Hi Steve and Rui

Wow! That's amazing! Thank you both so much for getting straight back with such helpful information.

I bought a couple of reference books for the Hellcat today, so I hope I'll be able to make a decent job of it. I'm really looking forward to this build; my first Hellcat since I was a kid, my first proper go at adding some figures and a chance to learn about USN colours and operations! What more could anyone want!

I'll be back with some pics as soon as I get going - and I'll add a thread in Aircraft to remind everyone there about Flat-Tops.

All the best

Hi there Gunny et al

I'll be submitting a 1/48 scale vignette like Jean-Luc. In my case it'll be an F6F-3 on (again) an Eduard carrier deck, plus some Verlinden USN pilots and deck-crew.

I had the Hasegawa Hellcat on the shelf as part of my obscenely large stash , but I'm waiting for the extra goodies to arrive - I'll send in some pics as I make progress.

Meanwhile, if anyone can point me towards some colour-info for the Yorktown and her CAG in August 1943, and deck personel uniform colours in general, I'd very much appreciate the help.

All the best

Rowan

Hi Merlin
The name of Yorktown's CAG in August 1943 was Jim Flatley, His airgroup included VF-5 one of the first Hellcat squadrons.
U.S. Navy Fighters of WWII by Barrett Tillman and Robert Lawson. Contains some colour pictures of VF-5 on Yorktown.

Skipper I feel for you! Work has been insane and I was sick with a stomach virus for a week. I will post pictures of my intended kit later today. I am building the Ronald Reagen in 1/720th scale .... I hope to get started next week but right now my focus is the Arizona for Dreadnaughts.

Hey guys.

I hope I'm in the right place to post this. Merlin said all of us over at the aircraft forum could join in this campaign.
I'd like to contribute an SB2U-2. This plane was flown by my Uncle in 1941 just before he joined the Flying Tigers. The plane flew off the USS Ranger with VB-4. I have already purchased the kit from Squadron and hope to get started on it before the month is up.

I'm new to the warships forum so let me ask a stupid question. Is there an easy and cheap way to make an aircraft carrier deck without having to buy one? My wife is seriously freaking out about me running up the credit cards buying model kits.

Thanks, and I hope my plane is acceptable for this campaign.

Hi David

Many thanks for the info and link! You must have read my mind; JIm Flatley's a/c is the option in the Hasegawa kit I've got. I'm hoping to model it in its later form - after the change to 3-colour camouflage - and, while I've found a few pics, I'm really keen to try to pin down the camouflage pattern - it looks like there was a lot of overpainting, including crude modification around the national insignia.

Thanks again

This will be my entry. It is the Heller 1/400th scale Clemenceau. I really like the lines on this vessel. I think its best angle is looking across the bow and down the flight deck. I do believe I will enjoy building this.

Skipper, who was it that you told me had aircraft for this puppy? I think you said it was a European company, if I am unable to obtain them here, would one of my European brothers consider me sending you the funds to procure and ship them from over there?

I hope to be building an Accurate Minitures TBM-3 Avenger on a scratch built carrier deck. I would like to include a couple of figures too.
I'm really looking forward to this

OMG

How do you guy's do it!

As you may know reading my other post this is my first ship in over 20 years and the first using PE. I've just fitted the bow railings and I'm going spare, I've done the fit don't get me wrong but at this rate I wont be finished until 2016 let alone 2006 as I now need to sit down and have a rest.

Any way respect to all you guys that use PE in 1/700 and any other "small" scale and I will keep at it, because no matter how hard I'm finding it I'm still enjoying the salty side so much so that my dry dock has just grown by a large number. read that as stash.

A short update on my Trumpeter 1:700 Kiev: I have finished the build and spent most of the time filling gaps and sanding. The stern was a pig, with "huge" gaps and some wrap. However, She has been primed and are ready for the first coats of paint. Hopefully I have some pictures for you to morrow.

Cheers

Hermon,
I would love to include your entry, Bro, but as the campaign guidelines state, you must also include either a part of or an entire Flattop into your vignette or diorama...if you can do this then, welcome aboard, mate! You can read the guidelines here:

https://armorama.kitmaker.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Campaigns&file=index&req=showcontent&id=84

And to answer your question of making a carrier deck, I have seen an article somewhere about this, but I do believe it was in a book that I had from my local Public Library...I will do some digging and see what I can come up with!

So what'll it be, matie? You in, or not!!??

Hey Gunny, would a carrier deck 10"x12" resin base like the ones sold in the Squadron catalogue be acceptable? Or would I need to add things to it such as railings and tie downs? I had planned on ordering this base for my plane.

I really look forward to seeing all the planes built for this one.

As for may ship I haven’t gotten anything new done to it. I really have to get to work on it.

A long time ago, Garry and I emailed back and forth about one of his carrier projects, I'm pretty sure it was his Yamato conversion.

Recently, I dragged my old desktop computer up from the basement so my daughter would have a machine of her own to play her games (she's 7).

While I was cleaning up the machine, removing old files, I ran into some of Garry's emails we shared.

In it, I mentioned converting a Tamiya 1/350 Iowa class hull into a CV, based on the premise that the USN had lost the battle of Midway, including the Enterprise Yorktown and Hornet, and needed interim carriers immediately.

This is only partially speculative, as the USN did preliminary studies of converting the Iowas. I've attached the drawings that are currently in the National Archives, and will form the basis of my build.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y43/jherne/Iowa-CVconversion.jpg

When I moved from NJ to WI last year, I packed up everything I had collected for this project, and recently unpacked it.

I think now is as fitting a time to start it back up again. When I left this project awhile ago, I was trying to find a name worthy of a US carrier that hasn't already been used.

EDITED by Skipper: Hi Jeff
Due to the image dimentions I have edited the [img] to [url] since it was deforming the layout
I'll try to make it visible and sizeable for posting it
Sorry, but I know you'll understand

Hello, Jeff!
I couldn't agree with you more, mate...I find this project of yours both very interesting as well as equally compelling, and would welcome such an entry into this campaign completely...and maybe naming this carrier to honor Garry might be fitting, in this case?

I wondered where my drawing went...

I'VE BEEN EDITED!!! Argh!

A large number of emails went back and forth between Garry and I about this ship. We both spent some serious time researching a timeline we could insert into the WW2 history and carrier development schedule.

The final thoughts we agreed on was to name the ship the USS Cumberland, CV-44, after the US frigate Cumberland that was sunk at the Battle of Hampton Roads by the CSS Virginia.

We had originally thought about the USS Congress, but unlike Cumberland, she surrendered to the Virginia, so in the interests of honoring a ship that fought to the death, we selected Cumberland.

We also noticed that the only ship to bear the name Cumberland was the USS Cumberland Sound, AV-17, during WW2. Close enough.

CV-44 would have been been ordered after the Midway Class CV-41-43 sometime around June 42, after the Midway loss. The Midway Class (although not named that at that point) was ordered and designed prior to this Iowa conversion, so it fits into the timeline perfectly.

CV-44 was never ordered, although the scheduled hull number was cancelled in January 1943. This also fits perfectly into the schedule, as Iowa and New Jersey were almost completed by this time.

That's my story...now I have to build her. I've decided to build her as she would have appeared in late 1944, early 1945, as a new ship. She'll carry -4 or F2G Corsairs and Martin AM-1 Maulers.

Now historically, we didn't lose Enterprise or Hornet at Midway (Hornet at Santa Cruz a few months later), and the Essex Class came along to fill the void. Japanese carrier power was blunted with the loss of the Kaga, Akagi, Hiryu and Soryu, so this design was never developed beyond these drawings...course, this is also taking into consideration that the AM-1 actually turned into a viable attack plane prior to 1948. It's a stretch, yes, but not outside the realm of possibilities when you consider the AM-1 was designed in 1943. Had it enjoyed a developmental success story like the P-51, it might have seen service before the end of the war.

Hi Jeff

Don't take it so hard
I know your intentions were good, that's why there's a "black print" of your project
I am looking forward to see your built - the story behind is highly feasable and it is a contingency plan put to light

Of course you know I'm just goofing around about the editing...but you just wait until I get one of your ship stories on my desk at Finescale!!

Seeing this thread alive and well, and with my schedule finally beginning to settle down, I think it'll be a nice distraction.
