Hi folks, herein lies the progress pictures of the ships boats! All finished and shipped

Now, this will be my last update on the King for a little while I'm afraid. The last few months have been a real slog to get the pom-poms and boats out, and I can't say I've enjoyed myself too much. But I promise I will come back and finish her eventually, so sit tight.

For the time being, I'm going to build a few wing-things, a car, and generally try to have fun again building models. No filler, no sanding, and NO PHOTO ETCH!

You'll see me over on the Aeroscale forum as I post a few of these builds up, but I'll still be here among the docks watching everyone's great builds.

After that, I'm gonna try to finish the Prinz Eugen for the cruiser campaign, so I hope you can all join me for that.

Thanks for being a part of the journey so far and sharing the highs and lows. As I said above, I promise I will come back and finish her-just not yet.


Yes it's true folks! The King is back! (on the workbench that is!)

As promised I have returned to complete this build!

In fact, I'm super excited to be back! It's hard to believe that the last update above was around 2.5 years ago and at the time I'd burnt out on Pom Poms and ship's boats!

In the time off I've been able to complete the Prinz, and a few other things, and now it's time to complete the King!

I have fond memories of this kit: From the superb Tamiya kit which was a joy to build and put together to the horror of The night of the PomPoms and its sequel Revenge of the boats But now, it's now time to finish the trilogy with the happy ending that will be The return of the King!

A big shout out to all you guys who've been following along and it's great to see you back as I bring this one to completion Thanks again for all your patience!

Now, where's my optivisor?

I too have a big Tamiya KGV in the stash, and your experiences here will be a valuable reference when I finally get around to taking it on. Glad to see you back in the saddle with KGV again!

Sorry folks for taking so long to post on this build. Progress is across several areas at once:

Searchlights and searchlight platform davits done with the Eduard upgrade PE

Work on the crane cab housings

And the lifting jibs. Now, the WEM instructions would have you just fold them up, but, there's a really unsightly gap running along the fold lines-I've tried to show this in this pic here.

So I decided to cut the parts at the fold line and then glue them together. Looks better?

And the 5.25"s on the go


Lot's of bits n pieces to do, and it's happening on all fronts.

PS. Can anyone recommend a good way to trim down the gun barrel parts to accept the barrels whilst keeping them square and true?

Good to see some progress Mate.

I will admit I have always been a bit of a , taped the twin barrel unit down on my cutting mat, across the barrels and the connecting bar, and carefully razor saw both barrels off with one cut.

no easy to describe without writing "War and Peace" but quite simple, and at least if the saw isn't quite vertical the cut ends are parallel.

I am sure someone else is likely to have a better method, but that has worked for me.

Hi Russ,

great to see some progress on your King!! Very nice work indeed -you're right up back to your old standards, mate!!

I'd have to check in my old PoW log how I removed the barrels from the 5.25" at the time, I think it was still on a different site then, but I should have it stored locally somewhere.

Getting those barrels in line with each other has me quaking in my boots. Especially the Quad turret 14" barrels!

I like Simon's idea. I hadn't thought about that and will use it in future. What I have done in the past if the holes are not dead straight is bend the small brass insert to realign the barrel. If all else fails, you can always elevate one or two of them.

Hi Russ!

So, back for a quick look around...still busy. Hope to get back to Hood next weekend and commenting MSW soon...however, I tried to find my ancient build log of the PoW (not on MSW, but on a German site that has gone down long since). But all is gone and I even deleted my work in progress pics. Ok, no big loss. Here is how I approached the quad 14"ers: I did not align them at all, but cut them into four individual pieces, that I could glue inside the turret in desired elevation. Something like Gator Glue or slow curing CA gives you ample time for individual alignment.

I apologize for the poor focus, but I hope they serve the purpose to give you the idea. I think this whole thing started as a mishap when I broke one of the guns while drilling and found out that the 'individual approach' actually was pretty handy
