Hello All!!!! or is that Ahoy? LOL Well Life has been busy but I'm back for now. I sold my house and all is moving forward. I have been rushing thru my builds, getting them off my desk. No shortcuts just working at a high speed. The Arizona is done just waiting to be decaled. My 1/720 Ronald Reagan is underway. Photos of both coming Friday.

As for DDD2 (how could I miss the fun again). I am building Zevezdas 1/350th K-19. I may get started this coming weekend. If I have some time I will do the DML Ohio vs Alpha once I move to an apartment for a few months.

Steve (95Bravo) I hope all is well, you have been missed.

Hey Scott, thanks!

Ah ...K-19, the Widowmaker..(It's other nickname was Hiroshima) Awesome choice! I've just been reading Rising Tide by Gary Weir and Walter Boyne, K-19 was among the Soviet subs discussed.

Hi Rui!
I've had a bit of a change in my DDD2 entry, mate...instead of DML's USS Hampton, I just got a FANTASTIC deal on Trumpeter Models
TSM5902, Chinese Type 33G Missile Submarine,
Full hull, w/ stand, 23" long. Developed from the Russian "Romeo" Class Submarine in 1985. C801 Anti-ship missiles, 8 torpedo tubes, and 20 sea mines!
Anybody have any experience's with this one to share?

Hi Mark

It's an interesting choice!
If my memory serves me well the only possible area of trouble is the area that you need to cut to make in the conning tower so that the missile "module" can be inserted - they recomend card, I would recommend plasticard

Here's a teaser and a guide

I have the book as well Steve. Haven't cracked it open. I'm a bit behind on my reading these days ..... How is it? I have plenty of Submarine books for reference for DDD3. I'm just doing the small subs for this one.

Gunny I have the same sub ... Looks like a fun build. The 2 Trumpeter sub kits I built were good kits in the end.

Hey guys. I've been working on my 1/350 USS Louisiana (what else would a gator do :-) ) and I cringe at the fact that this thing will be monocromatic (dang modern navy). Is it possible that the Ohios had the bottom part of the hull anti-fouling red and the top black (I'm actually using Tamiya's NATO black). Any help would be appreciated.

Skipper,

SITREP follows: In possession of one each Revell Lionfish in 1/178th scale, pending acquisition of one each PE set for said boat, pending acquisition of one each resin USS Icefish Conversion, pending acquisition of one each Fleet Boat wood deck; awaiting documentation from Snyder and Short regarding camouflage pattern (yes Sir, she was camo’d) and paint scheme, and pending acquisition of said Colorcoats paints! SIR!

Oh, had a truly WONDERFUL conversation with Randy! Now THAT was indeed enjoyable!!! He just may get me hooked on seagoing vessels!

Hi Mike!
Trust me mate, shipbuilding is not only contagious, but also extremely addictive! And from the plans of your DDD2 entry, my friend, sounds like you're already hooked! Welcome to the club, mate!

Hi Mike

Good planning there! My only advice would be for you to pay really good care of the flood holes / limber holes on that hull - it will make you despear, but the end result will make all the difference
Any help I can provide - just ask!

Okay, gotta get me a good book on subs. I can figure out what the flood holes are, but limber holes? Limbers were for towed cannons!! What the heck is a limber doing on a sub??!! :-) Seriously, I have no idea what those are. Gotta remember, I'm a ground-pounder wandering into the realm of waterites.

And Gunny, I am certainly hooked on this one!!!

Well, I actually did start my project last night.....

I'll probably redo/scratch-build the fins over the week end.

Oh 1/72 scale torpedo, I'm sure somewhere out there in model world there are probably photo etched parts for these, but I didn't have any, so figured I'd give a shot at making the little propellers.......

Hey Skipper...no worries. I just didn't want some one getting pics when I had found what I needed.
I did find out that the Louisiana carries no hull numbers. I wonder if this is because without the hull number, you don't know what boomer is is port and who's at sea and how many are at sea. Seems logical...but we are dealing with the government (I can say that, I work for a government agency).

Hi Kenny

Most Modern subs (boomers or not) don't have that classical 60's conning tower painted number
Usaually that have it (has the hull Project Markings) while on sea trials - once they are fully commissioned and enter the active service, those marks are removed.

Take for instance, the latest Trumpeter 1/144 scale Seawolf - those markings are NOT of an active sub!
