The Kagero was alead ship of a19-vessel class of destroyers built for the Imperial Japanese Navy in the late-1930s under the Circle Three Supplementary Naval Expansion Program . The Mogami-class were a class of four warships built initially for the Imperial Japanese Navy as light cruisers in the early 1930s under the weight and armament restrictions of the London Naval Treaty.

Now obsolete, the air-launched and ship-launched lightweight Mk. 44 torpedo manufactured in the U.S., and under licence in Canada, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom with 10,500 being produced for U.S. service before being replaced by the Mk. 46 in the 1960's.
