Really nice work on the Walrus, you don't really appreciate it until you see it in scale and realise how small it is at 1/350.

Hi Russ,
I like the Walrus. Always difficult adding etch to planes in that scale. I would have one suggestion and that is remove the wheels. Catapult launched Walrus usually dispensed with them altogether, or if not they would certainly have been retracted.

I had a quick scan through the library, although most Walrus's sat on a cat wheels down seemed to be on a turntable catapult. I did find one or two in cross deck catapults on the launch cradle wheels down,
I reckon it's up to you mate.

a scan through RA Burts' battleships shows the same picture of a Walrus being hoisted aboard, wheels down. Also checked VE Tarrant's KGV class book along with an internet search and wheels up or down wasn't a hard n fast rule.
All the KGV class were equipped with Walrus as spotting planes before they were landed around 1943 and from what I can find out, I don't believe there was any protocol as to whether wheels should be up or down until a launch was imminent, at which point wheels definitely had to up!
There's a great video here here showing the launch of a Walrus. Some very brave men at around the 3 minute mark. Don't think that would wash in today's Occupation health and safety obsessed world
Anyway, back on topic, what made my decision in the end? I felt the plastic wheels supplied by Tamiya, while quite nice, didn't really match the finesse of the rest of the aircraft with the PE details, so it was off with the plastic wheels and on with the raised PE wheels!
Pic soon! Rebuilding the cranes at the moment using the Eduard PE set!

Hi Russ, Nice link to the launch video. Wouldn't want to a tall sailor in that job. Also noted the bullet hole through the centre of the right windscreen.

right then, time for a quick update...
First up the landing gear on the Walrus has been "retracted"
And the cranes have been re-built using the Eduard PE.
The Eduard PE seems to have a finesse that the WEM PE cranes lack, yet, the Eduard PE doesn't seem to have as much detail as the WEM cranes. Nonetheless I am happy with the results

Thanks Tim. I agree, re-work is tedious at best, and dangerous at worst. But in this case I think it was warranted, and you know, I'm really starting to appreciate Eduard's efforts on their PE for the KGV kits. In many instances they are the superior choice.
Speaking of re-work, currently deconstructing the molded on UP directors ready for Northstar replacements

The cranes and the Walrus are awaiting paint at the moment, whilst I rain down destruction on the superstructure to remove the molded on (toylike) UP directors for replacement with nice Northstar ones!

Small update before Christmas!
These are the MkIV pom pom directors fitted to the KGV in early 1941 as provided for by the kit
as you can see they look pretty toy like in comparison to the real thing
So I decided to remove them and replace them with some nice Northstar AM
after removing the cupola holding the upper director I had at it with a diameter 4.5 drill to get the bulk of the material out. Of course, I only held the drill bit with my fingers and twisting slowly to remove material
Here's the resulting cupola after removing material with the drill
and the bridge
I then had some diameter 5 rod made at work onto which I glued wet and dry sand paper
and the result: ready for paint with the hairy stick
Well that's it for now! No more updates before Christmas as the dockyard workers will be sent home for a few days to wrap presents for the kids
