Ahoy, Maties!
Just a quick note to all ye salty entrants of this fine campaign out there, to help to keep things a little more "ship shape" for this campaign, please post all of your progress notes and pictures in this campaign thread, (as well as the Gallery that the Skip has created for us!) so we all can keep in contact on each others builds...by keeping all of our discussion in one thread we accomplish not only the ease of posting your progress, but also the chances of your thread getting buried in the murky waters becomes much less of a chance! By the way, how is your progress, mates? Has anyone dug into their kit's yet? I'm still waiting for some final accessories to arrive before I start mine...talk to me, gents!

Ok Gunny,
I have cut the bottom off the Graf Zeppelin to make a waterline version instead of the full hulled version that the kit makes.
Also I have added a hanger deck at the rear... sorry stern opened up the stern lift and I'm now painting the inside and aircraft for the hanger deck.
Feed back required guy's, I'm depicting the GZ as it may have appeared in a 1946 Norway invasion (If the war started in 1945).
What do you all think would be the best camo scheme?
I'm thinking along the lines of the Tirpitz Norway camo, any one have any suggestions, I'm all ears
Will post update pictures soon, I'm really enjoying this, have not built a ship for 20 odd years, I think I'm hooked again. Opps just brought the WEM 1/700 HMS Dido

Here is the photo I promised. Progress is going well just dreading the PE I've got for it, as I've never used PE this small including the 20mm AA guns

Here is an early pic of my Trumpeter 1:700 "Kiev". Nothing fancy, just OOB since this is my first ship in 20 years. So far it has been pretty good with the exception of some minor fit issues and some mold lines.

Hi, Luciano!
Thanks for the pic and the update, mate! I can relate 100% with the small size of the 1/700 PE, Bro! I'm doing the USS Saipan from DML, and I just got my PE set in the mail today from Gold Medal Models, and my eyes were bleeding just trying to see the detail of the set! :-) (Can't wait for my fumble fingers to begin this one!

)...Oh well, it's all fun to me, mate, and definitely an experience! I think that we are going to have an excellent campaign here!

Hey, Eric!
Looks good so far, Mate! That's a good kit to build to get your "sea legs" back again...keep me posted on the progress!

Hey, Mate!
Check out this site, not a bad one at all, quite a few Kreigsmarine camo schemes in the time frame that you're building to represent...

I did a little work done on my hornet yesterday.
The hulls cut free and cleaned up and all it needs now is a little sanding along the bottom.
I’m going to start by spraying the dark blue color over the hull so I glued 3 popsicle sticks to stick into foam to hold as I paint.
I don’t have a clue why I did that because it will sit upside down just fine.
Must still have some of the drugs in my system.
Any way the batteries are once again charging in my camera so I’ll a picture up soon.

Ok here are the pictures.

The parts in the bag are pieces that fell off in the box before it got here. 1 piece apparently even fell out of the box but luckily it wasn’t needed for the Hornet.
EDIT: Edited the urls for the pictures

Hi Jacob
As you can see I have edited the images url, so that they show properly

But I am posting here to say that you have a good subject to build in this Campaign
Just curious:
- How many airplanes does this model brings for the airwing?
Keep us posted,

Thanks skipper. I didn’t even realize I messed them up.
As for the planes it comes with 20 Douglas dive bombers.
I don’t know exactly what I’ll be doing with the planes yet. I’m thinking I mat try to scratch build or convert 1 or 2 of them into Japanese aircraft and have them flying over but I don’t know yet.

Hi all!
this will be my model for the "Flattop" Campaign:
Fine mold's 1/48 D4Y "Judy" and Eduard's 1/48 IJN Carrier Deck
The model looks very nice apart from the wheel bay wich is not deep enough in my opinion. I was surprised to see metal parts in that kit (with the name fine Molds it's something I should have expected!). The big black thing at the bottom right of the picture is the carrier deck. I also took away some figures from a Tamiya Zero kit to have additional figures...
Sorry to build only a small part of a ship but in 1/48 scale I wouldn't have the space to build a full one! :-)

P.S. shouldn't this thread be in the Campaign forum?

Well Hello, Jean-Luc!
I am so excited about the wingnuts that are participating in this campaign! You're entry is great, Bro, no apologies necessary...and about the thread...it's much easier to communicate and to keep track of each others progress if we leave the thread in the Warship Forum...Thanks for your participation and keep us posted on your progress mate!

Right shipmates it's time for an update. I really want to start the Kuznetsov but I'm being held up by the slow build of the Franklin.
I reckon it will be another 4 weeks to finish her, primarily because I'm trying to airbrush a 1:700 ship which requires many stages and extraordinary patience while waiting for paint to dry (I've actually started looking for simple models to build to keep me busy at the workbench while I'm waiting). All I need to do now is airbrush the last gun platforms and the lower hull then it's time to start the flight deck and finish the island.
The reason I'm using my airbrush is because WEM paints, in my experience, don't brush on at all well sometimes requiring 3 or 4 coats (with 24hrs wait in between) to create an opaque finish.
The timing isn't all that bad, the Franklin will give me good experience that I can bring to the Kuznetsov (and some pretty pictures to post) and since WEM won't have their PE set available until mid March I will have something to keep me busy and on topic until then. Right now I'm hoping that the result will be worth the effort !

I'm marching on with my Lex backdate. I have to be careful as I build what with things that are backdated and replacing PE I have to check each step against 4 other pages of instructins. Luckily the anticipaed deck problem corrected itself when I added some parts to the lower hull that stiffened the sidewalls and spread them out a bit. I anticipate having most of the upper hull above the waterline to the inclusion of the flight deck to be done by the end of this weekend (those 5 " guns are going to be a joy adding 5 or 6 pieces of PE to the mounts and all the little ship boats get rails and tiny little rudders to add on. The eral challenges come with the modifications to the island and stack. I set aside the airplanesfor a bit so I don'tget boggeddown with all that jazz (I figure three or 4 weeks on that alone)

Hi all
Currently I am having a very slow (read zero) modeling time, so I am only gattering stuff for my campaign entries and some research.
So for Flattops my entries will be:

Trumpeter's 1/700 USS Lexington CV-2, as in May 1942

Dragon's 1/700 USS Essex CV-9 in Measure 36-6-10D, Early 1944
If time allows it also an old USS Hornet, Tamiya, 1/700 and an extra package of B-25 to fill up the deck will be made... if not I will be pleased in the same way

Well my 1/400 Karel Doorman is standing-by, got to finish some other things (dreadnaughts Scharnhorst, Kübelwagen for a fellow member of Battle Tanks Nederland, VIIB for DDD2, M113 for Nam, 1/72 diorama for Berlin'45 and so on and so on lol)
3 more busy school weeks and then I should have a week of rest. Also got holiday in the last week of february so I hope to build something then as well...
The model is
not mine, just an example....

This is mine though:

Real nice kit with resin, PE, new decal set etc etc

Rui, my friend, do not feel alone!
As I too am in the same boat as you (no pun intended!

)...Life seems to be getting in the way lately and just about nullifying any modeling time that I may have...keep the faith, brother, we'll get 'er going!

Martinn:
Could you fill me in on some of the details of the Karl Doorman? Did the Dutch build this one from ground up or is it a purchase / conversion of someone else's? Looks too small to be a US Essex class. That blueish / green deck color is really cool. US carriers have been dark blue to black since the beginning of WW 2 which is why I am backdating my LEX...going with the mahogany stain that and those 4 twin 8 inch turrets

Hi there Gunny et al
I'll be submitting a 1/48 scale vignette like Jean-Luc. In my case it'll be an F6F-3 on (again) an Eduard carrier deck, plus some Verlinden USN pilots and deck-crew.
I had the Hasegawa Hellcat on the shelf as part of my obscenely large stash

, but I'm waiting for the extra goodies to arrive - I'll send in some pics as I make progress.
Meanwhile, if anyone can point me towards some colour-info for the Yorktown and her CAG in August 1943, and deck personel uniform colours in general, I'd very much appreciate the help.
All the best
Rowan

Merlin well, I am sure you know the correct color for the aircraft so I'll contribute to the deck which was stained a dark blueish color they called Norfolk stain. Most of the crew would have been in the Navy light blue shirt and medium blue color pats probably with a vest on . Check with Tom hathaway he has some marvelous sources with all the right answers

Welcome, My friend!
I can hardly contain the excitement that this campaign has generated within myself, with the cooperation of both the floaties and the wingies building together, Rowan! It should make for a very interesting campaign, I feel! (maybe you can talk a few more of your wingnut buddies into signing on too!! :-) )...Keep us posted here on your progress, Mate, lots of pics and discussion, please!!??!!

Hi Rowan
Here is a little help - this is the current colour code, but the ones with * can be related to WWII period:
Purple teams fuel planes
*Blue-teams handle the planes, deck communications and plane movements to and from hanger bays below deck.
Green teams work landing cables, perform on-deck aircraft maintenance and deal with cargo.
*Yellow teams are officers for green and blue teams.
*Red crew work armaments, crash, salvage and explosives disposal.
*Brown are pilots and air crew
*White teams are composed of safety, medical, inspectors, officers, quality control and liquid oxygen handlers.
Double cross reference with some WWII colour pictures:

PS: On the link you can see more close shots, showing different color codes to the crew, as I wrote.
Mainly and as Steve as said mainly you will have Blue and Browns
