Gentlemen-

It''s first of April and while I wait for Gunny to issue the official sticky campaign thread, I''d like to take to opportunity to thank you for signing up to my first campaign.

I hope it will be equally fun and educative for all of us. The success of the campaign is - as always - depending on your participation. So let us see your progress frequently and don''t be afraid to rant and rave (within the guidelines of gentlemanly manner of cause). As they say: It''s the mistakes we learn from the most.

With pleasure I see that a lot of new faces have joined our campaign, so here is our heartfelt Welcome. Those of you new to ship modelling, please feel free to ask your questions and ask for help with your project.

Now sharpen you knives and introduce you and your project with a short review.

Let the fun begin!

Cheers,
Guido

Gentlemen-

Welcome to the STAND BY TORPEDOES campaign!
I hope you will enjoy the show. The quality of the show is mostly depending on your contribution. So let us know about your progress frequently.

This will be my starting contribution:

The 1/700 IJN Torpedo Cruiser “OI” ( I have seen it spelled “Owi”, too)

23 months after being laid down the Kuma-Class Light Cruiser OI was commissioned to the IJN on 10th October 1920 intended for scout cruising duties.
At 500’ in length, 46’7” beam and draft of 4,8m she displaced 5200 metric tons. Her 4 Brown-Curtis geared steam turbines would excel her to a top speed of 36kn, or would take her 5000nm at 14kn. Her full complement was 450 officers and men.
The advent of the Type 93 Long Lance Torpedo in 1934 lead the IJN to devise new night battle tactics: The plan was to engage the enemy force (assumed enemy was the USN at the time) at night with cruisers and destroyers at long range with massive volleys of these very long range torpedoes. The remnants of the crippled enemy force were then to be mopped up by a following Japanese battle group on the next day.
In August 1941 OI was ordered to be converted to a Torpedo cruiser and receive 11 quadruple mounts. Modifications were finished by 30th of September of the same year, but only 10 mounts were available and installed.
Early in the war OI took on escort and screen services. During the Battle of Midway OI was part of the Aleutian Screening Force.
Already in August 1942 OI ended her career as a Torpedo Cruiser being converted to Fast Transport landing 4 of her 10 torpedo mounts.
After a busy life ferrying troops and supplies OI was sunk by torpedoes of USS Flasher on 19th July at the loss of 153 men.

The kit I am using for my project is the PitRoad 1/700 OI. It is my first PitRoad kit and the first Japanese subject within about 10 years. The kit quality is good with nice detail all over. There is a bit of flash to be found and the somewhat soft plastic shows a few sink marks on the bow on the lateral sponsons that are to carry the torpedo banks. On closer inspection you will find a couple moulding lines that will need cleaning up. The ship’s launches are sunk in and will require quite a bit of work. Otherwsie the parts are fine and fit seems good.
In total the kit comprises of 113 parts, plus decals.
The box shows a beautiful artwork, while the painting instructions are given on the back.
The instructions can be found on an A4 sheet. They are kept mostly in Japanese with some information translated to English.
I will be using a bag full of Lion Roar and Voyager PE and other sets I shall introduce by the time I will be using them.

I am aware that a great deal of things should be considered when building IJN ship models (for example the shades of grey used by various naval yards) and I have – frankly speaking – not the slightest idea. So I will probably asking a lot of questions hoping for your support.

Remember guys hat this campaign last “only” 6 months, so get to it!
I’ll jump right in!

Cheers,
Guido

I guess you can say that Oi is the ultimate torpedo platform!

Hello Guido,
I have a DKM Type XXIII U-Boat in 1/144th scale by Trumpeter for this campaign. My first sub I will have ever built.
No photo's to post yet, I have to do Carrier and a Battleship to do first, along with other models in the line first.
Good choice in your pick.
Cheers,
Bruce

Hey Mark
Question, can the torpedo be spar mount rather then self propelled?

Hello, Arthur!
A spar torpedo is clearly a "torpedo".
If your subject will conform to No. 1 of the campaign rules, your are good!

Guido

I have been looking forward to this campaign for a while and here is my build 1/35 Italieri ELCO 80 PT Boat. I had to spread all the parts on the Kitchen table to take this shot not enough room on my usual work bench in the garage. I only hope that the six month time period is enough for me to finnish as my other 1/35 project is only just complete after a year on and off

Dig it.

Also my first sub ever. Should be an experience.

Two questions - what color gray would be accurate for an IJN sub?
And what would a sub's wooden deck look like in service? I ask because I recently did a small Cleveland Class Destroyer for my friend's dad (who served on the Duluth CL-87 at the end of WWII) and his dad said the wooden deck was bleached near white.
(I have Model Master, Tamiya, and Polly Scale readily available at local shops)

Here;s what I have:

I've never done a campaign before so I'm keeping it simple
Mirage O.R.P. Orzel 1/400 but if I get it done quickly I might do another.
The campaign is a motivator to do one of my 20 odd sub kits!

Hi, Adam!
Nice to have you abord!

Nice subjects coming up, guys!

My project just fell into a big slump: I had all the hull and superstructures finished, when I applied my primer. It was a pretty old can, but until today it served me well and it is far from empty. Now, the primer has crinkeled up and makes the kit look as if made from elefant-butt. I tried removing the stuff, but it clogs up all the detail and won't come properly off. Usually removing it with oven spray works like a charm; this time it doesn't do the trick. I am majorly disapointed!
Especially since I had a realy good deal on this kit: It is simple, but beautiful and got it an incredible 5 Euro. That's most likely not going to happen some time soon again.
I am off t a show this weekend. I will ponder my options about, what I should do instead.

Cheers,
Guido

Dang Guido, thats just too bad, now you just have to do a sub instead

Still pondering my options - have to finish another project first. I have the following to choose from:

Fine molds 1:72 IJN type A
Trumpeter 1:144 Kilo - waterline as I allready have done a full hull ?
Airfix 1:72 Vosper (secondhand from Lübeck)
Revell 1:144 type XXI cut-away
A awfull lot of 1:700 stuff - maybe a bunker and harbourscene
SN 1:72 Type II A converted to waterline model (allready have a full hull model)

Cheers/Jan

Scott I really don´t know much about IJN stuff, but keep it relatively light because of the scale and the enviroment would be my suggestion.

I dont think the deck would be painted black like US subs, but look in the photofeatures and get some inspiration.

Hi Guido

If it is an acrylic primer try spraying Mr. Color Thiner and/or apply with a stiff brush... let it stay for a minute or so and scrub again with the brush. Repeat two or three times and wash it in cold water with dish washer.
It worked for me on the Shirase Icebreaker
I am off to a show too
Cheers and Good Luck

Guido, Let me offer my comisserations Very frustrating for you.

Arthur, Hunley...tooo cool I look forward to watching the build.

Now I will try to add the In the box photo's for the Mirage O.R.P. Orzel. 'scuse the poor quality, i've had to use my rubbish camera. The quality will be improved upon during the build.

Just for starters I assembled the stand and guess what? the parts don't fit and have needed minor modification. I just hope it isn't an omen of what is to come.

ORP Orzel, omen number 2
The lower hull colour is described as Humbrol 107 WWI purple. A long disscontinued colour. I'm going to use H73 wine, it looks very similar when I compared it with old colour charts courtesy of my LHS.

Unless of course there are better suggestions out there...

Hey.

Just wondering if an 4.7" O-class destroyer with a single quadruple launcher would qualify. I read in the previous thread that fleet destroyers are welcome but felt it best to ask due to only a single launcher.

Hi, Steve!
How about putting that single mount into the center of attention by swining it into firing position?

Thanks for the reply.

Would the feigned torpedo run on the Admiral Hipper in the battle of the barents sea. Along with Orwell, Obedient and Obdurate they managed to cause the Hipper to temporarily withdraw from combat. I know the other 3 O-class destroyers mentioned above were armed with 2x4 tube launchers but im not really keen on the beavertail sterns of the minelayers.

If you feel a feigned torpedo attack is not quite enough then im quite happy to leave it, as i will still build an O-class just not as part of the group build. My main reason for wanting to, it was the 'perfect storm' build that inspired me to look at scratch building. Anyway i'll leave it with you..

Hi, Steve!
Given that you display your O-Class class in a torpedo run (feign or real) you'll be welcome to participate!
