~Gunny

Thanks for the welcome! Ok, you can officially count me in then! The kit is the simple Revell 1:72 PT (85-0310).. I will build OOB, no additions... all I have done so far (with my daughter!) is prime the hull/deck. I have to figure out how to post pictures once I have something done. I wont try and replicate the exact configuration of the boat prior to its "accident", will concentrate on technique and finish. Thanks again, looking forward to this! Cheers, James

Working to finish the interior of the David today. The last thing I'll do is paint the iron areas. Does anyone have a suggestion for a cast iron color?

Tomorrow I hope to applying the wood strips to the hull. Here's a sample of the wood I'll be using to cover the resin.

More photos to follow today.

James I’m glad to see you joining in. As the others have said the quality of your work doesn’t mater. Just as long as you and your daughter have fun in the process.
But watch out these guys are addictive.

Kenny looks good but you didn’t do that on the TS did you?
Are you planing on giving it any stain or sealer?

Hello everyone,

Some nice boats being produced. I do like PT Boats with armament all over the place! I recently started on my entry it's the Revell 1/72 kit. Here is what I've done so far.

I went ahead and added a scratch built 37mm cannon to the bow and I also added a shield to the 20mm cannon as one picture of PT-117 shows it present. I also opened the windows and plan to scratch build the windshield and the cabin windows.

I am going to model it as PT-117. So far I have only located two pictures of it and they must be early in its service as they show factory armament of one 20mm and two twin .50. Reading more it was mentioned that 117 had a 37mm added and that the steel launch tubes were replaced by roll off racks but it did not say the year or month the changes were made. Both pictures show an overall monotone Grey but I suspect the ship probably had some field applied camo by the time it was destroyed by enemy aircraft during an air raid at Rendova in August of 1943. More to come soon.

Sincerely,
Brian

Hello Brian
Like the work your doing on the Pt117. You might want to give the Guy's at PT Boats Inc a try. There web address is www.ptboats.org
They were very helpful when I needed help on my PT174 build.
There a mixture of Veterens , Relatives & modellers.
They know there stuff.
keep up the good work

Ahoy mates!

Time for a photo update on the CSS David.

Getting started with the redwood veneer...

I used blue painter's tape to make my templates, here's the first few pieces on...

Here's several hours of cutting and sticking redwood strips...

I'm going to lightly sand the wood and then attach the redwood veneer to the upper part of the hull.

Comments welcome.

Reporting for duty, er, progress... I have no pics yet, cant figure it out (the camera part), so I gave my daughter the collateral duty of taking pics... this weekend I hope!

I already learned something from the amazing pics on this page... do the deck detailing BEFORE gluing to hull! Anyways, I had a tough time fitting the hull/deck (revell PT109 kit) and had to "dremel" off some of the lip (overlapping) portion of the pieces... now will prime with light grey (my usual primer)..

Couple questions... did a little bit of research about how to color the boat.. consensus seems to be: (a) Forest/Tropical Green, or Green Drab enamel or Dark Green for the deck/structure; (b) rusty red/reddish brown for the copperoyd anti-fouling "red"; (c) no black waterline, was thinking maybe an oily wash (if i can figure out how to do one!)

Also, is there anything horribly a-historical about the kit that I should avoid/change? The only one I found about was the large decal on the bow, that was not prsent on the boat.. Im just aiming for good technique, maybe a handful of additions...

thanks again, will try and post pics soon!

Ahoy Shipmates

I am back into my E-Boat again as promised. Update pictures are coming.

One small annoyance seemed to have misplaced one small point whilst finishing of the IJN Isuzu now I know why I hate trying to work on two things at once or putting down one thing and then coming back to it. I usually never lose parts oh well back to scratchbuilding a replacement.

Cheers

Ahoy Shipmates

As promised here are some update photos from yesterday of the E-Boat at early mock up stage.

Just to see how everything fits together and planning out the painting.

I am not real happy with the torpedo tubes they need a little more work. Nor am I real happy how the depth charge racks sit.

Cheers

Thanks Kenny.

For a circa 1975 kit I think over all its pretty good.

I know as akitset it has its issues but I have just made it pretty much OTTB.

I am keen to get some paint on her asap I am going as per the box top which will upset the purists but I reckon it will look pretty cool.

Cheers

Hey Sean!

Looking good to me, mate...come a looong way from the early hull issues that you battled with her, now, hasn't it? Keep up the good work!

Thanks mark.

I am close to wanting to lay some paint on my E-Boats hull.

I usually spray in Tamiya Acylics has anyone got suggestions on a colour from that paint range that would be a close match to the light grey used on the hull of the E-boats? Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers

Ahoy Shipmates

Got my paint yesterday at my model shop next to work. I found a paint which is a very pale grey after consulting the staff and I will let you know how it goes. It looks like a good match for the German naval light grey.

I have forgotten the brand of paint but its not Tamiya - my usual brand.

Not far from putting paint on her now.

Cheers
