Hey Hermon. Here is a favorite reference site of mine.
World War 2 in Color In the galleries, click on the US Navy gallery and go to the second page. There is a Wildcat on board the USS Wasp taken in 1942. That should help some.

Kenny,................ SWEET!
Thanks for the link. Wish I'd have done more research on this one before I started. That also is a good reference picture for me to use when I get ready to do my carrier deck section.
Thanks again,
Hermon

Hermon, your F4F looks really
FINE, mate, and aside from the land/sea differences that Rui made you aware of, I can see nothing else but a great looking warbird...just some
tiny fix-em-ups and she will be perfect! Thanks for the update, and like the Skip, I can't wait to see her sittin' pretty on a Flattop base!

HI Skipper, and thanks for the great advice.
I was trying to replicate the Wildcat I found on another site http://modelingmadness.com/reviews/allies/us/laskodif4f.htm
I didn't realize that the plane I was useing as reference was a land based plane so that's were all the paint chipping and wear came from. Shouldn't take me long to fix those problems. Also, if you have any reference pictures I'd be glad to use them.
Thanks for the help and I'll get to work fixing the problem areas.

Hey thanks alot for the pictures Skipper!
Man, you guys over here in the Warship forum rock! I might even build ship one day......after I finish my complete WWII airforce. :-)
Hate to bother ya'll again, but just one more question if I may. Since I'm fixing the mistakes on my plane to transition it from land to ship based, should I remove the drop tanks as well? I've noticed in every reference picture so far that carrier planes (usually) weren't equipped with drop tanks.
Thanks again for all the help and advice.

Hermon,
The usage or not of drop tanks depended on the mission

So I think you can leave them on

Hey guys,
Here is where my Wildcat is at right now. Still a little weathering to do yet and I'm waiting on the carrier deck base and figures to arrive. I'll take some better pic's for the final dio since the "blue" in these pictures turned out way brighter than it is in reality.
Thanks for looking,
Hermon

Any comments or helpful tips are appreciated. This is my first attempt at a Navy plane and I'll need some advice.
Nice looking Wildcat - one of my all time favorite planes, which held the line in the Pacific until the Hellcats and Corsairs could come into service. Well done!

Hi all!
Here is my "Judy" with some color...
Next step will be to paint the yellow markings on the wing's leading edges, apply Future and finally decal the little beast (the plane isn't that big).
Maybe I'll find time to start painting the Carrier Deck this week-end!

I thought I had posted here over the weekend. Oh well.
The planes are looking good.
As for the hornet I had emptied my bottle of thinner so I started building the island until I dug some more out.
Now it will be back to painting the flight deck.
Also Rodger if your out there or any one else working on one of the Revell Yorktown class ships. Could you tell me about where the holes for the cranes are supposed to be out side the rear hanger deck? There should be one on each side.
I think mine got filled in with putty when I leveled out the hanger deck.

Let's try this again. I posted a bit ago but we must have had a server hiccup.
I primed the Yorktown on Sunday. This was mainly for me to see where there were any problems with her, and there are some areas I need to work on. Once that is done I hope to begin painting.
Does anybody have a good suggestion on a stanard USN gray paint color for pre-war? I use only acrilics, either Model Master or Tamiya. Actually the gray primer paint I used, an automotive primer, looks pretty decent. I'm wondering which MM or Tamiya acrillic would be a good choice for the pre war USN color?

Hi Gunny!
If you ask for it...
I made the hinomarus with masks as the decals were unusable. I noticed that while trying to put the instrument decal on the instrument panel at the beginning of the build: the decal ended in pieces! Even with a coat of Liquid Decal Film I couldn't even put on the markings on the tail! Well, I guess I will have to use spare ones...
I began to paint the deck. By the way, are the wooden deck of Japanese Aircraft Carriers painted over with Ocre color or was it the natural wood wich gave that particular color!?

I hope to get my 350th Hornet completed, but I'm spending a great deal of time at the clinic and gym, rehabing my injured ankle, I need to spend a solid 12hr block to get me back into it.....

I tried posting photos of it but the gallery still is a bit quirky. From another poster here it seems that there are two holes but on the Yorktown only one of them is filled, with the crane. The other one I'll have to fill with putty. I'm not 100% sure I'm right but I used the hole that was forward and inboard, rather than the one aft and outboard. The best I can describe it the aft hole is nearly centered the two AA gun mounts, and lined up just about even with the inboard side of the square mount. The hole I used for the crane is nearly even with the aft end of the forward AA gun mount, and maybe 1/8th inch inboard from it.
If the gallery is working better in the morning I'll try posting the pics.

Rodger actually that’s the wrong set of holes I think. Your talking about the ones right behind the island right? I’m the one who told you about filling the one and you are correct for which one you added the crane to.
The ones I’m talking about are down on the hanger deck level right outside the doors for the rear hanger deck. There should be one crane on each side of the ship. The instruction just don’t show much detail there so I cant get an idea where to look.
Sorry about the confusion.

Oh, now I think I know which ones you're talking about. I wasn't sure either. I had to drill a hole for the top end of one of the cranes in order to get it to go where the instructions seemed to show it was supposed to go. From memory I seem to remember it was the port side one I had to do that on. That was so the cranes vertical post would actually be vertical.

Another update with no photos this time
just got the trumpeter 1/350 F-14 for the airwing. Initial inspection tell me that this is a nice kit. The canopy is molded in clear instead of the solid plastic as in tamiya kit.
the decals are for Black Ace Squadron for USS Nimitz. Question, if i use the marking for Enterprise, would it be totally wrong?? since there is no marking on the ac that said USS Nimitz ...and i dont know if black aces have served in the big E.

Hi Gunny,
2 x 20mm cannons (lost 3 to carpet monster), scratch FLYCO and pe fire control radar then ready to paint. The FLYCO are on plans I have for Graf Zeppelin but not in the kit so out with the plasicard.
Gunny thank you for getting me back into ships I'm loving this.
Just waiting for a new needle for my AB and then my first AB paint job. (bent the tip of the needle trying to take the AB apart). Will try and do a Baltic style paint scheme.
Will take a photo before I apply paint, (have done the hull red).
At a show this weekend with my local IPMS club so no work on it till next week
Ciao

My pleasure, mate! I'm glad that you have awakened the "old spirit of the sea" inside, Luciano! I myself am experiencing the same! When I was a youngster Naval subjects were my preference, but I kind of gravitated away over the years...but now I'm having a great time with them again too! Thanks for the updates and keep modeling!

Hi all
It's good to see that we are starting to have some more saillors aboard!
Ships (IMHO) are some of the most demanding models, if you want to go that extra mille

ence the time modelshipbuilders take to accomplish their projects - and the reason for NOT having a model of the month

Back to track: Flattops!
I have changed my model entry:
instead of USS Lexington CV-2, that will be used for Leyte Gulf Campaign, I am going to make a ACV-26 Sangamon.
It is a resin model by AKI (from Japan), already have a dedicated PE set from Flagship Models and a some spare airwing to go with it!
I am scartching myself not to touch this model until I finish my Dreadnoughts entry :-)
