Starting the USS Skipjack build, then, I have selected tyre black as the main colour which will go on in three or so thinned coats.

I have used thin masking tape around the hull to apply a neat line to the second colour, rust red, and this time I have used the Revell variation. I have made sure the line is straight by using short strips, and lining this through by looking at the hull nose-on.

To copy the picture off the box, I have drawn a line around the hull with the pencil at an angle so that the hull peeps through the paper, and as shown.

I have glued on the fins - that about all the glue needed other than the screw which may not be required.

And on we go.............

ORP Orzel. Mirage 1/400

As suggested I drilled out the windows. I'm quite pleased with the result. So its now primed and mounted. I find mounting early on in the build gives me something to hold it by. Of course the rods are covered in tape.

The widows are level....honest. The subs wonky in the picture.

Meanwhile Schatton-Modellbau 1/72 G7a T1 torpedo
I'm quite excited by this build.
Wheel modifications

Flat bed mods

Where its heading

And another test shot

Any pointers and advice appreciated but I think its on the way to the original image

Yes Sir !!!
Adam,
Both builds are looking great! Those model railroad bits really
come in handy.
And the sub is looking great too, if you're planning in doing the windows, I
guess you know about simulating the glass with Microscale Kristal Klear or
Testors Windowmaker.......white glue will work very well too.
Have a great day!
Joe

Hi Joe
I bought Delux Materials 'Glue'n'glaze' at the North East Model show which the seller said is basically the same as other liquid glazes. I'll practice before I put it on the sub. In reference pictures the window surrounds look really dark so I was going to put a dark colour in the window holes. So for me on this build I am trying techniques I haven't used before, which I guess is what it's all about.

Cheers

I did do some work on this one this week, and my ideas are coming together as I wanted, and it's a dark coloured ship in a dark sea.

The difference is going to be the boat's matt, and weathered state against the gloss of the sea, the natural element.

I need to make up some numbers for the side of the conning tower so I've glossed the sides ready for application.

Hi Peter
Does the textured paper give the sea its initial roughness? The Skipjack is kinda cute at 1/700

ORP Orzel Mirage 1/400

I've just putting together the rudder and rear depth planes and I realise they are fairly 'representational' rather than accurate

I felt the attachment points would be quite weak so I drilled out wee holes and pinned as well as glued the parts.
I then added 0.8mm brass rod for the prop shafts as the plastic ones were aweful and the one below snapped when I started cutting it of the sprue. (this is another new technique for me)
I will add something for the diagonal support I think, otherwise now, after seeing the reference picture I know it is just wrong.
Anyway here are some more pictures.

I think I am about to do the main painting next after priming the rudder assembly

Cheers
Adam

Hi Guys,
Laid up here at home, I have been hanging around over at the Armorama side of thing. But I just ordered Revells, 1/72 scale, British Vosper MTB. Would this little guy qualify here? I haven't built a boat/ship model since grade school over 30 years ago. So it will be a straight OOB build with no AM parts.

Hi Sal!
Welcome to the show!
Indeed a Vosper MTB is right at the heart of this campaign!
Glad to have you aboard!

Flitting between a number of other builds, here are the latest pix of Skipjack.

I have used the powders to weather the hul from the intense black it was before. I also glossed the conning tower ready for the transfers - the white numerals - if I can find some in my box of extra parts.

I'm looking forward to the sea effects with this one as I believ eit will set it off perfectly.

My British Vosper MTB was shipped out yesterday. Im hopeful for it being here by tomorrow, if not definitely by Monday. Either way it will get started as soon as it arrives. I haven't built a boat/ship in over 30 years, so I'm a little excited about this 1.

All I have done is get two hulls of my 1/700 schnellboots cleaned up. Two more to go then on to the PTs and MTBs. It might be a photo finish for me.

Yes, Alan, at 700 scale the textured paper has the right look, an old Jim Baumann recommendation no less.

So, I found some decals in a Skywave US cruiser kit, and diced them up to read "585", so that went on last weekend. Then back to the sea effects with acrylic mixing white and Johnson's floor fluid. It's a question of building up the coats.

I also used US Navy open doors pe for the tower, and a couple of pe sailors to stand on the fin as per the box picture. I guess there must be some sort of saftey rope but I can't see that.

Nearly there................

Hi Guys,
Got started on the Vosper today. Not to happy with the way it was received. A big box with a bag of parts that were all broken off the spruces
Photobucket
Also not to happy with the parts. All parts had extra plastic on them and even the smallest parts had pin marks and 2 pieces broke while i was trying to clean them up. Guess you get what you pay for. Got the rear end put together
Photobucket
just primed it to so that will dry over night.
Now a question for you ship guys What color would the wood grain deck be, wood color or would it be painted gray? Hope to get more done tomorrow.

Nice little boat Peter, there might be a safetyline running into the tower, but nothing on the edge of the "wing" - the black hull came out nicely.

The friendly postman came by with Broncos new offering in 1:35 - the German midget sub "Seehund" - so far I am impressed with the quality and level of detals - beautiful weldseams and sharp and thin cast.

Unfortunately a few of the finer details hand suffered a bit, among others the eyelets on top of the hull, but nothing that cant be fixed or which was going to be replaced with wire anyway - A few pics to drool over:

Gentlemen!

I am glad to see hat the campaign is making good headway.

Peter- the sub and water’s looking really good. I am looking forward to see how you’ll make her “push” that water and how you are going to make that underwater hull disappear.

Jan- That indeed is enough to make one’s mouth water.

Ltb073- Great to see you’re getting into action with no excuses.
From what I can see in Squadron/Signal’s No. 13 “Vosper MTB” most of the boats either have medium grey decks with cortecene/limolium non-skid walkways or what seems to be dark grey 507A or similar. HTHH

As to my own progress I’ve been adding bits and pieces to my Mary Rose after a week of sitting idly.

I have started the base, too. My Mary Rose will be shown wave-jumping.
Probably I’ll be turning my attention to getting the base done quickly and continue to build up the upper-works as son as the hull will be set there safely.

Cheers,
Guido

Hey Guido!

That's got to be one of cleanest, most crisp renderings of an early destroyer I've ever seen. Truly a marvel to behold!

Having just bought Friedmans British Destroyers from the earliest days, i have to say your build is looking superb. The funnel cables look top notch as do many of the details. Looking forward to your wet base

Gentlemen-
Thank you for your kind words. It’s great kit and really hard to mess up!

Jan: I’d say a bit of both. I like the flat-bed car!

I am progressing adding small items and pushing the water display.
Here the first fitting tests. I think the hull needs to cut deeper into that first wave, don’t you think?

Tomorrow: Framework, basework, setting the hull… hopefully!

Cheers and good night!

Looks great, but as you say, it rides a bit too high - maybe let the wave under the bridge cover 1/3 of the gray hull ?

I think I might place the torpedoes on the flatbed and the boat on the ground beside it ... or the other way around to get some hight ... argggg... decisions
