Here she is. The USS Baton Rouge finished. I really like the L'arsenal figures. Yes, you don't get as many as you would in PE, but they are so much better. The signal flags were made on my pc. Bonus points to anyone that can tell me what they spell.

edit: oops. the front ones are going left to right.

It's supposed to say "MSW is 1", but I fouled up the flag placement.

Hi all

First, Kenny:
Your Baton Rouge looks very good and it is a rather usual way of making a display!
The L'Arsenal figurines enhaced it a lot, as did the flags - bad mistake on the order of the flags for the "MSW is 1"
For the rest of you guys - do we have updates to show or tell?

Keep us posted,
Skipper

Well......
I am about halfway through my SECOND entry for DDD2, Skip....my first entry came under some serious un-repairable damage (I was about 95% complete too!) when my son and I were wrestling around in the shop, and OOOPPPSSS....we knocked the bugger down and both fell on it....

Hmmm

Wreting or Wrestling?
If the second is the correct one, you should know that it don't get along very well with modeling
Sorry fort that mate!

Keep up the spirit

:-)
Sorry mate, wrestling, it was. . .and yes, you are right!

But, I can hardly resist the offer to show my teenage son that his "old man" can still hold his own at some things (he can still kick my butt in Tae-Kwon-Do though!). . .Trumpeter just never expected to have the combined weight of a 6'2, 250 lb. beast and his son to come crashing down on top of them!!! :-)
Cheers!

Ahoy Gunny,

In my book nothing should go to waste.....how about a diorama with the
smashed sub.....say a sub that hit a mine?

Just a thought...

Have a nice day and happy modelling,

Ahoy, my friend!

Well Joe, I too come from the school of no waste, but honestly mate, that poor model kit looked like it was taken out with an ICBM! :-)

OHHH!

Was it a WWII sub?
A silt covered, completely corroded, marine life covered submarine diorama?

65 years of lying on the bottom does take its toll.....

Just trying to help save all those man hours of work!

I'm working on my 2nd entry as we speak. It's an older Revell full hull 1/144 XXI, but it won't be done until after new year's. I'm trying to make it better than my XXIII (I actually have a 2nd kit in storage should things go wrong ).

Hello Everyone,

I'm out of lurk mode and jumping into my first campaign. I picked up a simple model this afternoon - Dragon's 1/350th USS Hampton. I work better with a deadline, but I figured I would keep it relatively easy.

I was wondering where I can pickup a couple of the brass standoff that everyone seems to use on his or her display bases?

Oh well, I better get building. It's good to be onboard and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's continued progress. The pics posted so far are quiet impressive.

Take care,
Lou N

Lou, welcome to the site! I'm also building that kit for my entry, second time around. I did one as the "Boise" for DDD, and this time it'll be "Columbus". (My son spent two years on each so I'm doing them both.)

Don't know if you've seen any of the other posts, but there are a few things that Dragon didn't get right about that kit that make an OOB build less than accurate. Good news is that none of the fixes are really difficult from a skill standpoint, rather just take a bit of time. Obviously, everyone has different desires when it comes to "fixing" kits, and you'll find this group ready to help for those who strive for accuracy, but more than ready to accept those whose interest is simply to have fun building a kit!

I've been goofing off on this project for too long, about half through the build and haven't lifted a finger in a several weeks, but I do have photos of the corrections so far, and now that we're into the new year, I plan on finally posting them and getting the rest of the work done.

Which boat are you planning to do? Most of the "mods" are applicable to the majority of the boats, although just like every class, there are differences from one to another.

Once again, welcome aboard!

Tom

Kenny, Skipper, Tom...

Thanks for the welcome and the info on the standoffs. Tom, I haven't deciced which ship iI'm going to build just yet, but I would definitely like to hear (and see) any fixes you may have info on. I don't consider myself a rivit counter, but accuracy is important. I'm looking forward to seeing your photos.

I just finished up the basic part of my new modeling bench so I can get started on this build in earnest. If anyone is interested I'll post some pics of the bench this weekend.

Thanks again for the warm welcome.

Lou N

PS - is there a legend of all the campaing ribbons that appear under everyone's names?

If you hold your pointer over the ribbon, it will tell what it was for.

The biggest and most glaring error which just about HAS to be corrected is the incorrect placement of two of the Tomahawk tubes. They have put two of them where there aren't any, and as a result, there's an "open spot" where two should be placed. I can't say for certain, but I'm reasonably sure this incorrect placement is based off very early drawings which may have indicated this arrangement before any boats were actually built. (I've seen a drawing in an earlier edition of "Ships and Aircraft of the US Fleet") But in any event, no actual boat had the arrangement the kit does. (I'll post some photos)

Another thing that is fairly noticeable, is the shape of the sail in the plan (top) view. The kit has it pointed on both ends, but the actual sail is much more rounded in front (as well as more flat overall on the top). Another "gripe" is that having provided a sail top piece which accomodates the correct arrangement of periscopes/antennae in the Improved Los Angeles boats, the kit only provides THREE, so you'll have to scratch build one.

Many of the later boats have pods near the stern planes for the decoys (it may be that earlier boats got them installed later during drydock availability periods), and a shrouded prop. This area of the boat is very "sensitive" so having first hand information (like a son who is a former crew member) helps here. But the good news is, unless a real crewmember is looking at your build, they won't know the difference.

I do have some shots of my earlier build in my gallery, but since I'm essentially repeating that build for this campaign, I'm taking shots of everything as I go this time.
