Skipper is exactly right. My son was on two different Fast Attack Boats, the Boise and the Columbus. I did the Boise for the original DDD campaign, and plan on doing the Columbus for the DDD2. And there won't be any really easy way to tell them apart. I had wanted to put the numbers on the sail, and my son emphatically said "NO".

(Geez.........bubbleheads!!!)

I have the book as well Steve. Haven't cracked it open. I'm a bit behind on my reading these days ..... How is it?

I've enjoyed it thus far. I did not realize they had a three mega ton nuclear torpedo (though not surprised) that was almost used on the Essex's task force during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Perhaps the most eye opening aspect of the book was how many the Soviets lost (boats and crews)either to fires or just mechanical failures.

Hi guys. I rsaw the posts regarding hull numbers on the sail. Many of the boats at Bangor have white painted aluminum hull numbers with several magnets mounted on the back that are placed on the side of the sail while in port. I don't know for sure what the fast boats in Pearl or Groton etc. do but I imagine many of them do the same thing.

Okay, gotta get me a good book on subs. I can figure out what the flood holes are, but limber holes? Limbers were for towed cannons!! What the heck is a limber doing on a sub??!! :-) Seriously, I have no idea what those are. Gotta remember, I'm a ground-pounder wandering into the realm of waterites.

Mike (++) (++)

Mike,

the limber holes are the holes that run along the hull. I built the Lionfish for the first DDD. Mind numbing work painting those puppies, but you'll be glad that you had.

Hi guys,
I've been awol for a while. I retired after nearly 28 years and I had to get a "real" job. Things are settling down so I'll pop in and add my 2 cents every now and then. Looking forward to seeing your boats!

I've heard that as well, but everytime I've been to the D&S piers over at Norfolk, I've never seen them used. I think a part of it is to make the boats anonymous.

And congratulations on you're retirement. You'll get used to being out of the service.

Eventually!!!!

No idea what flag call is but I bet it involves geting up in the dark. The Navy has a lot more PT today than when I came in.
I'm still getting up early, I just get to decide what to wear and whethor I should shave

To put it mildly.

Oddly enough, so did PT.

You know what they use to say..."we do more before 9AM than most people do all day." Which is why we became so adept in sleeping on jeep hoods.

Ok, I know

Aye, Skipper,
Now that I have my Flattops entry completed, it's time to jump back into the murky depths of the next fantastic campaign here at Model Shipwrights, in honor of our friend Garry...I just cracked open the kitbox of my edited entry, as I have changed from originally building DML's USS Hampton to Trumpeter's Chinese Type 33G, and as we speak I'm beginning to mentally assemble this interesting looking minnow...Ah yes, I love this hobby!

Just a quick update on my latest in-progress - the HMS Ursula. It is the Mirage kit of the Undine modified with the resin bow, and sheet plastic upper casing. She has a long way to go before launch, but I really enjoy the Mirage series. Hopefully she will rise up to the standards of this group - enjoy. ............Bruce

I forgot to mention yesterday the photo is in the DDD2 build progress file. I added one today showing Ursula as she is today, a slow build, but coming along. How about the rest of the crew ?

Well Skipper. The final piece of my top secret DDD2 model. As soon as I get my tutorial done, I'll be starting on it. I would tell you what the top secret project is, but the walls have ears. :-) :-) :-)

Hi mates,

I have many projects waiting, two of which are submarines. I wish to enter this campaign to motivate myself on finishing these two projects, but I will need a lot of help during the progress. Let me tell you about them.

The first one is Revell's famous 1/72 U-Boot Type VII C... I was planning to make it OOB, but I think I will be happier if I see the deck with its holes open... So I will need a pressure hull, which I wish to scratch-build. I will enter the campaign with it if I can find information about the pressure hull details.

The second project consists of a cruiser and a sub. I have Italeri's "USS Ticonderoga" and "Ohio"... I want to build them in the same diorama, either side by side or the submarine totally submerged. My problem here is that, I do not know how and why a sub be submerged right under a cruiser... I do not know if this would be nonsense, or if there is such a formation or a related tactic... I would appreciate some help with this if you guys can give me. If this can not be done because it is irrational, I will put them side by side... Then my problem turn into this: What do they do side by side :-) So, in my second project, I have a problem about formation. I wish to show the sub totally submerged, but if it can not be done with a cruiser right on top, I will put them side by side...

As soon as I am confident that at least one of my projects suit this campaign, I will enlist and will not miss the fun this time

Thanks.

Hi Cagin

I am sorry to say, but there's no chance (or a very remote one) to have the Ohio just below Tico (at least in a vaivle way of having it below - of course, subs pass bellow all kinds of vessels but more in the depths) - You can make them sail side by side on a RAS (Replenishment At Sea) or MedEvac situation (Medical Evacuation) or just docked side by side (make sure to have some guard buoyes between them)

Hope this helps

Skipper
