Jim,
Thanks for your observation. The photos are dark, which I can take care of that. Part of the reason it looks the way it does is that at present, everything is glossed over highly. Therein is one of my problems, normally a small boat in rough water will be wet....period. But we are all used to seeing the upper works dry anyway, and there is my quandry. Although I know it should be wet, I'm tempted to utilize "Artistic license and show the upper deck dry. Obviously I still have several layers of water to work up yet. Plus the crew is in work. Even though this is a small model it will still take time to complete IF I'm going to accomplish a passible job on it...so we'll see.

So what say ye, Crew ? Wet or Dry ? Just wondering...................Bruce

Hi Bruce!

My two pence worth, definitely dry upper deck, and a somewhat wet lower hull...from the size of the wake that you have sculpted, this vessel is making haste in the water, and would most definitely have splash marks as well as a skim line of wetness on her lower hull...and if she's bouncing along in choppy water, their could even be a deck splash or two...definitely have a few options, my friend, looking great btw, and thanks for the update!

Cheers,
~Gunny

Ahoy Crew !
Another week has passed, and the MTB 89 itself is completed. Although it did not come out as nice as I had hoped, it was a learning experience. Thanks for all the input from all of you, it helps.

Now it is time to get her "launched into the Channel" and wind down this campaign for me. Any and all criticism is appreciated. thanks, Bruce

Hi Bruce

First of all, sorry for not having replied before, but I missed this post
I like the water, on the previous update, although I though the MTB should be forward a little but, which I realized that the boat was not glued in place!
I enjoyed it wet, though even if some crew on deck, these boats would get some spray, and remember, these were used in the English Channel and the weather there is.... wet

The last update, I liked the highlights and shadows you made, the rigging and the crew - considering the small size of this project, I think it's quite good!

Play around a little bit when attaching it to the base, and see if the shin is out of the water

Good job!!! And again, sorry for the late reply

Skip,
Thanks for the input. There is definitely no reason for an apology, I just appreciate any and all feedback. As modelers, we tend to get too close to our projects, and most are definitely their worst critics. By others giving their opinions, I get a different slant.

The project has been enjoyable, and a learning experience. Granted my camera perhaps gets TOO close on some of these shots. But the boat will be going into the "Channel" - and the water will be faired in and splashed up - so there is still a way to go yet. I'll show a final shot when completed if folks are interested - otherwise its on to the next project !!!!! (But we'll have to take a break from barnacles and do a winged thing ! )

At any rate, Thanks again for the feedback........................... Bruce

Ahoy Bruce!

MTB 68 is looking fine, mate!

I too like what you've done with shadows and highlights, my friend, overall, a beauty of a boat...once it's been put to sea, how about an "On Display" feature?

Gentlemen,
I thought it was about time to show the final results of my build for this campaign. Attached are several photos of the finished project. It has been an interesting exercise to complete this build, and I thank all that contributed with critiques and suggestions, it all helps.

For now, I'll take a little break, and build a winged subject. (Well....almost....a PBY is confused anyway - Boat or Plane ? ) Thanks again guys. Bruce

P.S. The "Hand shot" is for scale purposes - just to give an idea of the size of the build.
Any comments are very welcomed.

Ok, so it took me more than a month instead of a week to post more WIP pics

Opened the window and scratchbuilt the pane with clear cement and Future/Klear.. then realized, maybe should have painted the subassembly first!

In place, and masked for painting:

The muffler exhausts molded onto the hull where very "flat" I chiseled them out and will subsitute with wire (and yes, need to fix that blade gauge!)

Cabin in place, I debated whether to paint some instruments first, then place... opted to mask and glue in place, will detail after basecoat goes on:

Masked for antifouling red!

Mufflers... in terms of accuracy, they are supposed to be painted the color of the hull...but.. I wanted to try and make them look "metal" like, here is the result:

The base, decided to make it faux wood and detail the shield. Basecoat of MM enamel 'wood" :

Close up of shield:

I then Future-d the base, and used burnt sienna oils to simulate wood color/grain:

Looks Ok, I did couple bases for 1:700 subs that came out a tad better.

That is all for now, any comments and/or feedback regarding construction or accuracy are more than welcome! Cheers

James your PT boat looks a hell of a lot better than mine that has been sitting half built in the box for quite a while now.I do not think this is one of the better kits from revell to build but then again it is nearly my age

Ahoy James!

Progress, progress, progress...looking good, mate, keep up!! As far as the mufflers go, you are correct in your statement that they would be painted along with the hull scheme, but it's your build, my friend, and if you want to make them look rusted and crusted, it's your call!

But, if it's accuracy that you're after, then you may want to re-consider an overall rusted and crusted look for a more subtle "used" look as the image below shows....

But again, it's your build, your choice! Regardless, looking good, James, thanks for the update!

Cheers,
~Gunny

shaun, keith - thanks for the comments! yes, not one of the best/easiest of Revell kits, but I remember it fondly from my youth and its cheap! Also large enough to try some scratchbuilding & building techniques....

Gunny - thanks, and thanks for the pic! Yes, I do get over excited at times with the experimentation.. I will glue the mufflers back and painted them hull color, they should have a different texture at least with the "rust" undercolor

more progress pics to follow once I get the MSW Comm Build done for the month...

Here are the 2 other bases I painted "faux wood" (for couple 1:700 subs), burnt sienna and burnt umber... came out better than the PT base (I think).

I almost forgot I was signed up on this one I got started last night. 1/72 Airifx rescue launch. Boat #127 I believe. Has a nice red/white checker banner across the bow. Looks pretty cool in my eyes. So far so good. I'm thinking it will be done in a couple of weeks at the most pending paint and rigging it. No pics as yet. Will try and get some posted later today. Thanks, "Q"
