Absolutely, Rui...and everything else!
Honestly, mate, haven't even gone past looking at the instruction sheet, my friend...but will be digging into the bugger very soon!

Well after taking a breather on finishing the Missouri for the Dreadnaughts Campaign, I finally got around to starting on my entry for DDD2. I'm doing a repeat build of an Improved 688 Los Angeles Class Fast Attack, using the Dragon "Hampton" in 1/350. I already did one as the SSN 764, USS Boise for the original DDD Campaign, and this will be the SSN 762, USS Columbus. The builds will essentially be identical, but the actual ships are as well. My son served two years on each boat, hence the choice. I was very lucky to have a first rate "technical advisor" on the initial build, and can now use THAT to make the second one and hopefully not take quite as long.
There's a fair amount of work to the Dragon kit to make it right but none of it is that hard.
The first error to correct is the placement of the hatches for the missile launchers. Dragon got MOST of them right, but two of the hatches are in a spot where there weren't any, and they left a blank spot where two actually are. So first step is to drill and file two new openings and fill in the incorrect ones. The next "error" to fix is that there are insufficient vent holes in the upper deck for the ballast tanks, so I added 4 additional pair.
Another problem is that the hull has section lines in it, which on the real boat are covered with tiles so you can't see them. The solution is to fill and sand them so I'm starting on that. One problem is that in doing so, the scribed outline of the 4 torpedo outer doors tend to get rubbed out, so I've scribed them deeply enough so that they won't disappear. And one other omisson, is the lack of the forward hatch ahead of the sail. I've now scribed that into the deck.
More updates later. (And there are still a lot of "fixes" needed to make this right.)

Aahh Skip, don't say "decompression" around submarines.

I gotta admit, my first reaction on opening up the box was, "What the heck??? Where are all the parts!!!!!"
If you count all the PE and the 40mm mount on the top, there were more bits in one of the main gun turrets on the Missouri than there are in this entire kit!

Oops. What do I know. I'm just a sign painter. :-) :-)
I got another 1/72 U-Boat for Father's Day (insipred by Miguel's U-552). When I finish my Louisiana and Sea Tiger, I'll start on it. I'm going to use a CMK interior section, too.

So far I have preshaded my U-boot and painted one side of lower hull. That's all what I managed to do in a month since in my hobby place is over 30 C degrees
and having only 0,2 mm airbrush muzzle

ahoy mates
Tonight I'm a happy man. I just came home with the new Revell 1/144 VII D minelayer U-boat.
This will be my (late) entry for DDD2, and I plan on putting pics online during the complete build.
She's an absolute beauty. The detail on the hull (in one piece like with her 1/72 sister) is incredible.
I'll post some inbox pics of her tomorrow. Due to this kit only being out two months I'm wondering if anybody has already built this one and has some advise or pointouts for any difficult points during the build?
Anyway, I was planning to put her in a waterline dio, but on opening the box and seing the detail I just don't think I'll be man enought to cut up the hull and destroy half of the beauty of this kit;..
Ooh, and does anybody know where to find 1/144 mines and 1/144 crew?
oooh I'm so excited I'll never be able to sleep tonight....

Since N scale is 1/160, I've heard people say those work fairly well. They'd be slightly smaller, so for example a 6 foot tall scale person (1.83 meters), would actually appear in the model to only be 5 feet, 5 inches tall (1.64 meters).
The Preiser PR79137 CREWMEN might work.

Hi all
After a "little" issue with our ISP that made all internet/email access impossible, I am back!
I noticed severall evolutions on the Campaign Area
but I have to ask:
SitRep on DDD2
On my own I can say that I am attacking Accurate Armour's 1/35 scale Ko-Hyoteki Japanese Midget Submarine as per December, 7th 1941 Pearl Harbour Attack
Photos as soon as possibel!
And the rest of you guys??
Please report

Where are ye' on yer builds?!
I can honestly say that I haven't gone past the first dry fitting of the parts of my entry, Trumpy's 33-G Chinese Submarine...
Just too much going on! Talk to us, tell us about yer project!!!!!

Must confess that the furthest I've got is to open the box and admire my Revell 1/72 VIIC... I plan to build her with as many of the CMK interior sets as I can afford, so had better get cracking with her I suppose! Have just got too much other stuff going on right now...

Well, mates, as of 7:00 AM EST, Saturday, 8/19/06, I've gone and done it...yes, started yet another modeling project, as well as another terrific MSW campaign!
I started on my entry for this campaign (I just couldn't stand seeing that kitbox just sitting there any longer!) which is Trumpeter Models, Chinese Type 33G Submarine!
15 minutes into the build, and I am beginning to wonder...I started with the conning tower, and the fit is not very good at all...
I'm hoping that this is just a minor flaw, and the rest of the build goes well (but if not, that's why we call it "modeling", eh?)...waiting for the putty to dry on the first three seams of the tower, as we speak, while I apply a pre-weathering coat of FUTURE on my LCVP on the opposite workbench...Updates to follow! Keep Modeling!!!

Hi all
Need an update on everybody's work on this Campaign...
I know it's a year long campaign, but don't get too loose
My own update on the Accurate armour Ko-Hyoteki is:
Ready to prime (which will be today)
Photos as soon as possible

I'll be passing an eye over the Sea Tiger today. If she's fit to prime, I'll prime her while I'm waiting for parts to dry on the Hornet. I just ordered the DML 1/350 Dallas vs Alpha kit. I want to do the USS Baton Rouge. She was the second LA class to roll of the slipway.

Skip and the gang,
Well, the Ursula was a quick kill. My next one is not quite as quick. I'm working on the Combat Subs Caproni "CB" Mini-sub in 1/72nd scale. Actually, it is a beautiful kit, just too many other things going on at present. But with the "Building Season" quickly coming up again, I'm hoping to get the shipyard back on track. Keep up the Great work ! Enjoy.........Bruce

Haven't done anything in about a month. I'm at a point that what I want to do now is take some photos before I go any further.
I'm doing an Improved Los Angeles Class from the Dragon 1/350 kit. I already did one for the original DDD, and based on input from my son who served a total of 4 years on two different I-688's there are quite a few "corrections" that need to be made to the kit to make it more accurate. So I'm planning to photograph all the stuff I'm doing as I go along so that if anyone else want's to do one of these they can benefit from what I learned. (Nothing like a former crew member to get good details!!)
Softball season is starting to wind down (tournament starts tonight) so hopefully I'll be back at it soon. (But hopefully not TOO soon!!!)

well, my VIId minelayer is ready for priming, except for the totally destroyed wintergarten railing which still needs to be fixed. I'm thinking about making a diorama with U-217 returning to port of Brest damaged after being hit by a deptcharge, bending the railing, with holes punched in the tower and ripping of pieces of the walking boards on the deck.
I'm just wondering on how far I can go with damaging her in a way which would still justify her returning to port.
It's difficult to find pics online which show battledamage to subs....

Hi Bjorn
Have you considered asking Revell GMbH for replacement parts?
It would be a "shame" to make it a waterline... don't you think?
As for damage that a U-boot could stand that would make it back to the Pens... it really depends, but some torn/bended raillings and even holes in the CT would not be the reason...unless the pressure hull is compromised. And then theres the waffle effect on the hull that is very difficult to reproduce...
Your call
As for my own update and sitrep here it is (images are better than words, right?)

And the rest of you guys?

Sorry Skip, no images yet, mate...
Actually, just started the build last weekend (see my previous post in this thread) and am encountering a bit of interesting problems of fit with practically each area that I am working on (and I say interesting in a good way...that's why it's called modeling, right?!)...after I get something worth taking a photo of I'll share my putty progress with the rest of me mates!
Keep Modeling!

Hello Skipper
Nice update on the Ko-Hyoteki (I wonder how that translates?).
Looks like a nice clean build so far. I hope you didn't run into any troubles along the way?
Did you accent the panellines on the conning tower with a pencil?
I just have a small remark concerning the “thing” just behind the conning tower. It looks like a securing or connection rod, but on the top side it doesn’t seem to be connected to anything?
As far as my minenleger is concerned , I decided to go ahead and “damage” her considerably. Better that than having to contact Revell for such a small piece which will probably cost me more to get it here than I’ll pay for a new kit.
I will firstly complete her with full hull, take pics, and put them online, after that I’ll let good ol’ Dremel have a go on her, making her waterline, and placing her in a dio.
Problem I ran into is that the deckplate (3 pieces) for the hull is so thick that I can not cut through it anymore to rip out pieces of the plating.. this way I can also not hollow them out to make the waffle-effect you mentionned earlier. I can’t put holes in these plates as a large hole in the outer skin would probably also make a hole in the pressurehull?
Now I’m looking to sand out a piece of a hullplate on the ballasttanks, and replacing it with sheetmetal and bending it slightly inward, with a few small punch holes.
Or sand down a few plates and bending the middle inward , would that look realistic? (like waffle-effect?
This is difficult, and I don’t want to overdo it, but on the other hand, the sub is so low and thin ( in comparison to the length) that it will be difficult to realisticly make her look damaged without people needing binoculars to see what damage she has…
