Gentlemen,
I've been in the lurk mode for a while now, as well as in and out of this campaign. I had previously joined, but due to a family medical problem was not sure I could finish. I'm very happy to report I managed to finish with 2 days to spare !

My entry will be a 1/700 conversion to the Tamiya Gato submarine. I tried it last year as a full hull...unfortunately the results were less than satisfactory. Soooo....with this campaign I decided to do a waterline version of the sub after getting the fleet snorkel and "Gunslinger" mod.

After the war, the USN had a bunch of Gato,Balao, and Tench class subs with no where to go. Once the "Cold War" fired up,they could not afford to build new boats to keep up,so they started a series of extremely interesting mods under the "Guppy" program. The first,(And cheapest) was the fleet snorkel addition with a new "Sail" (replacing the "Conning Tower") There were several versions.

My first subject will be the USS Torsk, with a Portsmouth sail, and the after gun left on (at that time - 1952). My model is finished and drying as we speak, so later tonight I will get some photos to the forum so you folks can left me know what you think.

And by the way, this campaign has had some really nice builds, congrats to all !

See you a little later................. Bruce

Gents,
If everything goes right, you should see several pics below on the USS Torsk as a Fleet Snorkel boat circa 1952. It was a fun project, and the first of several along the same lines. Comments ??? Thanks again,Mates...................Bruce

Great, Bruce!
I am glad to hear you' re better and I am very happy to have your contribution in the gallery in time!
I like your boat a lot!
On the constructive criticism side I should recommend to you to limit the white drybrushing to the water churned up by the hull and less on the water around the boat. Mind that whitecaps will only be see in winds stronger than force 6 or in shallow waters where waves are breaking. Anyway, your water has nice depth to it. I like the aproach. I especially like that your water isn't really intensly blue, but more blackish-blue and has a good sheen.

I hope to see more of your work here on MSW in future.

Cheers, mate!

Hi Guido!

I will try to take and post photos of my Akula tomorrow. I have a question, though, regarding the end of the campaign. I wanted to try to put her in an Emergency Blow diorama, but will not be able to finish the water by the deadline. Right now, my Akula is sitting in a temporary, basic, slapped-together water base. Do I need to finish up the diorama to complete the campaign?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, Daniel!
If the sub is ready, it's OK. I have granted Keith an extension for this build to come around, so If you post a pic of the ready sub by Sunday and add the finished seascape in the near future, we'll be cool!
Cheers,
Guido

Lap Man, that is one good looking sub, those under license Russian subs have got real character.

Bruce, that is a nicely executed sub in 1/700 and an interesting sort of half way house between a clean sail like the Oberon and the WWII conning tower.
I also would like to echo the comments regarding the colour and apparent depth and would love to know the approach you used.

Cheers

To All,
Thank you for the very kind comments, guys, I appreciate that.

Guido, obviously this site program is much smarter than I. about a year ago I suddenly could not load photos into my albums from my computer, but could load into the forum via photo-bucket. Now I can't seem to load into the campaign albums, any ideas ?

OK,Mates. Several of you asked about the water. I start with kitchen foil folded and unfolded to simulate a rough water surface. That is glued to a wood plaque, normally with mod podge. (A clear acrylic decoupage product), Next I normally use model master dark sea blue as a base color. Then I brush in a very watered down intermediate blue, followed by drybrushing with white. I then cover with another layer of mod podge. Drybrush the tops again, followed by a final coat of future to give the "Wet" look. Obviously that is a quick and dirty explanation. But if anyone needs more info, please feel free to ask.

Again, Thanks Mates ! ......................Bruce

congrats all on some great finishes~!

I was not able to finish mine the ARII Trafalgar class kit was so bad, I ended up spending a lot of time trimming, putty-ing and sanding.

Guido - if you extend a month, I will be able to finish for sure, even put them in water as originally intended. I enjoyed the builds in any case, and look forward to more group builds! ( and to actually finish some....

Ahoy all,
This extension is greatly appreciated, I could use a little more time.

So here she is so far all corrected and painted.

I need to install her guns, decals, rails and cables , oh and the props.
A couple of evenings will do it for me.

Hope you like ....

Cheers,
Joe

THANKS AGAIN FOR THE EXTENSION!
