HICCUP, I was just about to start my entry for this campaign, an Aichi B7A2 Ryusei Kai (Grace), which i was going to build with the wings folded and coming up an aircraft carrier elavator. I thought i'd better do a bit of research on the wing folds and such when low and behold i find out that by the time this aircraft became operational all of Japans aircraft carriers were sunk, thus it was land based, DOHHH :-) .
Now scrambling around trying to find something else to build .

HI guys,
Thought I'd give a little update on my carrier plane entry for this campaign.
I started off with an Accurate Miniatures 1/48 Vought SB2U-1 Vindicator. This plane flew from the USS Ranger (CV-4) in March of 1940.
Unfortunatly, after many hours of hard work, fitting, glueing, sanding, unglueing, fitting, etc...etc...I am sad to announce that this project is no longer available for the campaign. I had a tragic accident at my workbench a few days ago and accidently struck my Vindicator several times with (read 20) with my fist, then proceeded to gently place it on the ground where by I again accidently kicked it several more times (read at least 3) across the basement floor. I am happy to say that this is an isolated incidence and the problem has been corrected with a trip to the LHS and the purchase of a new Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat from the USS Independence VF-22. This project is already well underway and barring any shortages of Prozak I should have her ready to fly off the deck within the proper time frame.

YOIKES! Quite an accident, Mate!
I've become frustrated at times at what I've been working on, but thankfully never to the point of boil-over! When something bad happens with a project, I just put it down and pick up another one (I'm sure you're like the rest of us modelers, with at LEAST two other builds going on at any given time!)...at least you're not giving up, mate, and you're on to something else...I just hope that you don't have another accident!
Thanks for the update!

Finally done sanding the hull of the hornet.

Here are some pictures of it.

I’ve also just masked the hull and sprayed a coat of primer over the putty. I’ll be able to start spraying paint on her ether this evening or in the morning.

Making progress, Jake!
Looking good, just keep building and posting! I myself am still limping through the PE of the superstructure of my Saipan, but we have ALOT of time to git' er dun!

No pics again, (sigh) I was too lazy to take any. I did get a fair bit done though.

I had a "DOH" moment. The last full hull ship I made I put on the shafts and screws, propellors, early in the build like the instructions said. I then promply broke them off later in the build. This time I decided I wouldn't put them on until later. All would have been well if I had put them on BEFORE attaching the island. Oh well, I managed to cradle the ship in a vice in order to assemble the shatts and screws and it came out all right.

I got all of the AA guns, both 5 inch and 1.1 guns, mounted. One of the 5" guns was broken off, and another bent, so I will have to replace those. If the replacements stand out too much from the others I may replace them all.

one question for anybody else making the old Revell Yorktwon, Enterprise, or Hornet?

Aft of the island are some holes. One is where a AAA gun is supposed to go. Aft of there are two small holes, one just aft and inboard of the other. One of the holes is supposed to be for an aircraft crane, but I can't tell what is supposed to go in the other? Does anybody know?

thanks Mark.

1'st off it looks like someone’s been watching to much Larry the cable guy. :-) Or should I say someone else has.

I’ve added the paint mask (made by Kenny “Subhunter” and painted the bottom red. This morning I painted the walls in the hanger deck. I would have done more but had to fix the computer and butcher a rabbit so that kind of finished off the morning.

I have some pictures of the ship that I’ll try uploading when I get a chance. It really looks like a clown ship right now.

Hermon don’t worry about it to much. We all have days like that.
Luckily I’ve never had anything like that happen with a model but I did once have an oak shelf flay out the garage door and then “accidently” put 2 rounds from a 16ga shotgun into it. So I understand how such a thing could happen.

Rodger sounds like you are a lot farther than I am. Just want to worn you if you haven’t already you might want to check the very front of the hull before painting. On mine there’s a dent on the one side right art the bottom. I didn’t notice it until after putting on a coat of paint.
Just wanted to give you a heads up. I don’t know if it was only on mine or not.

I’ll check and see if I can find anything about the hole and let you know

Edit: Rodger I just checked the instruction. For the Yorktown that hole should be puttied shut. On the other 2 ships part 67 fits in there instead of in the box thing.
Sorry I’m not able to name most of the parts on the ships yet.

Hi all!

Just to prove that I'm working on the Flattop's Campaign, here are pictures of my Yokusuka D4Y Diorama:

I finished Fine Mold's very nice interior of the plane and as soon as the aircraft was fitted with wings, I placed it on Eduard's Japanese Carrier Deck to have a general overview of the scene. I will use a navigator figure from the kit, a pilot from a Tamiya Zero, three deck crews also from a Tamiya Zero boxing and two additional carrier Personal figures by Hecker&Goros (lead figures).
Next stage will be the painting of the aircraft, the base and of course the figures...

Thanks for the update, Jean-Luc!
I really can't express the enjoyment that I've had thus far by managing these two of Garry's Campaigns, both Dreadnoughts! and Flattops!, and the inclusion of the wingnuts on Flattops just makes things so much better! Keep up the good work and do keep me posted on your progress, mate!

I'll have to check the instructions when I get home to find out what the nautical term for "part 67" and "box thing" are. Then I'll let you landlubbers know what these parts are.

Thanks for the info about puttying the hole Jacob. I think I might even try Skipper's idea of using two part epoxy putty and "smudging" it with my wet finger.

No problem Rodger. I’m just glad I could be of some help.

As for the progress of my hornet all of the vertical surfaces on the hull have now been painted. The hull will be completely finished after I paint on the deck blue and the color for the hanker deck floor. After that I’ll get all the making of and take pictures of the hull.

Here's few photos of where my Hornet stands. I'm planning on leaving off the majority of the cross members until the end, to allow the placement of the air wing. The interior details are scratchbuilt using the templates that WEM gives you in their hanger deck detail set.

That’s a fantastic job so far Frank.
I wish the hanger on mine was even half as detailed as that.

As for mine I decided masking would take to long so I would be better off painting the deck blue and gunship gray colors on by hand. It would be faster and easier.
Boy was I wrong.
Anyway I have to put at lest one more coat on the hanger deck floor and then do a few little touch ups and the hull will be painted. I’m thinking I can get this done tonight and ether get pictures of it up then or in the morning.

Frank, I've lost track, which Hornet are you making, the Trumpeter 1/350th?

Hi Rodger,

Yes, it's the Trumpeter, 350th Hornet. It's one of Trumpeters early 350th offerings and has some fit issues, but overall it's a nice kit.

I got the hull painted finally.
1st I will admit that the rear hanger deck could have been sanded better but I got tired of it and gave up.

Here are the pictures I promised.

This was the stage I thought it looked like a clown ship.

And here are some pictures of it right now.

Also here is the stand for it that I have completed

Now I’ll get to do some building again.

Edit: Dang I give up. You can find them in the gallery.
I’m going to bed.

Edit: I finally got them to work.

Hi Jean-Luc

Depending on which carrier deck you are planning on showing the Judy on, it could be done in a very colourful manner. Most of the late war carriers had full camouflage flight decks. Which carrier are you planning to display the Judy on?

Hi Frank!

Thanks for wanting to help me!

On Eduard's "Boxart" it is written Japan Navy Aircraft Carrier Deck Zuikaku Class and the colors are light brown for the wooden boards, grey for the elevator and there are also white stripes... I was thinking of using this color sheme. I didn't searched for a specific carrier though... you have other ideas?
I will also have to make researches for the figures. I have some without life jackets (Tamiya's injected ones) and some with (Hecker & Goros)... the pilot figure (standing) comes from a Zero fighter (suitable for the Judy?) and the navigator (with satchel) doesn't has a parachute wich I will probably sculpt myself and place at the wing root of the plane...

Jean-luc I’m not positive if its accurate or not or what point if the war it may have been used but I have seen models of the Zuikaku with a green flight deck. You could try that if you want to get away from the wood color.
I’m sure someone else here could help you out more.

Mark thanks for getting the pictures shown. I’m going to try to get them working in my above post but don’t know if I’ll have any success.

I’ll be sealing the hull today and still have a few small parts to paint and add.

After looking at the pictures a little better I should point out that the little red spots on it aren’t mistakes. Its just dried paint that fell off the mask as I was removing it. I guess I forgot to brush them off before taking the pictures.

Excellent work guys!

I really love the Judy, and as Frank (clanky44) was saying it would be very interesting to see a green camo and weathering on that deck!!! (hint hint Jean-Luc)

Frank, your Hangar deck it smashing! I am really looking forward to see it packed with the airwing!
