Thanks Kenny but the only reason the deck came out so well is due to your mask.

Redshirt the DE came out great. I think I have this pattern on my computer someplace.

Hi Kenny

Worked away on the mighty IJN Isuzu yesterday and also got some paint for its deck and lower hull.

Made some very good progress. More pictures to follow.

I am excited about this one and it has reignited my modelling passion again which I must admit wains on a far to regular basis.

Regards

Sean

Kenny there has been a change of plan

The Ariadne is proving to require a bit more work than I feel I'm capable of at the moment, so she is going to stay on the slipway and work will instead switch to the IJN Tama which will be built out of the box.
Photo's will follow shortly once I have a couple of F-14's completed for the F-14 campaign.

The Zuikakus almost done.
I’ve got most of the above deck pieces added. (Had to drill some extra holes to do so.) And have started the bridge. Should have construction done this weekend and just be left with the last bit of painting and the air wing.
However I’m not going to get her finished by the end of the moth as I had hoped. With everything thats been going on lately I forgot to order the clear glue to make the windows So I’ll have to wait until I can order that and it gets here.

Boy Luciano you work quick.

That looks like a great project.

Good to see another IJN subject for the campaign.

Thanks guys,

This is a lot easier than the Ariadne and does not require too much work. The kit even came with the upgraded IJN equipment sets so all the replacement weapons and ships boats are already in the box.

You can't tell but in the photo the hull sides are already painted

Had a productive weekend. Managed to get all the main deck railing laid finsihed up all the major sub-assembly paint work. So at this point, ships boats and planes need doingthose weird tripods on the forward and aft triple 6inch turrets a few more brass pieces and I think I'll finally be ready to start laying out the subassemblies onto the hull assembly. Of course with the redecking, putting on the superstructue and side 6 inch turrets will be a wee bit dicey . Still need to put on flagstaffs and the like and do some light rigging. All in all should have it wrapped up in a couple of weeks. Maybe in tme for the March 10th show the club is hosting. As soon as I finish, I'll colect all the photos and the document and send them to you (Gunny) so you can publish the conversion article for all to read and enjoy

Can anyone help a newbie with some research? I’ve gotten my ship built (Butler DE339)- now I am trying to find the proper camouflage measure for oct.’44 I have found none, but I have 2 for June? It appears to me that they change at least once a month.

That’s a pretty good site Gunny, direct and to the point. What I have from the naval historical center matches the two patterns they have listed should I just go with the last one listed (jun 23)?
Or is there another source that may definitively pin this down?
just let me know when I am being obsessive.

That's OK, mate, shipwrights are mainly obsessive!

I think you could be comfortable with the MS22 measure, my friend. . .have you any photo's to compare?

Ahoy Redshirt.

The Butler was wearing MS22 when she was at Leyte.

Well, finnaly I know what I am going to build!
It will be the reborn 1/700 USS Cassin DD-372 from MidshipModels - just waiting for PE to arrive and to finish my current project.
For those who don't remember, Cassin was badly damaged in the Pearl Harbour attack and after a massive rebuilt was ready for engagement again in February 1944 and served until the end of the war.

A small and interesting subject - who "win" the race against IJN Chokai (Aoshima)

I'll keep you posted on the updates

MS22 it shall be. No Gunny I don’t have any pictures of ms22 on the butler or any in its class. The written directions in camouflage page sound simple enough though (nothing wild). This stirred my interest though, when did camouflage measures start and end? How often were they changed? The navy historical listed ms31 and 32 a total of 13 times in what looks like 5 mos. of ’44 for the Butler class, but no other measures or dates.

Red, try these photos.

http://www.navsource.org/archives/06/339.htm

I hate to throw a wrench in the works, but the Butler may have been in MS32/11d for Leyte. I did some research and the Butler was at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. She escorted the survivors of Taffy 3 back to Pearl. More than likely, she whould have had any damage repaired and the painted in the latest camo measure before rejoining the fleet.

If I were a bettin' man, my money would be on MS32/11d.

I think I should reseve a decision until further evidece is found,
MS22 and MS32 are sited (w/o refference or date) in multiple sources and there are many undated photos (though likely taken when she was news worthy).
MS32/6d dated June 23 according to the US Navy Historical Center so far is in the lead being a dated signed official USN document.
I sure wish it were dated october due to the rapid rate of change.

Here's a picture of Butler (the far ship), supposedly of her at Samar:
http://www.johnjgobbell.com/color_charts_29.htm

Looks like she is still in dazzle to me. Which makes sense. She was launched in the MS32/6D:
http://www.destroyerhistory.org/de/339johncbutler_03.html

If you read about her here on the Battle of Samar website, she was pretty busy from launch until Leyte Gulf.
http://bosamar.com/usforces/de339.html

Even if the instructions on how to paint the ships changed, they would usually only repaint when they had a yard period. It doesn't look like, other than a period of "replenishment" before LG she had the opportunity to repaint.

Here you'll find art work of one of her sisters at Samar, in a dazzle scheme:
http://www.markchurms.com/john-c-butler-class-destroyers-escorts-escourts-wwii-1944-leyte-gulf-veterans-us-navy-art-prints-paintings.html
Sort of secondary evidence that she may have been still in dazzle as well.

Here she is in Ms22:
http://www.cawreckdivers.org/Wrecks/Butler.htm

I'm going to guess she didn't paint into this until after Leyte Gulf.

Its almost complete. I just have to wait till I can order and get the stuff for the windows.

So here are the almost finished pictures of the Zuikaku.

I’ve moved her from the construction area to the display shelf for now.
