Kenny if you have any good pictures of the Hornet especially during the battle of Midway (well you probably remember what I’m building.) in that book I would love to see them.
You can send them to qazwsxedc746 AT hotmail DOT com. Just send me a quick PM or post here so I know to check it.

Also I was able to get the paint stripped off the hull and will be trying it again here soon.
Looks like I’ll have plenty of time to work on it as well. Appears we’re getting one heck of a snow storm out here.

Hey Gunny,

Naw, I didn't sign up. Garry and I were working on this project together for some time before he passed away. In fact, it was his idea originally.

I'll sign on.

Jeff

Excellent, Jeff!
Pleasure to have you aboard, Mate...I'm curious to ask Jeff, but could this build of yours wind up in the pages of FSM? It would make for an excellent feature article either there or here at the big A (or maybe both?!? )...either way, Bro, welcome to the fleet and definitely keep us posted on your progress!

Hi guys,

Started on the Ticonderoga at the beginning of the month. Got the hull done and then the hanger deck and sides. Im still stuck filling the seams between the bottom hull and the hanger deck sides. ( Really a pain, thats basically all I've been doing on and off for the month.) So not much progress from me. Hopefully I can get past this bump and get moving.

Overall I'm really dissapointed in the Trumpeter Carrier. For a $129.99 USD I was expecting a lot better fit and certainly not as much gap filling. Alas, thats the nature of the beast.

Regards
Matt

Well I can see I'm way behind, but here goes.

I'm building the decades old Revell USS Yorktwon, CV-5. I think this kit was old when I was young. I got this one at a IPMS auction for $1 so I'm not about to sink a bunch into it for PE and such. It's going to be straight OOB.

I started construction on her last Sunday, while watching the Broncos get killed. (sigh) On thing I really like is the hull is one piece, though it's obvious it was originally two pieces. There was a pretty good seam running the length of the hull. I know I'm going to get plenty of practice using putty and filler, because it's got some really large gaps. I'd estimate I've finished maybe 30% of the actual assembly, but what is coming up is going to take a lot more time. I can tell getting the flight deck to line up properly and lay flat.

I really want some color on my display case so I'm going to make her in 1940 color scheme. There should be quite a bit of yellow on the wood colored flght deck, plus yellow, silver, and red on the planes.

I hope to work on her some more tonight, and just maybe be able to lay down the primer coat this weekend.

I'll post pics when I've at least primed her.

Hey, Rodger!
You're not behind, mate! I just cracked the seal meself last weekend on my kit...fighting tooth and nail with a four piece hull that fits like sh#%!

Good game, my friend...but, alas, I AM a Steeler fan!
Don't fret, mate! Always next year!

Be looking forward to seeing your pics, Bro...keep us posted!

Hey Rodger, by 1940, all the Navy's front line squadrons would have the light gray paint scheme. Just researched it today for someone else.

Sorry.

Here is what I was basing it on.

It's listed on this site as being 1940. Obviously that's a black and white photo but the wings on those planes at the stern look to be the same color as the aft end of the flight deck, which I'm pretty sure was yellow at that time. They also look to have the red diagonal stripes on either wing.

Works for me. I was going on color photos in the US Navy Air Combat book. Who knows. Not me.

We're both correct. The question is what is the timeline in which they changed.

Yorktown CV-5 airwing colour scheme

Actually, neither of you Rodger and Keeny are correct!
A-ha got your attention!

Now for real, you were both right!
Rodger his right because that was the scheme used in 1940
Kenny is also right, because, as the caption on the photo states, the blue grey scheme was used in 1940-41 so it's a window of opportunities

My Lex will also use the Blue Grey scheme - but first Dreadnoughts USS Arizona

Hi Steve and Roger

A picture of CV-6's deck with SB2U during filming of the 1941 film Dive Bomber.

The picture came from :

Thanks David.

I assume those were planes acutally being used by the Big E at that time, and not just paint jobs for the movie. The planes that are included in my kit actually look quite a bit like Windicators, aka Vindicators. That was the paint scheme I was going to try to do.

Hi Rodger

Yes the aircraft were from the Big E's airwing. I keep meaning to order the film Dive Bomber on DVD, as I havn't seen it yet. The plot is supposed to be rubbish, but the aircraft should make worthwhile.

Just a little update on the hornet.

I tried spraying the hull again. Now this time I didn’t flood it but the airbrush kinda died on me in the middle.
I really don’t think I’m supposed to spray this one.

Any way the little stand for the ship is coming along nicely so far.

Hi Guy's

Just an update Flightdeck is now attached and left to set. Building and painting some of the airwing, converting a Ar-234B into a Ar-234C for the awac's role.

Question, What method do you guy's use for painting the canopies of 1/700 aircraft? Colours?

Ciao

It's an old classic. I've seen it many times on TV. Errol Flynn is some hotshot doctor who has to learn to fly in order to be a flight surgeon. Ralph Belamy is his boss and together they try to figure out how to prevent the pilot from blacking out when diving. Most of the planes are models, and pretty crude, but there are lots of different types of real planes shown. It's not a bad flick.

What a delima! I just picked up Italieri's 1/720 USS Nimitz. I took a chance with it because I have their HMS Hood kit and was impressed with it. The Nimitz is a really good kit, including the aircraft (but not enough of them). So, to do the Nimitz or the WW2 Saratoga for Flattops? What to do, what to do.

Just a few pics to show how the Yorktown is coming. The hull is one piece but you add a number of vertical bulkheads around the hull and horizontal "galleries" under the overhang of the flight deck. The fit isn't too great so she's going to need a lot of putty. I dry fitted the flight deck and found there were large openings behind the AA galleries. According to Blaster this is normal.

Here are some of the openings with the first coat of putty applied.

Ahoy, me maties!
After a great, rainy, stay- inside- the-house-all-day-and play-with-models weekend, I'm pleased to announce that thanks to Mr. Tamiya's putty, and alot of sandpaper and antacids, I have finished patching, pasting, and filling the HORRIBLE seams and such on my DML USS Saipan lower hull assembly for Flattops...if I didn't have the passion that I do for this kit I would've chucked the whole thing into the deep, but persistence pays off...will be moving along now at a steady pace,(I HOPE! ) as long as no other hidden surprises pop up...How's the rest of the crew doing with their builds? (Good close-ups of your Yorktown, Rodge!)

Once again I didn’t have the time to get anything real done.

I did try hand brushing a little inside of the hull to see how it would look and it came out very poor. Any one have any advice for hand painting these big ships?

I’m still hoping to do it with the airbrush but it just keeps giving me trouble.

Soon I should have the pictures of my new bad paint job on the hull uploaded into my gallery if anyone’s interested. :-)

Hey Jake!
If your airbrush is taking fits and you can't use it, why don't you try a can of spray? I have had some fantastic finishes turn out using Tamiya's spray can's ...comparable to an airbrush finish, for sure...
